Description

Since its founding in 1702 as the first capital of the French colony of Louisiana, Mobile has witnessed all manner of salacious scandals. An 1847 murder resulted in the hanging of Charles Boyington, who maintained his innocence to the very end, and a great oak tree near his grave site seems to support him. Many believe the notorious Copeland gang started one of the city's worst fires as cover to escape with stolen loot. A 1932 murder case involved a slaying at the landmark Battle House Hotel and proved that Mobile juries could not always be trusted. Local author Brendan Kirby revives Mobile's history of gangsters, gambling, theft and arson. Read more

The only thing that would have made it better would have been even more stories.

  • Wickedly Good!
Format: Paperback
I loved this book! With the detail the author offers each story springs to life, and I was caught up in the Mobile, Alabama of old. (I would also now like to visit Mobile). Stories include brass bands escorting people to the gallows, gunfire during public meetings, and the Copeland Gang. I know firsthand that the south has a rich and sometimes crazy history, and Kirby relates not just the events in Mobile's past, but also the city's historical sensibilities and character. There are also documents, artwork and drawings in Wicked Mobile that further enhance Kirby's narrative. This book made me want to fix a mint julep, sit in a porch rocker, and read it again. ... show more
