Description

A Best Book of 2021 by NPR and The Washington Post Part graphic novel, part memoir, Wake is an imaginative tour-de-force that tells the “powerful” (The New York Times Book Review) story of women-led slave revolts and chronicles scholar Rebecca Hall’s efforts to uncover the truth about these women warriors who, until now, have been left out of the historical record. Women warriors planned and led revolts on slave ships during the Middle Passage. They fought their enslavers throughout the Americas. And then they were erased from history. Wake tells the “riveting” (Angela Y. Davis) story of Dr. Rebecca Hall, a historian, granddaughter of slaves, and a woman haunted by the legacy of slavery. The accepted history of slave revolts has always told her that enslaved women took a back seat. But Rebecca decides to look deeper, and her journey takes her through old court records, slave ship captain’s logs, crumbling correspondence, and even the forensic evidence from the bones of enslaved women from the “negro burying ground” uncovered in Manhattan. She finds women warriors everywhere. Using a “remarkable blend of passion and fact, action and reflection” (NPR), Rebecca constructs the likely pasts of Adono and Alele, women rebels who fought for freedom during the Middle Passage, as well as the stories of women who led slave revolts in Colonial New York. We also follow Rebecca’s own story as the legacy of slavery shapes her life, both during her time as a successful attorney and later as a historian seeking the past that haunts her. Illustrated beautifully in black and white, Wake will take its place alongside classics of the graphic novel genre, like Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis and Art Spiegelman’s Maus. This story of a personal and national legacy is a powerful reminder that while the past is gone, we still live in its wake. Read more

  • Amazing and a must read
I really enjoyed Wake, it is a powerful book on women led slave revolts but also has useful information about how history has been recorded to paint enslavers in a good light and put the blame on Black people for our plight. Please make sure to read to the end because there is more knowledge after the acknowledgments and thank you notes. Its a wonderful book. ... show more

  • Excellent art, excellent storytelling, informative.
I taught African American history for 10 years. This book is good history. It also teaches a great deal about how history is written. I have written myself, and this book is a good story. In fact, I will now be recommending Wake as a great place to start learning Black History. I am awestruck on how well Dr. Hall connected the past to the present. You could give this book to teens who have questions about Black history, here are answers. Well done. ... show more

  • it’s also about the journey
Great book. This was a very vulnerable work. I would recommend this to those who wish to understand how absence is a form of violence and one of the many manifestation of anti blackness. The graphic novel was great to make this work accessible to youth to learn about a piece of enslavement history, especially and those who are not in an academic field. This was Hall's dissertation for those who would like an expanded view of their work, and the emotional labor it took to write this very personal and historical piece. ... show more

  • Important work
This book is important for what it reveals about the roadblocks and closed doors scholars of Black history are forced to negotiate. Actually, it is more about that than about revolts by enslaved women, on which there is very little extant information. Still, it's a powerful book that will engage younger readers especially. (My middle-aged eyes found the type very hard to read.) ... show more

  • Methodological & Ethical Notes
As a historian of Black women's higher education who uses archives extensively, I thoroughly enjoyed the history in this graphic novel that is at once an introduction to several examples of female led slave revolts and a lay introduction to archival research methodology and a critique of the archive wherever it exists as the definitive source of all things historical. Hall also critiques the unwritten positionality of white and male historians over time. I appreciate that Hall trusts herself and her historical training to construct what might have been in absence of any possible way to know. Should be read alongside the work of Saidiya Hartman, Angela Davis, Deborah Gray White, and Marisa J. Fuentes. ... show more

  • A must read, should be required in HS
A bucket of ice water in the best way. It’s abominable and criminal how the truth behind the slave trade has been swept beneath the rug in every place where white reigns supreme and disgusting that historically, men have given so little regard, respect or thought to women. A huge thank you to Rebecca Hall for bringing these truths to the world. Very well written, researched and my goodness the illustrations are so poignant and just.. wow. ... show more
