  • Wish I had this years ago
This is packed with info presented in a very clear and understandable format. This book is easily the best foundational music theory book for guitar.

  • Great stuff. Chords n scales just kinda fall in to these neat shapes..
Great system. Any age skill. Wish I would have had this system 20 years ago. Helps all those chords n scales fall together. Would have been better to go into this with no knowledge.. so kids n future rock gods... Start here.. the rest just comes to ur head. Simple study. Thanks.

  • Provides an excellent toolset!
I’m at a certain point in the beginning stages of my guitar career, where I get good tone from my cowboy chords. But how to advance, with a fuller grasp of the whole fretboard? I’m only at page 34 of this book so far, but it basically teaches you so far how to play triads all over the fretboard. It takes a lot of repetition and thought to naturally make the correct triad shapes all over the fretboard, but once you learn the music theory of what notes belong in each key-you become so much more capable as a guitarist. ... show more

  • Good for Noobs
I took music theory in college but thought I could use a refresher. First, I should say, this is an amazing book for guitarists who don't know theory. However, if you know theory, this is low level stuff applied to guitar. I found some of the info interesting even to me, however if you know a decent amt of theory, you can skip this. ... show more

  • I've purchased many guitar books. This one is special.
Most of the books I have were too inaccessible for me to find useful but this one is helping to connect the dots better than anything in my substantial guitar instruction library. You should know going in that you'll need to learn the notes on the fretboard to get the most out of this book. There's a section in the first chapter that will help with that but I'd advise using a fretboard trainer app every day as well. I'd also recommend buying the spiral bound edition if it's available, I'm glad I did. ... show more

  • Straightforward resource for moving off the plateau.
I have been interested in guitar since 1st grade (1960). I am thick as a brick when it comes to music theory comprehension, retention, and application. Visual Guitar Theory has been a great resource for getting myself unstuck from the plateau I’ve been languishing on for years. Like most things, you get what you give, however, the leap from ‘understanding’ to ‘application’ seems a little less daunting with the aid of this slim volume. No substitute for hard work, but Visual Guitar Theory, for me anyway, seems to tie together a number of things that I thought I understood abstractly, but never on a practical level. ... show more

  • Game Changer!
I highly recommend this for visual learners. It literally has been a game changer for me after years of guitar playing. It is concise and to the point. I can see it being overwhelming for someone who is new at the guitar but it can also help them speed up their learning process (in addition their other guitar lesson books/materials). Chad Johnson, if you happen to read this, I'm eternally thankful for your time and effort in making this book. Cheers! ... show more
