  • Small Price, Huge Swiss Value
Color: Green Dial, Two-tone Stainless Steel Bra...
A potentially boring story follows here, so skip to the end if you'd like not to read it, but I include a bit of perspective on watches and where Victorinox really succeeds, for those perhaps getting a bit more of a feel for watch ownership or watch collecting.... For those who just are content to wear any old watch, then any old watch will do, as long as it tells time, and there seems little point in spending a lot, or much at all. I know some people who view cars that way -- just transportation from A to B and who cares about the details or any frills. And, nothing wrong with it. Some people see clothes in a similar perspective, just totally utilitarian. But, others hold various material things in a different light, with a sense of aesthetic for the beauty, craftsmanship, and performance, longevity and quality. Yes, any watch tells time, but some do so with greater allure, accuracy and much more stylishly than others. You can spend a lot on watches, just like cars, clothes and many other things, to the point of near obscenity in some instances, but fortunately, with brands like Victorinox, you don't have to spend a fortune to get much of what a much more expensive time piece can provide. This is actually my fourth Victorinox, adding to my AirBoss Mach 6, a more military style Maverick, and one of their Night Vision models. For those seeking to upgrade their time keeping experience, it's hard to beat Swiss watches. Some very nice wrist wonders do come from many other places, of course, but there is something traditional and "old world" about Swiss horology. Much of what is out there seeks to copy or emulate what Swiss masters have created in such world renowned (and very high-priced) brands such as Ulysse Nardin, Rolex, Breguet, Breitling, Patek, etc., and, why not, it was the Swiss who invented watches, so they've been doing it for a long time. Then again, some of these elite brands can be priced well out of range for many people, with price tags in the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars, or more. But just because we can't all buy a million dollar watch doesn't mean we have to confine ourselves to the bulk bin or the rotating plastic carousel at the local department store. Great Swiss pieces can be had for less than a fortune, thanks to brands such as Victorinox. When I got into watches, many long years ago, I began with lesser brands, but, in time, learned more about why people pay more, to get more, in terms of materials and movements and refinement of build. For me, not just because of financial realities, but also out of principle somewhat, I think at some point some brands do just basically charge more than I'd ever pay, but at that limit one is not paying so much for what the watch does, as much as one is paying for the sheer exclusivity of it -- the "bragging" rights, so to speak. After all, paying more doesn't make water resistance more resistant (many mega price tag watches aren't even able to get dunked) or sapphire more "sappphire-ish" or even accuracy more accurate (many less expensive brands are, in fact, more accurate than higher end automatics). So, what are you paying for with a high priced piece? These days, brand is a big part of it, but what one hopes to get for a higher asking price is a respectable watch, with quality of movement, quality of materials, and quality of build, plus, of course, the level of style and beauty and craftsmanship that's gone into creating the piece. And, you want a company with heritage, who stands behind their product and is known for making things right the first time. On an appreciable level, one can get these same elements in watches under a thousand dollars, or not much more than fifteen hundred to two thousand dollars. Still a lot to pay for a watch? Yes, so there are even less pricey paths that still offer some degree of those aspects, for only several hundred dollars, but, generally, as the price goes further down, you are paying less, to get less, in some degree, depending on what you're looking for in your purchase. For me, I just love watches, and I've found many brands that provide for me a great "higher end" ownership experience, while still being affordable. Hamilton, Christopher Ward, Certina, Raymond Weil, Louis Erard, Mido and, definitely this brand, Victorinox -- which offers some of the MOST affordable true Swiss watches. As the years have passed, I now own a lot of watches -- too many -- of many varying brands, but certainly my various Victorinox watches are among my favorites, and I've actually wanted one of these Maverick editions for quite some time. I rarely see these priced less than around $750, so, when I saw the price on this one, having set out to find a good Swiss piece, in green (somehow managed not to get a single green watch in all of my prior purchases) given that I don't have a green watch, but have more than a few green or green accented dress shirts, and ties, I decided to indulge, and buy it. Let's talk about the watch now.... REVIEW NOTES: The trade off that I see here, for the lower price than most retail options, is that you don't get the Victorinox warranty. You get connected with Asurion, who warranties the piece, but, before wondering if that's an awful thing, let me say that part of buying a Victorinox is not needing service because these are not prone to problems. I have three others, as I mentioned already, and my brother has one as well, and they've never required any servicing. Victorinox (yes, the "Swiss Army Knife" company) are known for making very robust products -- just check out the torture tests passed by their INOX series watches -- and so it is doubtful you'll ever need Asurion's services and, if you do, they are actually very highly rated for their warranties, so it seems nothing to fear here. The result is that, for several hundred dollars less than you'd be charged elsewhere, and well half the price or less of most anything else with comparable features, you're getting an incredible watch. Swiss made, all stainless, Swiss Ronda movement, triple coated anti-reflective sapphire crystal, unidirectional 120 click coin-edged bezel, 12 hour chronograph, date window, double security clasp, and 100m water resistance. That's a LOT of watch for 500 bucks, from a genuine Swiss heritage company. Adding to this feature set is the look, mixing gloss and matte finishes, boasting a gorgeous green face with a black bezel, all accented perfectly in gold, on a two tone stainless bracelet. And if the looks don't ooze enough wow factor, the heft and quality of the build, the assuredness of the bezel movement, accuracy of time keeping, all of it just combines to be a very impressive time piece. As others have noted, it is easily as beautiful as a Rolex or any other higher priced Swiss watch. A note about the green -- in dimmer lighting it appears almost black. I've tried to capture it with varying levels of light, but it is a like a deep forest green, but catches the light beautifully, with a very emerald hue, and I think it is ideal, because it's not such a bright or loud green that it would limit what you could wear it with. Being dark, it is nearly as versatile as a black faced watch (especially because it has the black bezel) but can be worn with nearly any shade of green to compliment what you're wearing, if a green dress shirt or green accented tie or whatever. Speaking of a tie, it is absolutely dressy enough to wear with a suit or any formal gear, but can also be paired with jeans and a polo shirt or anything that is more of a dress casual nature. Size is perfect, at just about 43mm, not a dinner plate by any means, or even on the larger side, really, but not small enough to disappear if you like a watch with a bit of a statement value to it, although this one doesn't attempt such with size, obviously, but rather just with the myriad of excellent details displayed. As others have noted, it certainly catches the eye. Lume is just on the hands and on the pip of the bezel. It is not insanely bright, nor is it super long lasting, but this isn't meant to be a deep sea diving watch, and the lume certainly provides plenty of visibility to tell the time when the lights go out. I really like the gloss coating on the bezel which puts the bezel markers beneath a protective surface. It adds a layer of dimension to the bezel. This depth is also created with the tachymeter markings inside the sloped ring around the watch face, the raised gold indices on the dial itself as well as with the inset subdials. The details really do rule here, and the net effect is very pleasurable to admire. As a gift to anyone, including yourself, this watch is a stunner, and it makes me want to explore more of the Maverick line, since this iteration also comes in other color combinations, however, it is seeming to be harder to find certain versions of this, so I am not sure if it is a model line they are perhaps phasing out. If so, wise to get one while you can. Victorinox makes some fine Swiss watches, and you sacrifice nothing with their affordability. This Maverick Chronograph is a perfect example of this, proving that you can make a very reasonable investment to get a very superior time piece. I hope this review has helped, thanks for reading! ... show more

  • The watch grew on me...
Color: Black Dial
I've had this watch now for a couple of months. So far, it has exceeded my every expectation. Up close and on my wrist, it looks just like it does in the picture. To be honest, I wasn't really sure I'd like it when I bought it. The small chronograph dials on the face, coupled with the lack of Arabic numerals just seemed a little too petite and fancy for my tastes. I usually prefer my watches to look refined, yet masculine looking. Now that I've had this watch for a few months, it has grown on me. Appearance is subjective, but I like it better than I thought I would. The sapphire crystal is perfectly clear and does a great job of resisting scratches. The rest of the finishes on the watch have proved reasonably durable, too. ... show more

  • About right for $
Color: Black Dial
Just got the watch today. It's nice. Good weight. To me there is something slightly cheap about the bezel and mine is NOT unidirectional like the description claimed it would be. Plus the date is so small it's nearly impossible to read just like the tachometer print. The watch face may be a little busy for me unlike the more classic / clean submariner style. I like the brushed steel band. Overall it seems about right for the price - mid 300s. May return it, not sure. ... show more

  • Looks nothing like the marketing photos; blue is actually purple
The marketing photos of this watch look beautiful. On Amazon and Victorinox's own website, the blue version looks amazing. Reality is far different. The face color could best be described as bright violet/purple rather than the blue you see in the photos online and the bezel is *much* darker than the face. And this thing reflects light like crazy. Shiny everything. In a normal office, it's actually hard to read the face because it seems like everything on the face reflects light. ... show more
