  • Well Built Cable Cannot Overcome Limitations of the Micro-B Male Plug
Size: 6FT
I bought 2 of these Ugreen brand cables of the 6 foot length, and several others of another brand, to plug my external USB 3.0 Hard Drives into a hub. I always felt the 3 foot USB 3.0 cables included with the hard drives were too short, and limited where on my desk or counter space I could place them. This Ugreen brand cable is well made, and I can't say anything bad about it. The difficulty I had in my setup, was the weight of the plastic jacket which protects these cables, and helps to prevent electronic interference so it is quite necessary, makes it so heavy that it places unneeded weight on the thin aluminum Micro-B male plug. All 6 of the 6 foot cables including these 2 Uwell branded ones I had plugged into my hard drives, failed where the mIcro-b male plug enters the external USB 3.0 hard drives. I have both Seagate Backup Plus with Powered USB hub in 6 Tb size, and 8 Tb and 10 Tb Elements by Western Digital USB 3.0 External Backup drives. In every case where I used 6 foot cables, they failed at the Micro-B male plug, and I leave them plugged in all the time because I know unplugging and moving them puts extra stress on those USB ports and plugs. When the drives would not respond to requests from Windows 10 OS to read the drives, which go into a sort of standby state when not used for long periods, I would have to figure out what was wrong. Probably after 30 minutes or more of unplugging, then plugging the cables back in, waiting to hear the drive spin up and lights to stop flashing, I usually started to suspect the plug was the issue. I remembered I saved the smaller lightweight 3.0 cables in the boxes they shipped in, so I replaced with these whenever this happened. By replacing with the shorter cable I was able to determine that the 6 foot cables had stopped working because of the weight of the plastic jacket made them pull on the micro-B male plug day in and day out, pulling down under it's own weight, and wearing that thin aluminum plug. I really think it's a flaw in the Micro-B design also, why is it so thin? The lighter weight of the 3.0 foot cables included in the box made them more suited for longer cable life with these external drives. You might have better luck with these kind of cables in the 6 foot length using them in other devices than ones where you intend to leave the cable draped behind a desk or table, where the weight of the cable will pull on the micro-B male plug. My table has somewhere in the neighborhood of 26 USB 3.0 drives parked on it, so I have to drape them behind the desk, there isn't room for all of the cables on the desk. But I am not saying the cable is bad or poorly built. I think if I have a complaint for anyone it would be the designers of the USB 3.0 standard, who decided the Micro-B male plug would have such a thin shape. It doesn't lend itself for bearing it's own cable's weight. Otherwise I suggest you rest your cable on the surface of wherever you plug it in, so that gravity is not pulling down on the Micro-B male plug. I hope I explained the way my cables failed clearly enough so that it will help someone else find a way to prevent it happening to them. Maybe thinner cables with thinner jacket can support 6 foot length, or ones like this one can be supported somehow so that the Micro-B male plug will not bear any extra weight. Maybe a metal with a stronger alloy will be able to keep it's shape while plugged into the Male-B port of a device, as the weight of the cable pulled down it misshaped the Micro-B male plug somewhere, although there aren't visible signs of wear, it was hanging out and down slightly from the port when my hard drives stopped responding to Windows requests from File Explorer, and made occasional re-connections before the final failure if I pushed them back in and lifted up on the length of cable draped behind the desk. The unused cable length should have been supported in some way so it wasn't draped like that, pulling down on the Micro-B male plug. ... show more

  • Super Thick Cable
Size: 1.5FT
I bought this because I needed a short cable to attach my harddrive to USB but the one I had was too short. My other drive came with a cable this lenth so I thought, I'll just buy a new cable. This cable is like the hulk, it is thick and hefty and not very bendable. I guess this is good for durablility. not so good for flexiblility. It's a good price and I think as long as I don't abuse the ends, it will last a long time. I have one of those Dollar Tree slide shelving units, and I took the shelve out of the frame and doubleside taped it to the side of my computer case, and have both my drives sitting in it. The cable runs from the the hard drives mounted on the side, to the front. just a short distance. They drape down a bit but don't sit on the desk. This cord is so sturdy I will need a cord minder to hold it back when it is not plugged in ... show more
