  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Relive the Golden Age of Gaming with TurboGrafx-16 Mini
Style: Single
TurboGrafx-16 Mini is a compact console that brings the nostalgia of the 80s and 90s right into your living room. As a fan of retro gaming, I was excited to get my hands on this console and relive some of my favorite games from my childhood. The console comes preloaded with 57 classic titles, including fan favorites like Bonk's Adventure, R-Type, and Ninja Spirit. The console's interface is user-friendly, and navigating through the game library is easy. The console also comes with two controllers that feel sturdy and responsive, and the buttons have a satisfying click when pressed. The console's design is also a standout feature. It's compact and stylish, and it fits nicely into any setup. The console's graphics are sharp and crisp, and the games run smoothly. The console also has a save state feature, which allows the player to save their progress at any point in the game, making it easy to pick up where you left off. One of the best things about TurboGrafx-16 Mini is that it's a console that doesn't take itself too seriously. The console has a quirky and fun feel to it, and the games reflect that. Whether you're battling aliens in Cosmic Fantasy 2 or navigating a haunted house in Splatterhouse, the games on this console are sure to bring a smile to your face. Overall, TurboGrafx-16 Mini is a great console for retro gaming enthusiasts. The console is packed with classic titles that offer hours of fun, and the console's design and interface make it a joy to use. Whether you're reliving the glory days of gaming or discovering these classic titles for the first time, this console is a must-have for any retro gaming fan. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been great!
Style: Single
I want to start off saying I love the games and that's not part of my complaint. Growing up I didn't know anyone with a TurboGrafix 16 and hadn't even heard of PC Engine until AVGN. So a lot of these titles are ones I've only played in arcades or on inferior ports. The games included are great! But they cheaped out in a lot of baffling ways for a mini console asking for $100 and no AC adapter. I've owned all of the mini consoles, except the Playstation Mini, which didn't have hardly any games I wanted and couldn't get somewhere else. I have to say that Nintendo did great, Sega did alright and all others are pretty so-so. To date this is the first one I've not been able to play out of the box, besides the Neo-Geo, and is at the highest price point so far ($100 is so far the high price that these have capped out at). The Neo-Geo is by no means a successful benchmark to shoot for and also has a plus in that it's half the price and if you don't get the add-ons you can play it as if it were a miniature arcade machine. So this is the ONLY one you can't even turn on without an add-on, insult to injury, the AC adapter is on backorder currently. Fortunately, I had a cell phone charger that actually worked so I can play; but I'm sure there are some out there that paid $100 for a mini console they can't play and are delayed from using it indefinitely. But I feel like the better you treat your customers the better your mini console does; Nintendo sold theirs for $60 right out of the gate and had a very solid collection. Conversely, Sony was a dismal failure due to having the mind set of, "any nostalgic idiot will pay for a mini console with whatever we put on it." Nintendo knew which ones were the hits and bundled them right in, even included super rare games and even unreleased games. Sony released less popular prequels/sequels to their most popular titles; it was completely a tone-def marketing move to package Resident Evil one and Twisted Metal one when the sequels were obviously the ones you would want to play. This makes me wonder why they had both a high price-point and skimped on very easy to include features. Not bundling an AC Adapter is just unacceptable. And while I love that PC Engine games are included how much would it have costed to put subtitles on it? This mini console had gotten delayed indefinitely and then, out-of-the-blue, it started shipping and it took me by surprise. But I don't think the delays or COVID had anything to do with this oversight (if it is one) because influencers have had the mini consoles for a few months now and the ones that don't speak Japanese are unable to play certain games as they are basically RPG's. Though I've long wanted to pay Rondo of Blood so I'm just glad it's there. I just feel like they could have even put the ROM through Google Translate and it would have come out as good or better than a few of the translations of TurboGrafx games. The hardware itself is a somewhat bulky mostly hollow piece of plastic (about the size of two or three paperback books stacked up). I love the Nintendo and Sega very small compact versions of the old consoles. There is a part you need to separate to plug the cords in and I felt like I was breaking it trying to get it off. I have no idea why it didn't just plug into the back but I am guessing to give off the illusion of cords hardwired in to the console. There also isn't any power light to indicate it's on which is strange. I feel like I'd let many of these things slide if they were trying to keep costs under $50 or something but since it's actually on the high end I have to nitpick these things. But for all it's faults I've listed; it has one of the best in game menus and songs thus far! This coupled with a great library has this being one of my favorites but with many faults that are apparent. Software=excellent Hardware=obviously where they scrimped on things. I would recommend buying for a nostalgic gamer like me but just beware that this isn't the amazing value the Nintendo minis are. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Wow. It's worth it for Sapphire Alone
Style: Single
I'll be honest. I bought this to be able to play Seirei Senshi Spriggan and Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire, and absolutely it's worth the purchase price just to be able to play Sapphire. This isn't like the NES where the graphics look outdated and clunky. It's not like the SNES where the graphics are sloooooow. It's not even like the basic but snappy graphics of most genesis games. No, the Turbo Graphics is another beast entirely. The first thing I noticed was how fast and fluid the menu is for loading games. The second thing I noticed is how FAST the games are. Back in the day, the Turbo Graphics had one of the fastest 8 bit processors in the world. While SEGA and Nintendo were crowed about the benefits of 16 bit central processing and bandwidth, the Turbo went in a different direction. Instead of a slooooow 16 bit processor they paired a FAST 8 bit processor with 16 bit graphics processor. And what you get is... Playing Sapphire doesn't feel like some clunky, slow, bland old game. It feels like an arcade game. That same level of fast, fluid, colorful graphics that is common to expensive arcade machines is what you feel. The ship doesn't feel sluggish. The colors pop off the screen. It's simply amazing. Playing other games gives the same feeling. They are just so...FAST. And so incredibly colorful. I owned many of these games already on the Wii Virtual Console but the sharpness here puts it to shame. This is the way these games were meant to be seen, in crystal clear, bright, sharp, high fidelity. The console itself has a few issues (Who cares about needing a phone charger? Doesn't everyone have fifty in a desk drawer somewhere?), but one you DO get the cables and back cover seated right you likely won't have to ever worry about that again. The controller is a bit stiff but people who know say it's VERY close to the original. It has has the turbo function and a wonderful long cable (yes!). The overall experience is absolutely fantastic. I get to play games that not only were only released on the TG-16 but many that were Japan-only, hard-to-find, and now quite expensive. I love shoot-em-ups more than any other genre of game, and if you feel the same you absolutely owe it to yourself to get the best Mini Console ever made. You can get Mario Bros and Sonic anywhere, you don't need a Mini Console for that. Try getting Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire some other way. Good luck with that unless you enjoy building out Raspberry Pi solutions in your garage. ... show more
