Very nice unit for the price. Assembly instructions are not 100% accurate, but if you pay attention you should be ok. Some examples: 1. Step 1 says to insert 6 dowels into each divider, but it’s actually 9 per. The holes are predrilled and there are 3 in each spot. 2. Step 4 notes 3 dowels per piece (top & bottom), but it should be 6 per, again 3 per location. 3. Step 6: the picture does not show the cam holes in both dividers, but both dividers should be in the same direction during this step (with the long dowels towards the bottom piece). Few tips to keep in mind: 1. you are installing from the back of the unit, so do it on carpet, a rug or blanket. 2. If you can, flip the page once you start the actual assembly so the bottom will be where you are placing the unit. Then you’ll only need to flip it up and not move it far. 3. I would recommend a plastic handle screwdriver as there are a ton of screws (the back is screwed on, not nailed like most). Rubber screwdriver gives you a nice palm blister. Finally, there are not 15 adjustable shelves, but 12 (4 per section). The next to bottom shelf in the picture is fixed and the other 3 shelves are the bottom of the unit. So it is 18 shelves (6 per section), but only 12 are adjustable. ... show more

    • BIG! Nice quality-looking set of shelving

This set of shelves is mostly made of an "engineered wood product" (MDF - medium-density fiberboard), but all visible surfaces are covered with real wood veneer. In addition, most of the smaller edging and trim pieces are solid wood. The shelves have a front edge piece, also of real wood, which although it slightly decreases the height of the shelf below, increases the strength of the shelves so that they won't sag under a full load of books, even long-term. The end result is a bookshelf that looks like a real piece of furniture, or even a built-in depending upon how it's placed, and definitely not like a typical Ikea-type product. There was a bit of odor from the product, probably due to the finish still outgassing (the surfaces are real wood, remember, so they are finished with stain and some sort of finish, probably polyurethane); however, the odor was completely gone in a day or two. My only complaint is that the back shear panel, although nice enough looking from the front, is still the typical heavy cardboard with a laminated visible side. I took off one star, not because of this (there's really no other practical material in the price range, and from the front it looks and feels just fine), but because it's not recessed, so that the edges of the material are visible from the side. If they're not visible in your application, this won't be a problem at all. And did I mention big? These arrived in two boxes, both of which weighed 100+ pounds - you'll probably want to get some help loading them in. Once in the house, I was able to assemble them by myself with no problem, which took about 3 hours (taking my time). The instructions were clear enough, but many of the pieces weren't labeled. Once assembled, I could stand them up and maneuver them OK - they weigh around 250 pounds. As another reviewer noted, having a big open floor space to work in is definitely a plus, and make sure that you measure the space you're planning to put them in - they're every millimeter of the 72 inch width. All things considered, I'm very happy with the shelves. They would look right at home in a lawyer's office - they're that nice looking and feeling. Our home has quite a bit of built-in wooden cabinetry, and these stand up to that look just fine (except for that exposed back...). ... show more

The media could not be loaded. The rich color matches my home office furniture. It took two people, my husband and me, to assemble. A few hours of teamwork and the bookcase was assembled. The thick shelves make for an elegant look. Unfortunately, one shelf arrived separated so we glued it back together with E6000 glue and liquid nails repair adhesive, but it was not perfect so I can tell the difference from the other shelves. This was better than paying thousands of dollars for a custom bookcase of lesser quality and of the wrong color. I am proud of this bookcase. ... show more

The bookcase looks very nice and well built. It's a good value for under $600. I saw similar bookcases selling for over $900 elsewhere. It came in two boxes, which need 2 people to bring inside. Installation is not easy, but a lot of fun. It took me almost 5 hours to put the pieces together. People complained about the instruction manual is not clear. I found it not true. The step-by-step instruction is clear and just needs to be read carefully. The bookcase is very sturdy once installed. It is very heavy (over 200 lbs) and requires two people to move it, or you can put furniture pads at the bottom and then slide push to the position. Make sure that you secure it to the wall at the top to prevend tipping with the included hardware. Overall, I am very pleased with the bookcase and would definitely recommend it. ... show more

    • Beautiful, but terrible instructions

Instructions were a pain. Had to redo it a second time. Some of the littles nails weren’t secure and had to have the husband bradnail the bottom piece. The walnut is fairly red but still nice.

While sturdy, the bookcase is not “real” wood. It is composite with a very thin wood veneer. I had expected it to be at least furniture grade plywood for the money it cost.
