    • Pieces didn't fit together as perfectly as I was expecting for this kind of money.
The thing is very sturdy. The problem I had is that the back cover is all held together by tape. You unfold it, make it flush, and screw it in. We got it completely flush all around, screwed it down, and stood it up, per the instructions. Once we stood it up, there was a rather large gap between the plates running right down the center of the bookcase, exposing the tape. I'm hoping we can fix it with a magic marker or something, and I know that once it's full of books it won't be seen. I was just hoping to be BLOWN away with how this thing looks once it was all put up for the amount of money it costs. Right now, all I can think about is that gap of tape. ... show more

This unit came in two separate boxes. They were both in relatively good shape when received. The contents were mostly intact and ready for assembly. The only excepation is that the front wood piece had become separated on one of the shelves. The dowels and the shelf were mainly undamaged except where some of the wood fibers had been pulled away from the shelf where there was previously a glue joint. I simply re-glued the dowels and wood trim piece back into place and there is no evidence of any issues. Assembly of the unit was straight forward and I was able to complete it in about 1.5 hours. As other have mentioned there is a serious lack of labeling of the parts but if you pay attention to the drawings in the instruction booklet, its fairly easy to identify what goes where. Once assembled, the bookshelf is very solid. The trim around the front and on the front of the shelves are real/solid wood. The rest of the unit except the backer board is made of an engineered wood product or, what I would refer to as particle board, but it seems very durable and the pieces are thick so I don't expect any issues with this unit lasting. The backer, as others have noted is basically cardboard covered in a veneer; but, does its job just fine. My only minor gripe about this unit is in regard to the condition of the pieces when unpacked. The Styrofoam used to protect the content is relatively rigid and creates a lot of Styrofoam "dust" that was all over most of the parts to this unit. This created a bit of a mess when unpacking and assembling and required a thorough cleaning of the unit after it was all put together. All said and done, I am happy with this purchase and, more importantly, my book collecting wife is happy with it!! I would recommend it to others if they needed a bookcase of substantial size like this and, if not, the smaller alternatives. The loss of a star is primarily due to the lack of labeling on the parts and the Styrofoam dust all over everything both of which are inconveniences but manageable. ... show more

This bookcase is beautiful and looks just like the advertised picture, BUT...the instructions are horrific! The hardware listed and lettered does NOT correspond to the assembly. Step 1 shows insert dowels (k)...there are no "k" dowels, they are (m). Step 3 shows insert 2" dowels (r)...they are actually "t" dowels. Step 10 refers to Step 14...there is NO Step 14. One of the taped back panels did NOT meet the neighboring panel, so there was a gap right in the middle of the bookcase where the tape showed. I was able to "disguise" the noticeable tape gap with Old English Furniture Polish, but in the end, I had to accessorize with a tall element. When all is said and done, I do love the bookcase, and it looks fabulous in my new library room. ... show more

Very happy with the look. Easy enough to assemble (with 2 people and a power screwdriver). Once assembled it is very heavy and hard to move. If possible, assemble where you want it. You will need about 7 sq feet of floor space for assembly.

Overall seems sturdy and well constructed. The finish is good and the design is very nice.. Assembly instructions are very bad. Parts mostly unmarked. Quality of material is satisfactory not excellent . The description mentioned solid and engineered wood combination. It's mostly MDF with wood veneer. Will see how it's going to hold up ... show more
