  • Missed Opportunity
It's a good story, but could have been much better if the acting, scripting and directing had been given any consideration. The young girl was pleasant and did her part pretty well. The worst part of the movie was the obnoxious fat (yes, that's the correct description) kid in the red shirt. Seems like every where I went as a kid (I was a military brat) there was always a big fat bully like him confronting me. I learned early on that the bigger they are, the harder they fall. They always do. I'll give it 4 stars for the effort, and it was, for once, good, clean entertainment. ... show more

  • The Hope of Faith & Beautiful Spirituality of Nature
There is much to love about The Watchman’s Canoe. I love how Nature is its own character in this film and how it sets the tone and informs the other characters, especially the lead character Jet. It is worth seeing this film for the gorgeous cinematography alone, for it captures the beauty of the Pacific Northwest & portrays the unique way of life there on an Indian Reservation. The wonderful settings & music portray a mood of a slower & simpler time in the past while at the same time explores issues that are very current. The challenge of the characters trying to fit in brings a new light to the complexity of dealing with bullying behavior. Jet’s experience of learning to having faith in times of uncertainty & stress is a timeless & powerful message that we can all learn from. It is beautiful heart-felt movies like these that give hope for our present time & for the future. I highly recommend watching The Watchman’s Canoe! ... show more

  • Lovely
I got to know the film maker today, so I watched the movie. A really lovely film with wonderful takes of the area where I live and which I love. Barri obviously used her own experience growing up on a PacNW res, and I can assure you she does not look one bit Native American, so there is no cultural appropriation as some other reviewer accused ... the movie has such a beautiful vibe, and yes, nature here is that great. A fantastic family film ... show more

  • Looking at the details....
The canoe, far from traditional construction, was a strip plank and epoxy build. Not quite the description given of a "canoe hollowed out of a single tree". I can't say much about the characters as they were not well developed.

  • Amazing movie
Just watched this amazing movie.I am so excited to share with my family and friends. Grew up Reedsport. My grandchildren are sixth generation Oregonians, and their great, great Grandfather's family walked the Trial of Tears. Thank you sharing this beautiful story. Showing the trails, woods, lake, and Ocean that I love and know in the dark. I have never been so excited about a movie in my life. I am going to watch it again! Blessings to you all. This is a must have for your movie collection. ... show more

  • Family Friendly Lessons
Nice story, however this movie felt more like a TV production at times. Score and somewhat cheesy scenes with protagonist wandering about forests to coffee-house music. Missed opportunity to illustrate Native American legend in a more powerful way.

  • Not as good as it could have been.
Sounded like a great adventure movie but the bad acting spoiled it. With the exception of Adam Beach (Nick) and Stephanie Wallace (Onie) most of the acting was sub-par. It seemed like most of the cast was comprised of locals or friends with little acting experience. The little girl was cute and mostly believable. My first thought was how rediculous this family of white people were posing as native Americans. There was no real (believable) connection given to their presumed native past. Although I enjoyed the scenery of the temperate rain forest, the bad acting would not allow me to immerse myself in the film. ... show more

  • Heartfelt story and beautiful photography. I plan to watch again soon
Heartfelt story and beautiful photography. I plan to watch again soon. Some pieces of storyline were fragmented but over all the plot line drew me in.
