Description

One of the best books for beginning and experienced vegetable gardeners, this clear, straightforward, easy-to-read gardening bestseller (over 500,000 copies sold) uses organic, biodynamic methods to produce large amounts of vegetables in very small spaces. To accommodate today's lifestyles, a garden needs to fit easily into a very small plot, take as little time as possible to maintain, require a minimum amount of water, and still produce prolifically. That's exactly what a postage stamp garden does. Postage stamp gardens are as little as 4 by 4 feet, and, after the initial soil preparation, they require very little extra work to produce a tremendous amount of vegetables--for instance, a 5-by-5-foot bed will produce a minimum of 200 pounds of vegetables. When first published 40 years ago, the postage stamp techniques, including closely planted beds rather than rows, vines and trailing plants grown vertically to free up space, and intercropping, were groundbreaking. Revised for an all new generation of gardeners, this edition includes brand new information on the variety of heirloom vegetables available today and how to grow them the postage stamp way. Now, in an ever busier world, the postage stamp intensive gardening method continues to be invaluable for gardeners who wish to weed, water, and work a whole lot less yet produce so much more. • Great for the beginner gardener
Format: Paperback
We just started container and raised gardening. This was a great introductory tool to help us grow a good amount of veggies and fruits, as well as start our own seedlings. I would recommend this if you are interested in square foot gardening or having a higher yield of produce in a smaller amount of space (i.e. not paying too close attention to the spacing requirements written on the garden tags). ... show more

  • Novice to experienced will find anwers
Format: Paperback
Giving this one as a gift, I love mine so much. I am 20 years a backyard gardener - but what I have learned from this book tells me I was a novice! Such wonderful information; how to plant, rotate crops, what crops like each other & what does not, and how much to plant in small spaces!! Inspired idea from the author! ... show more

  • Moon Phases Pg 54, Quanties Page 7
Format: Paperback
I believe the moon phase illustrations are incorrect. On page 7, there is a chart that indicates number of plants per person. For instance, bush beans show 2-3 plants per person. Then on page 75, it says to make plantings every 2 weeks to have a supply all summer long. Are the plants per person for a single dinner or for a year? And how do you plant beans bushes every two weeks in a postage stamp garden? Do you pull the old plants out? I’m a little confused. ... show more

  • Found garden space everywhere!!
Format: Paperback
This is a great resource. I actually flipped through the whole thing, reading snippets from all different parts, the day I got it. You have to love a gardening book that helps you realize you can stash a garden bed (or two) wherever you might have a bit of space AND that is interesting enough you stay up late to finish looking through the whole thing! Go...garden...even a little! ... show more

  • This is better for a beginner
Format: Paperback
I have little gardening space, so I took a chance. If you are an experienced gardener, you already know much of what's in this book. This is better for a beginner.
