Description

From renowned cardiac surgeon Steven R. Gundry, MD, the New York Times bestselling The Plant Paradox is a revolutionary look at the hidden compounds in "healthy" foods like fruit, vegetables, and whole grains that are causing us to gain weight, trigger inflammation, and develop chronic disease. Most of us have heard of gluten―a protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we’ve been missing the root of the problem? In The Plant Paradox, renowned cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, and highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect them from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain, leaky gut syndrome, and serious health conditions. At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox, this essential healthy eating guide shares his clinically proven program with readers around the world. The simple (and daunting) fact is, lectins are everywhere. Thankfully, Dr. Gundry offers simple hacks we easily can employ to avoid them, including:Peel your veggies. Most of the lectins are contained in the skin and seeds of plants; simply peeling and de-seeding vegetables (like tomatoes and peppers) reduces their lectin content.Shop for fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize your lectin consumption.Swap your brown rice for white. Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distress―and are full of lectins. With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each, a step-by-step detox and eating plan, and delicious lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in your salad bowl―and shows you how to eat whole foods in a whole new way. • If you are sick, then it's worth the try
Format: Kindle
One can always find grounds for criticism, and that appears to be the case with this book. Critics say his citations are inaccurate, there's no evidence of peer review, marketing of supplements proves a lack of credibility, anecdotal passages indicate a flawed analysis, the understanding of lectins in the book is incomplete, etc. As a person who has suffered from psoriasis for the past 15 years, I say who cares if it works! I've tried going vegetarian, vegan, no carbs, gluten free, Chinese medicinal herbs, intermittent fasting, and just about every topical application including tar. Nothing worked or even helped in the least. Just two weeks on Dr. Gundry's diet and my psoriasis is showing improvement. I'm definitely not cured, but for the first time I actually see improvement and people notice it. Also, the diet is unfolding just as Dr. Gundry describes. After a while, I started craving the good vegetables, and my hunger is satisfied after eating a salad, and I don't get hungry again for hours. The thought of eating industrial farm raised animal protein is almost nauseating. But sometimes I go off the diet. Once day I ate pizza, and felt bloated and gained two pounds in one day. After going back on the diet both extra pounds were dropped in a couple days. Another day I ate industrial farm raised beef, and the indigestion was very unpleasant, resulting in gaining one pound overnight and my psoriasis became inflamed. Dr, Gundry does not hide the fact that his diet is the result of trial and error based upon his patients who he calls "canaries". His book is full of theories and historical observations, but it is obvious that it is all theoretical and not proven using scientific process. This makes the book interesting and helps tell a story and offers possible answers to why certain foods are bad and why certain foods are good. But the heart of the book is his lists of foods to eat and foods to avoid. Take to heart his advice to minimize animal proteins as much as possible. For me, I have never felt better than when I'm on his diet, and that is what counts. update 2/15/18 - After one month on Dr. Gundry's diet, I took my blood test. All my numbers were good. Prior to the diet, I was pre-diabetic and with high cholesterol. Also, the weight loss continues without effort. The psoriasis is still present, but the patches are slowly clearing. Do yourselves a favor and start eliminating lectins from your diet. update 3/7/18 - This diet continues to work. My psoriasis continues to clear. I can see improvement every week. My weight is still decreasing, about one pound every two weeks. There is no craving to go off diet, so it is easy to enjoy the foods that are recommended. By far the most difficulty with this diet is dealing with a social life. Eating in restaurants is always hazardous, as is dealing with friends and family who give foods as gifts. But the results don't lie, so it's all worth the effort. update 10/10/18 - My psoriasis is slowly clearing, mostly around my torso. My weight is stable around 165 pounds. The same amount I weighed in high school over thirty years ago. I stay on diet but I eat as much as I can until I'm very full, but weight never fluctuates. I'll be taking my blood test again in January and will report back. update 1/24/19 - Psoriasis continues to slowly get better. I would guess that about 20% of my plaque psoriasis has cleared up. My weight is stable at 165. I have been allowing myself to eat more farm raised meat, but I stick to what I consider the core of the diet - no grains, no night shade, no legumes, and no dairy. Here's another observation of this diet - you need to be ready to go alone on this diet. 100% of all people I've spoken with reject this diet. They cannot believe that tomatoes, cucumbers, tofu, whole wheat bread and many others are bad for you. Either that or they don't care. After a while, you just stop talking about the diet and I avoid answering questions like "why are you so thin?" Just do it for yourself and forget about what everybody says. update 2/19/19 - I should have mentioned the use of supplements to help block lectins. Dr. Gundry sell his "Lectin Shield" which you take when you can't avoid eating lectins. But you can buy supplements that are in his Lectin Shield that do the same thing for less money. So when I do go off diet, I take glucosamine, D-Mannose, okra, bladderwrack and larch arabinogalactans. These supplements help with digesting lectins so they don't get into the bloodstream. ... show more

  • Helped With Restless Leg Syndrome & Back/Hip Pain
Format: Hardcover
I've been on this diet since Jan 2, 2018. I started this diet not to lose weight, which I have, but to see how this would help the eczema, which wasn't too bad, and to see what else would happen. For almost 20 years, I've been on an organic, gluten-free, no nightshade, no dairy, no seafood diet. Over the years, my diet has gotten more restrictive. With this diet and various alternative medical therapies (currently doing Chinese Medicine), the eczema has calm down significantly and the asthma went away. My friend gave me this book (I've since bought this book for my brother) because she saw that my diet was very similar to this diet, but thought I could learn somethings. The book sat on the table for a couple of months. On day 1 of the 3-day cleansing phase, the restless leg issue stopped. My legs were seriously CALM. I've suffered from restless leg syndrome since I was a preteen. Being on a anti-inflammatory diet helped the restless leg issue, but I still suffered from it. I'm on phase 2 of the diet now and the restless leg issue has calm down about 90%. Periodically it happens. I can usually figure out what I ate that may be triggering it and then avoid that food. That has worked so far. I still can't eat many things on the phase 2 list of foods, so I'm going to continue with phase 2 until I can eat more of the foods. I'm excited to one day eat some wild caught fish! The eczema is better, but it wasn't too bad in the first place. My skin glows and feels more supple (my acupuncturist and massage therapist have commented on this). Because I was already on anti-inflammatory diet, my energy level was quite good so no significant change there. I've lost some belly weight which I really like but this wasn't too much of an issue to begin with. The significant shift in the restless leg issue was totally unexpected, although I did suspect it was food related--I'm deeply grateful for the Plant Paradox diet in that it gave me information that helped me to fine tune my diet so that the restless leg issue does not make my life miserable. Update May 14, 2018: For the last 6 weeks or so I've noticed that the back/hip pain that I've had for decades has gone away. I can get some pain/soreness after a long hike, but it goes away with a good night sleep. Before it would take days, weeks and even then the pain never really went away. I've done many things for this pain: acupuncture, massage, physical therapy, rolfing, hellerwork, feldenkrais, etc. I even had an MD x-ray it to see if there was anything out of the ordinary. He couldn't find anything wrong. I was talking to a friend the other day about how the back/hip pain has gone a way, she mentioned that maybe the Plant Paradox diet helped that also. I think she maybe right, that in addition to the additional supplements that I'm taking. Regarding the restless leg, they continue to be much calmer. It is not totally gone - I think when I eat something that my body is still not okay with, I get some inflammation in my legs and that contributes to some short term restless leg pain. I'm still not able to eat fish and nuts. If I do, the restless legs get going. I may not ever be able to eat these things, but I'll continue with this diet and pray that my body heals enough that I can. Update March 24, 2018: Legs are still very calm except the occasional occurrence. Usually I can tie it back to something I ate. I'm still on phase 2 of diet (I can't yet eat many of the things on the phase 2 list). In the beginning of the phase 2 diet I made a vegan flat bread out of cassava flour, but I found that irritated my system. Now I can eat this flat bread - Yay! I've started eating a small bite of chicken and wild caught fish here and there. I'm finding no irritation (meaning no restless leg) as a result. I'll continue this approach for a while, hopefully building up to being able to eat a meal of chicken or wild caught fish. The very small patches (only a couple of them) of ezcema I had prior to the diet have significantly reduced - they were dime sized and are now more like 1/6 the size or smaller. The patches will get a bit bigger if I eat something my body is not yet ready for. I'm still happy about this diet. It has only been about 2.5 months, and I'm hopeful that I'll be able to eat more of the things on the phase 2 list. ... show more
