  • Lipid Neighborhood
Format: Paperback
If you've ever felt overwhelmed by cholesterol numbers, ApoB, Lp(a), or the endless debate about heart disease risk, this book is a game-changer. Josh Wageman takes one of the most confusing and anxiety-inducing topics in health and turns it into something approachable, entertaining, and genuinely empowering. The genius of this book lies in its creative metaphors framing lipids and cardiovascular health as a "home security system" and "lipid neighborhood" makes complex biochemistry feel intuitive and relatable. Instead of drowning in jargon, Wageman uses a smorgasbord of clever analogies, pictures, and catchy phrases to explain how cholesterol really works, why certain particles matter more than others, and what you can actually do to reduce your risk of heart attacks, strokes, and even dementia. It's science made fun I found myself laughing out loud while learning. What stands out most is how actionable it is. This isn't just theory; it's a practical framework for understanding your own labs and making informed choices, whether you're a clinician looking for a fresh way to explain things to patients or a regular person trying to take control of your heart health. The book strikes a perfect balance: deep enough for professionals (Wageman draws from his expertise as a Clinical Lipid Specialist), yet accessible and engaging for everyone else. I finished it feeling more confident and less fearful about cardiovascular disease and that's huge. If you're tired of scary headlines and contradictory advice, pick this up. You'll learn, laugh, and walk away with tools to add real "life to your years." Highly recommend easily one of the best health books I've read in a long time! ... show more

  • ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Brilliant, Accessible Guide to Understanding Your Own Metabolism
Format: Kindle
Review of The Home Security System and the Lipid Neighborhood The Home Security System and the Lipid Neighborhood is one of those rare books that takes a topic most of us find intimidating—metabolism, cholesterol, insulin resistance—and makes it feel as familiar as your own front porch. Josh has a gift for translating complex biochemical processes into vivid, everyday analogies. What sets this book apart is how it empowers both patients and clinicians to think differently about metabolic health. Josh breaks down the tangled web of LDL, HDL, triglycerides, and insulin resistance with humor and clarity. He connects the dots between what happens in your bloodstream and what’s happening in your daily life—diet, sleep, stress, and movement—all while breaking it down to something simple as your neighborhood. This isn’t just a book for those already concerned about metabolic disease; it’s for everyone. Whether you’re a clinician wanting better metaphors for patient care or a health-conscious reader trying to make sense of your lab results, this is a must-read. By the time you finish, you’ll not only understand your “lipid neighborhood”—you’ll know how to keep it safe, balanced, and thriving. ... show more

  • The Most Powerful Health Metaphor I’ve Ever Read
Format: Paperback
The Home Security System is a powerful and creative take on health that completely reframes how we think about our bodies. Instead of focusing on symptoms, quick fixes, or complicated medical jargon, the book uses the brilliant metaphor of a home security system to explain how proper nutrition and daily habits protect us from the inside out. The idea is simple but profound: your body is your home, and food, lifestyle, and environment are either strengthening your defenses or leaving the doors and windows wide open. This approach makes complex health concepts easy to understand and even easier to apply in real life. You walk away realizing that true health isn’t about reacting to illness — it’s about building strong internal protection so problems are less likely to happen in the first place. What I appreciated most is how empowering the message is. Instead of fear, the book gives you clarity and control. It shows how everyday choices — especially around nutrition — act like alarms, locks, and surveillance for your long-term well-being. If you want a fresh, memorable way to understand how to truly protect your health, this book delivers. It changes the way you see your body — and your responsibility to take care of it. ... show more

  • Great Overview of Cardio Metabolic Disease
Format: Paperback
We had a Physicians Assistant who was in first graduating class of PAs at Yale. My husband and I were lucky to find him to help us sort out some cardio metabolic issues. We were some of his first patients. But after just over a year, he quit his medical practice. And we were so sad to lose him. We eventually found another open-minded PCP. That was 3 years ago. Fast forward to today. Our favorite PA (Josh Wageman) published a book about cardio metabolic disease for laypeople with enough scientific underpinning to be useful for physicians. It provides such a great overview of important concepts for health. And I like his sense of humor which he injects throughout the book. Just want to recommend this book for anyone looking for clear overview / conceptualization of cardio metabolic disease with details to make it actionable. ... show more

  • Josh Wageman Turns a Complex Subject Into Something Anyone Can Learn
Format: Paperback
Josh Wageman has made the complicated science of lipidology both understandable and enjoyable. His wit and humor lighten what could easily be a dense subject, and his teaching style makes the concepts clear for lay readers. I came to this book because I have atherosclerosis and needed to learn and Wageman makes the material fascinating. I’ve listened to the audiobook twice already and bought the hard copy to dive even deeper. He’s concise, effective, and surprisingly funny given the serious topic. Josh is a rising star who I will continue to watch. ... show more

  • Delightful, informative & practical Delightful, informative & practical
Format: Paperback
What a delightful find! Bought this book based on personal and professional interest in “bad“ cholesterol and liked the book’s description. But how can a science-based based book on lipids make me snort/laugh out loud AND make me cry more than a couple of times? This one did. Dr. Wageman skillfully uses helpful analogies, on point humor, and truly interesting personal antidotes to instruct both the layman and the scholar about cardiovascular disease prevention. But what he’s really doing here in the book is (effectively) adding life to people‘s years. I thoroughly and highly recommend. ... show more
