Description

Building your own homemade electric bass just got a LOT easier, thanks to the "G-Bass" kit from C. B. Gitty! This kit includes all of the parts you need to build your own short-scale (30-inch) 2-string electric bass, tuned to G-D. This tuning and setup makes it easy for NON-bassists and NON-guitarists to get started playing bass along with their favorite cigar box guitar songs... we even include a how-to-play section in the assembly guide walking you through playing along with your first couple of songs! We named this the "G-Bass" kit for three reasons: it's a play on the classic "P-Bass" released by Fender in the 1950's; it's tuned to Open G; and it's designed and made by Gitty! Featuring a solid hard maple neck and box-through brace, and a genuine mahogany fretboard/fingerboard. The box is cut from 1/4" and 1/8" Arctic Birch plywood, which has superior tonal qualities. We include two chrome bass guitar tuners, a hardwood bridge, and a custom stainless steel tailpiece of (cut here in the C. B. Gitty workshop). The fully pre-wired pickup harness features a classic-style black covered bass pickup, volume pot and standard mono jack. Includes decorative nickel-plated box corners and chrome strap buttons. The kit includes a fully fretted fretboard using the shorter 30-inch scale made popular by Fender's "Mustang" model back in the 60's. The shorter scale makes it easier to play a 2-string bass, since you don't have to move around quite as much. Overall assembled length of the instrument is 40 inches. This kit includes a full assembly guide packed with photos and detailed how-to information. You will need basic tools (drill, drill bits, clamps, sandpaper, files/rasps, etc) to assemble this kit. The body of the instrument is a laser- cut plywood box specially designed by Ben "Gitty" Baker for strength and sturdiness; this box comes in its natural "blank slate" wood state, so that you can stain, decorate and apply finishes as desired.

  • Fun project for any skill level
This was a really great kit. The instructions were easy to follow, and the materials all fit well. It was a fun project, and the bass sounds great acoustic or plugged in. I'd highly recommend it this.

  • It was a lot of fun to build / A lot of fun to play.
I was kind of on the fence about whether I could make a decent sounding instrument out of this kit. It turned out great, and sounds amazing amplified. You will have to tune it pretty frequently, but I think thats more related to the floating bridge. My only negatives: -On me: I should have stained the box pieces BEFORE gluing them. -The Kit: The screws that were included to mount the tailpiece are too small (head size) to screw in without stripping--and i was extremely careful. I upgraded to some slightly larger screws with more substantial heads. It would be nice to get an extra bridge included in the kit--I could see some builders getting in trouble. ... show more

  • Great kit can be gotten for less.
This is a great kit for my bass playing bro in law. However it is cheaper direct from manufacturer with free shipping.

  • Tons of fun
I love this kit! I'm not super handy, but I had no trouble putting it together. It was a lot of fun to make, and I love playing it. You'd be surprised the music you can make with two strings, and I think it really forces you to learn to do more with less. It's plenty loud acoustically to play by yourself, but if you're playing with anything more than other cigar box guitars you probably need to plug in. ... show more
