For a book that claims to be a 'bible' for the top 4 DAWs, this offering is seriously flawed. I have never before seen a 'Tech Bible' written at the level of "See Spot Run... Run Spot Run" for 272 pages. I didn't expect a thorough run-through of four different DAWs in a relatively slim volume, but I did expect that there might be some level of compare/contrast of functionality, ease of use, or possibly 'best use-case scenarios' to help me choose intelligently between multiple, equally admirable applications. There are online articles and videos that attempt do this, but I thought a book might be a bit more in-depth than any article could hope to be. Boy, was I surprised! This author must have believed there was a market for readers who don't know what D.A.W. stands for and are incapable of using an internet browser. Literally, page 1 starts with "What is FL Studio?" in at least 64-point font (probably to take up space), then page 2 answers the question with, "FL Studio is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)" in equally ridiculously large type. The book continues with this inane question and answer format, each on separate pages with an occasional incongruous graphic screen shot that is not explained, nor does it actually tell you anything useful. That drivel is soon followed by a page that lists the 16 "Basic Aspects" of FL Studio: Tempo, Pattern Selector, Metronomo (yes, it actually says that), Main Snap, Song/Pattern Mode, Play/Pause, Stop, Rec, Playlist, Channel Rack, Piano Roll, Browser Plugin Picker, Mixer, Master Volume, Master Pitch, Song Position. The explanations for each function are precise and detailed, such as, "PLAY/PAUSE -Put Play or Pause your project." I must say I'm relieved. That Play/Pause thing has been eluding me for decades. By way of examples, the graphics for each of the 16 'Basic Aspects' consists of a centered, half-page screen shot that is so dark and muddy that it is unusable. Additionally, 7/8ths of the page consists of pixilated PC screen, occasionally with a presumed FL Studio logo. You're supposed to be able to recognize where or what the 'Aspect' is and does based on a small strip of unreadable app menu across the top. To his/her/they/them/zirs credit, later in the book an occasional arrow is provided to narrow down the search for the unreadable on-screen information. Since (for now obvious reasons) the unnamed 'author' didn't bother to provide a "READ SAMPLE" function on the Amazon page, I won't bother to take the time to copy and paste examples either. Suffice it to say that the entire work is truly simplistic, bordering on moronic. The book seems to have been written either by a 5th grader, or someone for whom English is a second (or third language - kudos to them for that), or but its flaws are many: 1) It is obviously unedited, (the lack of basic punctuation makes it difficult to read, much less understand) 2) The page numbering begins with page "4" somewhere around page 180 (since nothing else in the book is page-numbered it's difficult to be exact), 3) There is no table of contents, index, headers, footers, or other normal navigational aids. To discover where the Ableton Live section begins it's necessary to flip through the entire book looking for a subtitle page, or the occasional mention of 'Ableton' which will help narrow down the search. One needn't have bothered though, since doing so only reveals more of the same huge typeface, muddy graphics and overly elementary explanations used to "cover everything you need to know" for all 4 software applications. Although, in the TIPS section I did find this gem... (copied verbatim) "Usually in Hip Hop The beats are syncopated and have swing/groove It is very important that you add it if you do not make the beat sound boring Add it from Clip>Groove" The information immediately preceding this didn't actually help explain why this tip was even necessary. Fascinating... IF this was the author's best effort, then I truly apologize for my obvious anger for allowing myself to be duped into buying this garbage. (Mea Culpa) The ad copy was admittedly over-the top in promising "this manual is your go-to resource for creating professional-quality music." But it was done well enough to make me NOT think the whole thing was imbecilic. However, in retrospect I have to conclude that the entire effort is nothing more than a cash grab. I would recommend you not waste your time or money, which would be better spent obtaining a free copy of your target program then grabbing a burger at your local fast-food joint and browsing through the actual program for a few hours. You'll also be able to avoid the return procedure, especially if the nearest Whole Foods Market is 30 miles away. So, in conclusion, a 'DAW Bible', this isn't. But it might make a suitable leveling shim if one leg of your computer table is about a half-inch shorter than the rest of the legs. Thank you for your attention to this matter... ... show more
