Frequently asked questions

The Thames & Kosmos Tumbling Hedgehog is suitable for kids aged 7 and up. It's designed to be an educational toy that introduces young learners to basic engineering and robotics concepts, making it perfect for this age range.

No, you do not need to buy any extra parts or tools. The Thames & Kosmos Tumbling Hedgehog comes with all the necessary components for assembly. However, you may need to have screwdrivers and batteries handy, as these are often required for assembly but not included in the kit.

The sound activation feature on the Tumbling Hedgehog allows it to respond to different sound cues, such as claps or shouts. Once it hears a sound, the Hedgehog will begin to tumble, roll, or scurry around. This feature is a great way to engage kids in learning about sound sensors and basic robotics.

While the Tumbling Hedgehog does have pre-set behaviors related to its sound activation feature, it does not support custom programming or behavior modification. The main educational value lies in the hands-on experience of building and understanding how its mechanisms work in response to sound stimuli.

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Hedgehog Rolling Robot is a complex and engineering-focused toy that requires significant assembly time, often deemed too complicated for younger children without adult help. While some have found the assembly process and the toy's functionality enjoyable and educational, others report durability issues and challenges with the toy responding to controls as expected. This toy seems to best suit older children or adults with a keen interest in engineering and assembly, offering a mixture of creativity, problem-solving, and hands-on building experience.

Pros

  • 🔧 Offers a creative and engaging STEM learning experience
  • 👪 Encourages collaboration between children and adults
  • ✨ Parts replacement and customer service are prompt and efficient
  • 🎁 Brings joy and a sense of accomplishment once assembled

Cons

  • ❗Highly complex assembly not suitable for younger children without adult assistance
  • 🛠️ Durability issues with parts breaking easily or not fitting properly
  • 🔇 Sometimes fails to respond to clap commands as expected
  • 😞 Some find the assembly process tedious and not worth the effort

Should I Buy It?

If you are looking for a challenging and engaging STEM project that offers hands-on building and problem-solving opportunities, and you have the patience for a complex assembly, this could be a rewarding purchase. However, if you are seeking a toy with immediate playability out of the box, or are purchasing for younger children hoping for an independent building experience, you might want to consider other options.

  • Customer Service is spectacular

Came missing parts so my son sent me the ones needed and the company sent them pronto. All was a relief as you cannot put it together without the parts. It is not really for younger children unless an enthusiastic adult helps. It is a bit complicated.

Not too happy! Gift for granddaughter - assembled but did not work.

  • Definitely not for kids...
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
I bought this as a Christmas gift. I was going to gift it to my son, but found something else for him so I gave it to my husband instead. It took my husband 3 hours to build it. Unless your 10 year old is a prodigy there's no way they will be able to do this by themselves. It's a fun little toy, sometimes it doesn't seem to "hear" claps very well but it does work well enough. My husband really enjoyed it. But I'm incredibly glad I did not give it to my son. ... show more

  • Assembling something doesn't mean learning robotics. Also, it BREAKS.
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
This was a last-minute purchase for Christmas and I foolishly ignored the reviews saying it was hard to assemble because I figured I would "help" my son. Please see & heed all reviews about what a PITA this is to assemble. It's not "challenging" or a learning experience. It's BUSY WORK. Yes I was able to do it. Yes the instructions are clear enough -- for a adult. Kudos to the tech writers. But will a kid learn how the mechanics actually function or be able to experiment with differing gear arrangements? No. This is, once built, done. And once it's built, parts fall out (we especially the two big metal cylinders in the head which don't snap into place) making it dangerous, and most importantly: The thing doesn't really respond to the claps as stated. If you want a robot toy that responds to noise commands, but one pre-made -- THIS IS NOT IT. If you want a project that kids can do that will teach about mechanics and offer the opportunity to use imagination and problem-solving, THIS IS NOT IT either. Honestly, find an old toy and take it apart rather than buying this. UPDATE: Even after assembly, he hedgehog falls apart. Parts don't snap into place -- they are lose and fall out. Currently, without one tiny pin, a leg is lost. A plastic strip that stretches when the hedgehog curls up has snapped. This is from one day of regular use. And It NEVER flipped over. It is assembled 100% correctly. If anyone reading reading this just thinks those of us who struggled with it are dumb or have dumb kids, check yourself please. The thing is poor quality. ... show more

  • Great product for STEM focused kids
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
I have only recently discovered this company and am super glad I did. My 8 year old loves to create things from Legos and other STEM activities. These kits will take us many hours to complete and he is not only engaged but active in the creation the entire time. We were actually missing one spring from the kit that Thames and Kosmos promptly sent us out to complete the build. There will be other kits from this company under our Christmas tree! ... show more

  • Nephew LOVED it.
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
We gave this to our Nephew in 2020, and I went over to his home this week and he brought it out and showed me all the things it can do. It has lasted over a year of playing with weekly. He let me know it was a fun gift as he was able to work with dad and build in a new way and do some coding. Great job! Great Value, and his smile was priceless. ... show more

  • Not worth the $ or (massive) effort
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
My wife bought this toy for my 7yo son. It took me (dad) several hours to assemble and I found the experience to be arduous and not much fun I have an engineering degree and love legos, so I thought I’d enjoy it. The assembly is complex, the parts are attached by plastic requiring you to used a knife to cut them free, and it takes a LONG time. There is absolutely no way a kid can put this thing together. I have the robot assembled but it’s not operating as expected. Honestly, I don’t care to troubleshoot this thing, my patience ran out a long time ago - it’s not worth the hassle, given all it does is roll into a ball. I DO NOT recommend this toy as a gift, unless it’s for some punk kid whose parents you also don’t care for. ... show more

  • Nice toy but breaks easy
Style: Hedgehog Rolling Robot
Bought as a gift for my daughter, she was so excited. After spending over an hour to build it, she finally got to play with it. Not the easiest control, you clap to make it work. After the first day the peg that holds the gear that drives the wheels broke. Now I spent a hour trying to find a way to fix it then the button that turns it on and off isn't working right. Daughter isn't happy with it anymore because it keeps breaking. If it would work without breaking it would be a great toy but as is, it is only ok. ... show more
