  • I think I prefer my city
Having played both...my city was a better experience....that said I think you only need to play one. They are more similar than I hoped

  • Another great Knizia game!
My Island is essentially a reimplementation of an earlier Knizia game, My City. Yes, there are some changes, the biggest one being this is now a game that can be played in a legacy mode, but the overall mechanics are very similar with the major difference being hexagonal tiles replacing rectangular ones in the predecessor. At its heart, My Island is a tile-laying game where you're placing little hexagons down on your island. Depending on how you place and connect various tiles, you'll score different amounts of points. At the end of the game, most points wins. Each game lasts around 30 minutes and gameplay is on the lighter side. It's no Monopoly as far as light goes, but it has a relatively simple ruleset. The legacy game mode seems to be where the fun is. I don't see the value this game brings that other games don't accomplish better in the "regular" game mode. Note that you can continue to play the regular game despite working through the legacy mode. Legacy game mode consists of eight chapters. Through these chapters, rules and components change or are altered. Changes can persist from one chapter to the next. ... show more

  • Beautiful design, well-made components
Affordable board game with well-made components, though there aren’t a lot of them to begin with (mostly tiles). The art is clean and appealing. The legacy components are designed and implemented effectively. I personally enjoy legacy games, I enjoy the story and adventure that regular board games don’t provide. Doesn’t take long to learn or play which is a plus for me because those two factors often keep games off the table. If you’re seeking a heavier and more complex legacy game, maybe check elsewhere. ... show more

  • Best of both worlds - options for Legacy and non-legacy play.
My Island is a tile placement strategy game from Kosmos. It's the follow up release to their highly regarded "My City" game. Both of which were designed by the brilliant Reiner Knizia. Prior to giving my thoughts on this one, let me just say a couple of things for the sake of transparency. I have never played "My City" and I am not a fan of legacy games. It just seems a hard sell to me that you'd spend the money that a modern board game costs for something that could only be played through one time and then must be discarded. But more on that later... In My Island each player is given a game board divided into hexagon shapes (unlike the more Tetris style shapes found in My City). On your turn you will have the opportunity to place hexagon tiles onto the board. The hex tiles are different sizes and configurations, but when placing, at least one color must match up to the color on an adjacent tile. What I really enjoy about the game is the sometimes agonizing decisions on when to place a tile versus deciding to hold out for the opportunity to place a better tile later. It reminds me quite a bit of the tension in a couple of other Knizia games with a similar dynamic (Lost Cities and Battle Line). The components are good as you'd expect from a Kosmos game, and the artwork is really nice. I enjoy the look and design quite a bit. Now in regards to that whole "legacy" thing I mentioned before. Kosmos has done something really smart in this one (and maybe My City is the same? Again, I've not played that one, so I can't speak to that). The game board is double sided, and on the back side of the board is a non-legacy version of the game. So unlike other game experiences where stickers and destroyed cards, and revealed secrets make the game un-replayable, with a flip of the board, My Island becomes a regular tile placement game that you can play over and over again. And I think that was a brilliant move on the part of the publisher. This game becomes the best of both worlds, regular and legacy at the same time. All in all I suspect this will be a well loved game for quite a while. Good design, great artwork, solid components, and with the regular versus legacy options, plenty of replayability. If this type of game interests you, I think this one is an easy "buy" for you. Well done by Kosmos. ... show more

  • If you like My City
If you already played My City I am sure you'll like this one too. It takes a different approach yet has a very similar feel to My City at the same time. Instead of polynomial pieces it uses hexagonal groups. Its less about puzzling shapes and more about matching types. It's still a fairly simple game and not overly complicated. The eternal game mode again isn't that great and probably not worth playing after you complete all the chapters. Also you can play the game twice with two-players just like in My City. I look forward to playing it a second time myself. I don't want to spoil anything, if you like or didn't like My City would be a good indication of if you would enjoy this game. ... show more

  • Beautifully designed and relatively simple to begin
There aren't too many rules to read before you can begin to play this legacy tile-placing game, so you can jump into play fairly quickly. My husband and I took turns reading through the rule sheet and then we opened the first sealed envelope and began. The basic rules are simple, and then new rules are added throughout. There are rule sheets included in the chapter envelopes (along with additional components), which can be kept on-hand throughout play. This game isn't really competitive. You do compete for points, but you aren't speeding through to finish your board first, or trying to make a better island than anyone else. More than anything, you're competing against yourself and your ability to strategize with your placement. (I say this having only completed the first chapter/three episodes, so take it with a grain of salt.) My husband was disappointed at the lack of collaboration involved, as he hoped we could team up and play together. This legacy game involves modifying the game board with stickers, drawing with ink, etc. If that bothers you, you may have to find a way around it. The theming isn't very strong, at least for now. That is, up through the first chapter there wasn't much of a story. That's ok since we're really just starting to get the hang of gameplay. We'll continue playing through and I will update my review if anything else seems relevant. For now, I recommend this game. It's accessible and enjoyable. ... show more
