  • One of the best TMNT Sewer Lair's Ever Made
This set is AMAZING. Pros: * Artwork is phenomenal * Large playset with many areas of play that seamlessly blend into each other * Beautiful for photos * Great for other 3.75"-4" toys - no obvious TMNT graffiti that ruins the aesthetic. (I'm looking at you TMNT Mayhem Sewer Lair) * Artwork blends seamlessly throughout the playset, no odd changes in texture quality of going between untextured plastic and texture/detailed artwork on cardprint. * compacts down to easily put away * It's cardboard! (more on this later) Cons: * Leonardo and Raphael don't come with their weapons. This feels...odd...like it was nearly just forgotten or a packaging mistake, because I can't imagine with all the other stuff you get two plastic swords and two sais would have made a difference. * I would have preferred some of the plastic pieces that can peg in have a more resilient means of staying in. There are two black corner pieces that keep the pop up open. These are fine and are unlikely to cause any significant wear and tear. But there are few pipes that you have to press into the thin cardboard that will eventually rip it. If you are concerned about longevity, I would leave these out most of the time so you aren't expanding the hole repeatedly I like toys. I collect toys. I have a number of playsets. Castle Grayskull, Snake Mountain, Wayne Manor, the Batcave, etc etc...I also have a number of old cardboard sets like Marvel World, the palitoys death star, etc. Cardboard is often immediately cited as being of temporary construction. And there is no doubt that cardboard is less durable than hard plastic. What is often over looked, though, is that you can often times get a much cheaper product with far better art and detailing compared to a plastic toy of the same size. Molded plastic is awesome, and can be customized to a high degree by experienced artist and hobbyist. But that level of detail is unlikely to happen in a mass produced product. So plastic playsets tend to look flat, usually with a few stickers added in key areas to break up the visual variety. Cardboard can be printed on, and so the whole playset can have a more cohesive quality to it that becomes more immersive to play in, and as a bonus at a generally cheaper price point. That said, this might be one of the best sewer playsets for the TMNT that I have ever seen. The original 1989 TMNT sewer playset is iconic and nostalgic, but it suffers from the untextured plastic look. It also doesn't have _that_ many play areas. It's great as a durable toy, but I think immersion-wise, this pop up playset beats it. There are other cardboard playsets meant more for photographers or adult hobbyist, like those from Extreme Sets, but those take up far more space, take longer to set up and take down, and are more expensive. They are great for larger 6" figures, and they have the detail, but again, I think this Pop Up playset edges them out on speed of setup/takedown, price, and frankly, playability. The plastic accessories that come with this do a great job at creating the illusion of depth that is sometimes lost in cardboard playsets. I love how the punching bag fits in with the wall, and how the pipes jut out to break up the planes of the pop up. I would be concerned if your child hasn't yet realized some things can be played with rough, and some things you have to be careful with. However, I have a 6 year old, and I think she would be fine playing with this, supervised, as I've let her play with my other cardboard playsets and they still hold up just fine. So you just have to make that assessment. If I could only buy one TMNT Sewer Lair right now from all the ones I've seen produced, this would probably be it, with the 1989 being a close second, but only due to nostalgia factors. It's just gorgeous, lots of play areas, lots of opportunities for story telling, easy to put away (playsets take up a lot of space), and it's not that expensive. I'm kind of amazed I haven't seen more talk about this in the media. This is a gem. Get it. ... show more

  • It is made of cardboard
I would have preferred it be made of plastic and not cardboard, but, for what it is I think it’s still pretty awesome. I like the aesthetic of this incarnation of turtles and love the ability of this play-set to close up for storage. It compliments and fits in nicely with our other ninja turtles toys well. Great for display! It’s easy to assemble. I don’t like that to break down and resetup requires removing and replacing the plastic accessories because I expect the cardboard will wear over time. So, the long term durability is in question. I like that it came with two figures. The head dropping gimmick on the figures is interesting. Super fun for turtle fans of all ages but I think maybe it’s not for all kids. I don’t think cardboard is ever a good little kid toy material and I know certain children that would destroy this in minutes. Worth the purchase for me but maybe not for everyone. ... show more

  • Imagination
My grandson absolutely loves it. He is not playing with any of his other toys that he got for his birthday! He has such imagination while playing with this player!

  • Great idea, bad execution
The media could not be loaded. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pop Up Playset Trunk (Amazon Exclusive, Playmates Toys) The whole point of this playset is that it should fold out quickly into a fun setup, and then fold back up just as easily. For the cardboard part only, that works fine. But the plastic pieces that attach to the cardboard? They have to be removed and disassembled every single time you want to close it up. That might sound simple, but in reality you have to push and tug on the cardboard to get those pieces in and out of the (non‑reinforced!) holes. This means you’re constantly risking damage to the cardboard. Over time, the holes get bigger and weaker until the plastic pieces won’t fit at all. A small design fix—like adding reinforced plastic rings—could have solved this, but instead it feels like they cut corners. So instead of being quick and convenient, putting it away becomes a hassle, and each use makes the cardboard worse. Honestly, I’m very disappointed. The artwork is fantastic, and the diorama details would be great… if only you didn’t have to keep attaching and removing them every time. ... show more

  • Great playset, lacks durability
This is a fun playset and I like that it includes figures. It was easy enough to put together. But the whole thing is card board with some plastic pieces. It works better as a display piece than one for play for kids. I worry it will eventually fall apart. Especially since the pieces all need to be taken off for any real portability. And the more it's taken apart and put back together the more the cardboard will break down. At $39.99 at time of review I think it's only worth it for hardcore turtles fans. The figures are pulling a lot of weight on the value of the whole set though they don't feel particularly special or unique. Overall it's a fun set even if it lacks durability. It's a great fit for young kids, turtles fans, and young at heart. ... show more
