Teenage Engineering has finally answered the question “How can I show people I’m serious about music, quirky, and better than them with cold hard cash?” This keyboard is perfect for 5% of people being impressed by your taste, and 95% wondering why you spent two thousand dollars on the Casio keyboard they had as a kid in the 90’s. In all seriousness though, I haven’t gone a day without playing this since it arrived, the battery life is great, it feels great to use, it has a wonderful design, and the tape record workflow will either keep you paralyzed with performance anxiety, or undo two decades of psychic damage from perfectly quantized music. I love the thing and would recommend anyone who has found themselves in a musical rut and in possession of 2k they desperately need to part with acquire this quirky little piece of engineering immediately.

is expensive. is amazing. everything you can do with this toy you can do it with a daw and midi controller BUT is not as fun as using this. is portable, easy and unpredictable in a good way. the fact that i refer to this as "a toy" is because i love it and using it feels like playing.

Item is fun, solid, u get creative reslly fast and the sound design, immediacy and variety of sounds make it a no brainer however Amazon s handling of defective items is complety outrageous, the onboard mic stopped working and they refused to replace the item , if you are gonna buy any teenage engineering products do it on their official website rather than here because at least with them you get a 1 year warranty unlike amazon that absolutely robs people of their money

So I was so excited about this. I’m new to music production. I found the learning curve to be easy but you hit a quick threshold of what it can do. I shifted after a week or two and downloaded a DAW Abelton and immediately was like woah this is way better. I was like ok well at least I could use the op-1 as a midi with it. Nope. It doesn’t work. I tried a zillion ways to get it to work even asked support and it’s just not compatible. So yeah my conclusion is if you don’t mind spending the money it’s a fun toy. But for actually making quality music it’s just not the device.

I’m not gonna lie, using it can be inspiring because it’s kind of like a game, it’s well constructed, and it’s extremely portable with a long battery life. But there are no features that this has that justify a $2000 price tag. Honestly, I would probably have kept it if it were $1200 or less, but even that would be too high. The workflow is cryptic, and mistakes are incredibly frustrating because there’s no clear way to get back to where you were. Backups are a chore. I’m sure some people know how to use this very well, but I’ll stick with my Elektron boxes, thank you.
