  • I'm glad I bought this. Made summer vacation much more fun.
Format: Paperback
We bought this for the kids for summer vacation. They learn 1 or 2 new games a week and have enjoyed playing the games for hours. I like how it's divided in sections by how many people can play and also ranked by difficulty. Now we all have our new family favorites.

  • Clear instructions; Aimed at parents
Format: Paperback
I have mixed feelings about this book. As a parent, it has some good suggestions for family game nights and playing games with kids including what skills some games will help develop. I bought it for a single young adult, however, who has no kids. But it has a really decent amount of games, which were well explained/illustrated (which is what really matters in a card game book) and the price was great, so I did not return it but gave it to them anyway. I also bought a copy for myself. Edit: as I’ve played through more of the games, I find myself wanting a more “adult” book for myself, as I find that some games I want to play have been simplified too much, and sometimes without the author noting that the instructions have been changed from what is traditional. This book was great for learning Hearts, but the simplified instructions for Euchre make it almost a different game, because she doesn’t explain the ranking system of Euchre, in which the Jack of the trip suit and the Jack of the other suit of that color are the high trumps, leaving the reader to conclude that the ranking sun is the standard aces high of most other trick-taking games. Then there’s Spades, which claims a player count of 2-5. Spades is usually played in partnership, but I figured playing as individuals would still help us get the hang of bidding. Spades for two using the instructions in the book was just a disaster. Three or five might work, though. ... show more

I was looking for a variety of games that both my husband and kids could play. This book covered it all. It's easy to use and contains a variety of ages and skill levels.

  • Not bad, just not great
Format: Paperback
we have a lot of board games in our house but my daughter just discovered that there were more games than poker and blackjack. We play go fish but couldn't remember the rules to any of the other games for when we were kids. I really like that this book is broken up into games for 2 or more players and games for one. It is also divided into easy, medium, and hard. There were several games that we recognize and a whole bunch of them I had never heard of before. We have played two new games out of the book so far. I appreciate that many of the game instructions have pictures to show you how the cards should be laid out. Unfortunately they do not all have pictures and we have had to guess at some of the rules and interpretations. For example, the game steal the pile, it does not really clarify how gameplay goes or how we set up our cards in front of us. I think we have managed to make it up well enough to work for us. My 7 year old daughter did enjoy interpreting the rules and tried to figure out what she thought it was trying to say. I would recommend this book, just don't expect it to be great or clear. ... show more
