I experimented with several cheaper HDMI or DP to VGA adapters for running my CRT monitor with newer graphics cards that don't have native VGA out and this is the only one I tried that can actually do high bandwidth. I get a picture just as good to my eyes as from my GTX 680 at 1920x1440@60, 1600x1200@75, 1200x900@100, etc. It also handles weird resolutions like 512x480@60 (for SNES emulation) just fine. Switching resolutions is fast with no artifacting or other issues I can tell. I have heard from others that it's not quite good enough to max out the absolute best CRTs, but for my 96kHz monitor this is the perfect adapter to buy. While it is a little pricey compared to some of the options out there, it's still very affordable compared to the truly specialty offerings and works great. I find it a slight shame that I've had to go with a DisplayPort adapter as that means it's not compatible with game consoles, etc however StarTech's HD2VGAE2 is a good offering for that. ... show more

    • For CRT buffs out there, this is the adapter you want
I'm using this adapter to drive a ViewSonic A90 CRT Monitor, and it works fantastic. I bought this Startech adapter specifically because I heard it has one of the better chipsets that adapters of this kind come with. I can vouch for that, it was able to handle any resolution and refresh rate I set it to. From 1600x1200@70Hz to 320x240@175Hz, it was able to drive every configuration I set it to. The only thing I was unable to test is interlaced output, since Nvidia removed the capability to output interlaced signals in their newer GPUs. But everything else was awesome, definitely worth every penny. If you are looking to drive a CRT monitor with a modern PC, this is the adapter you want. Doesn't get the refresh I was hoping for at 1600x1200 for whatever reason. Only 75 whereas my other one that just has a VGA output can get 100. My crt can do 110.

    • Decent for VGA CRT Usage
I purchased this adapter on October 2023 for use with an NEC MultiSync FE950 CRT. Maximum refresh rate I get from the adapter is 85 Hz, and this works at 1280x1024 and down. I can even do 1600x1200 @ 75 Hz (and ‘list display modes’ dialog claims it can go to even higher resolutions, though I cannot test) Note: to be clear, this adapter cannot go past 85 Hz at any resolution despite my monitor supporting much higher refresh rates at lower resolutions such as 640x480 @ 160 Hz, This is not an issue for me, as I’m going to run this at 1280x1024 anyways, and 85 Hz is the max my monitor supports at that resolution. However if you’re looking to use this retro game on a modern PC, and run things at lower resolutions, you’ll be leaving some refresh rate on the table that you could achieve on an old 90s machine.     • Good for high resolution/framerate CRT gaming
It was able to drive my CRT at 1600x1200@85Hz, but also deletes scan lines for some reason on lower resolutions. I get scan lines at 640x480 with a native VGA signal and a few other DP to VGA adapters I have, but those adapters top out at 1600x1200@60. This one goes above that, but for some reason it deletes the scan lines at 640x480. While it preformed well, I'm trying to get an authentic experience for those games, so I'll need to see if I can find another adapter that can do both 1600x1200@85 and 640x480 w/o deleting the scan lines. Only other annoyance is it doesn't forward the monitor's supported resolutions to the graphics cards, so you need to manually setup your resolutions. The monitor is capable of it, but for some reason every adapter I use just completely ignores the monitor and throws some random resolutions/refresh rates at windows instead of the correct ones. ... show more

I bought this device based on the reviews stating that high resolutions such as 1600x1200 @ 85Hz were supported, but unfortunately this is no longer the case. I contacted Startech support when I was having issues and the stated response was "This adapters VGA port supports 1920x1080 at 60Hz which is 3.73 Gbps bandwidth, running 1600x1200 85Hz requires 4.90 bandwidth. therefore this adapter will not able to get to that 85Hz at the 1600x1200." and when I asked about the previous reviews stating otherwise, I was told "there was some changes to this adapter in the March of this year." The fact that the model number was unchanged seemed kind of shady to me and I further pressed and was told "Yes, there is some internal changes but we never market it with that support of resolution, we have a lot of products that people uses in different ways which is not support by us officially, so if someone comes with that we won't be able to provide support." The product page did not mention going higher than 1080p and while that is correct, it still rubs me the wrong way that the product was silently updated and the reviews that I based my purchase on no longer apply. I will be hesitant to purchase Startech products in the future, knowing I can not trust the product page reviews or forum posts recommending the product to be accurate. ... show more

    • Still Supports Higher resolutions
I saw previous reviews saying that this item no longer supported higher resolutions - that is incorrect. I just purchased another one to test and it runs 1600x1200 @ 85hz. I currently do not have a high end 21" CRT monitor to test pixel clock rates beyond this at the moment. However it can accommodate the highest pixel clock rates that my 19" CRT monitors can accept, Windows also recognizes the monitor and properly labels it as its model number when using this device. Just make sure to connect and turn on the monitor before you boot your machine. I see no functional difference between this and a delock 87685 (costs 3x as much) with my 19" CRT monitors that run 1600x1200 @ 85hz. ... show more
