Description

A skirmish wargame set in a dangerous galaxy where players command a small crew of adventurers hunting for loot, while trying not to call too much attention to their activities. In a galaxy torn apart by the Last War, vast pirate fleets roam from system to system, robbing, extorting, and enslaving. Attempts to organize resistance, or to establish authority over any territory larger than a city, are quickly and brutally crushed. In this dark time, the only way to survive is to be inconspicuous and hope to be overlooked. Amidst this chaos, however, thousands of independent operators--smugglers, relic hunters, freedom fighters, and mercenaries--roam the dead stars in small ships, scratching out a living anyway they can.In Stargrave, players take on the role of one of these independent operators. Perhaps they are a cybernetic veteran of the Last War, a psion fleeing slavers, or a mystic warrior attempting to preserve ancient wisdom. Maybe they are a bounty hunter collecting blood money, a robotics expert pushing the bounds of current technology, or a biomorph bred in the genetanks of some forgotten laboratory. Having chosen their own background, players must hire a crew for their ship, choosing a lieutenant with their own unique skill-set, and a handful of soldiers, mechanics, hackers, and other specialists. Some captains may even recruit strange alien lifeforms with abilities no humanoid could ever possess. Once the players' crews are assembled, they are ready to dive into a campaign. Over a series of games, their crews will have the chance to carry out a variety of missions--recovering lost technology, stealing data, freeing slaves, and fighting back against the pirate fleets. In time, as the crews gain experience, they will become more powerful and hire more talented specialists. The more they grow, however, the more likely it is that a pirate fleet will take note of their activities and come after them! Read more

  • An interesting game
I haven't gotten a chance to play, but the system seems cool. I wish there were more crew options, cause there's not enough choices and variety for my taste.

  • Beautiful Presentation
Stargrave is a beautifully presented skirmish campaign wargame. No specific miniatures are needed. While the game presumes 28mm models will be used, it readily scales up or down to suit player tastes. Additionally, the base size for each miniature is irrelevant for purposes of gameplay. The rules system is streamlined. Play is quickly and speedily resolved without a great deal of complex rules. However, crew creation is moderately complex, and all players will need to read the rules before starting. Not only are there various starting archetypes for the captain and first mate but each has powers which should be understood by all players before starting. For those interested in official miniatures, North Star Military Figures provides three types of mutually compatible sprues for Crew, Troopers, and Mercenaries. Osprey Publishing provides support in the form of freely downloadable crew sheets, printable templates, powers cards, crew creation, and a rules summary. As a final bonus, the first supplement intended for solo play is provided for free. Actually, the core of the system is contained in the free downloads, so potential purchasers who are skeptical should check those out to see how this beautiful game can fit their interests. ... show more

  • Lots of fun
Frostgrave IN SPACE!!!!!!!!!! Stargrave is great! Create a captain and first mate and gather your crew for adventure. Fast fun gameplay. Simple rules to learn, and enough strategy to keep things interesting. Super fun game cant recommend enough.

  • Fantastic minis game
A wonderful system that provides rules for sci fi minis skirmish battles. It's well put together and easily understandable. You could teach the rules to another person in one play through. Kids shouldn't have a difficult time with the rules either. They do make their own line if minis but you don't have to use them. It is minis agnostic. Grab 7-12 minis for your warband. Make sure they have the right size base and play. You will need at least 2 warbands to play with 2 people and if you want to play solo have some spare minis to represent the opposition, maybe 10 more for variety. ... show more

  • Fun But A Little Lazy Science Fiction Miniature Game
The game has an interesting idea for a background and players get to have a team of science fiction miniatures (not manufacturer specific so anything goes) going off and gathering loot while avoiding pirates and other teams. Downside was the obvious lack of any combat going on in other than earth level atmospheres. There were no space suits, rules for zero gravity (or micro gravity) encounters, vacuum, radiation, or other non-earth hazards. The focus was too much on matching Frostgrave types, terminology, and effects. There were some great tables for high tech and alien technology, but the campaign did not allow for cybernetic (or regenerative) options to relieve what otherwise is long term damage to a leader or his first mate. This despite a Cyborg as a base leader! While all these issues could be addressed in follow on books, it seems a bit lazy to not have included base rules and equipment to cover non-earth normal environments in a Science Fiction Space game. ... show more

  • Fun simple game to play!

  • Great game and great book
The author does it again. After playing two of his other games ( Frostgrave and Ghost Archipelago), I bought this one and find it easy to figure out, and fun to play. I play with my kids and they love it too. If your looking for a simple, model agnostic game with a insert your own background , then this game is perfect for you. ... show more

  • Like Frostgrave, but in space!
My friends and I loved Frostgrave, but a lot of them are more interested in sci fi, than in fantasy. Enter Stargrave. It has many of the same rules, mechanics, and the same feel as Frostgrave, but with a sci fi spin on it. Create a captain, create a first mate, hire your crew, and go collect loot! This is a miniatures agnostic game, so you can use whatever you want to represent your team. It offers a pretty deep level up and campaign system, and it's really easy to create your own scenarios to tell your own stories. ... show more
