  • No longer the Top Siders we used to buy.
What has happened to the quality of these shoes. I have worn Sperry Top Sider deck shoes for over 30 years and been very happy with the fit and quality, but this will be my last pair. The quality is extremely poor. The fit was a little tight when new, but that is OK because, being deck shoes you need to soak them and wear them until dry to get the right fit. The problem with these shoes now that they are no longer american made is that if you get them wet ( they are deck shoes and should be made to get wet) they bleed dye all over your feet. The metal grommets through which the side lacings pass are no longer solid rings and they bend outward creating sharp metal thorns that will cut your opposite leg if you should brush your shoe against it (which happens frequently when climbing ladders, etc. aboard a boat). Bottom line; if you are buying shoes to wear where they will never get wet and you don't intend to use them as actual deck shoes they may be OK. If you intend to wear them while sailng or boating stay away from these shoes. I mourn the passing of what I had considered an americam icon. ... show more

  • Shoes falling apart after a month!
My son has worn these for 23 days at school (winter uniform started in mid Oct) and they have already fallen apart. This is absolutely unacceptable considering how much the shoes were, and he's not even hard on this shoes usually! I never want to purchase Sperry's again, I am extremely disappointed.

  • "Wide" is narrower than it used to be.
They got the length (size) right but are too narrow, despite being ordered as 2E "Wide". I've worn Sperry "boat-moc's" for decades and every time I have to replace them, the point of manufacture seems to move deeper into third-world countries and the size (mostly width) keeps getting smaller and narrower. Also, if you wear these without socks (like they are meant to be worn), expect the insole to come loose after a short period. One good thing is that the leather uppers "breathe" will probably last forever but the soles dry rot prematurely. ... show more

  • Buyer Beware! These are not like your old Sperry's
Huge disappointment! Fit is fine, but Sperry cut major corners on the version I bought. I too have been wearing Sperry's for decades. The liner/footbed insert, as others have noted, is only in half the shoe and not entirely glued down. When you wear without socks--like you should--and then take you're foot out the insert sticks to the bottom of your foot and pulls out. This started happening almost immediately. In past Sperry's it took years to get to this point. Worse than that, though, is that Sperry tried to add cushioning to the heel by making some sort of air pockets in it. Wasn't really needed, but it completely screwed up the heel of the shoe. They made it so soft that the solid front edge of the heel pushes in to the sole of your foot when you're standing still and have any weight on your heel. It's uncomfortable and unbelievably annoying. My advice to anyone considering buying is to try them on before buying or at a minimum before you scuff the soles and can't return them. Sperry really screwed up these shoes. Unless they correct, I won't be buying them anymore. I'll probably go for LLBean Camp Moc or Bass or something like that. Huge disappointment because I really loved my old Sperry's. ... show more

  • The classic boat shoe (and frat-boy staple)
I have several pairs of these. I wear the nice ones to work and out on the town. when they get worn they move down to casual wear (and actual use as deck shoes), then to yardwork etc, then when painting or working in the boatyard. When they get stinky I throw them in a bucket overnight with an ounce of clorox, rinse well, and oil them up again. If they are grungy they get slippery inside when they get wet. But If they get wet they dry out again as good as new. Eventually (after 10 -20 years) the sole wears out and the stitching falls off, and I toss them. These were reasonably priced, and I know they will hold up. The texture on the bottom of the sole has changed in the last few decades, but they still have the excellent non-skid siping. ... show more

  • Just A Classic That Works
I am a competitive sailor. I also like having a shoe that looks pretty good under casual conditions and that I can just slip on at the last minute. The Sperry Top-Sider fits the bill on all fronts. This shoe is excellent on a wet, listing deck. I do occasionally wear a shoe for certain conditions when sailing, namely if it's quite hot and my feet are guaranteed to be getting sopping wet. But, even when it's chilly outside, I will race in these while wearing Gore Tex socks. Great shoes. They've been around forever for a reason. ... show more

  • Knock off brand. Do not buy. Sh
I have been struggling with writing thse review as I never want to leave a bad impression. However this shoe is a total Rip off. I bought this for my fiance and after wearing this shoe for a week it started to completely fall apart. The entire front end of the shoes is wore out. It's almost as though the shoe was already being wore and the was resold. We brought it to a shoe repair guy and he said that the shoe is a knock off the original sperry brand and we was not able to repair it based on how it was made. I have purchased the Sperry brand in the past AMD wore it for almost 5 years. You can see my disappointment that a shoe that cost this much only lasted a week. I spent my money on a knock off shoe. I held Amazon in high regard but after this I may never purchase another shoe from this site again. ... show more

  • Outside quality is the same insole and/or glue is off
Something wrong with the glue on the soles. They souls of the interior have a tendency to basically melt to the sides. I don't know how do it describe it other than saying that the glue must be badd and it just gradually lets the insert shift to the side and down to the toe Box. I ripped the insoles out and put them back in and they have been staying put for the most part, however these feel like a Knock off pair as I have owned a great many pairs of Sperry's and never had anything even close to this happen ... show more
