Description

This vibrant publication brings to life four centuries of extraordinary garments and accessories inspired by the natural world Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion explores clothing’s complex relationship with the body through the senses, offering new ways for understanding and experiencing a garment’s inherent artistry. Engaging texts by scholars, scientists, and conservators reveal the history behind over 200 works of fashion while also addressing their fragility and ephemerality. Exceptional new photography by Nick Knight of creations by international couturiers and design houses—including Cristòbal Balenciaga, Thom Browne, Collina Strada, Christian Dior, Gucci, Charles James, LOEWE, Madame Grès, Thebe Magugu, Maison Margiela, Alexander McQueen, Issey Miyake, Paul Poiret, Yves Saint Laurent, Elsa Schiaparelli, Bea Szenfeld, Philip Treacy, Iris van Herpen, Louis Vuitton, and Charles Frederick Worth—further deepens our appreciation for each object’s sensorial integrity. • Soaring beauty, reawakened fashions, publishing excellence - and more
A couple of days after visiting this alluring and luscious exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, my copy of the exhibition catalog arrived. Impressive! This 489-page volume-with-sturdy-slipcase (12 X 9 X 2) provides the ultimate in-depth dive into the exhibit, and could NOT be more extensive. "Case studies" for the various garments are presented including literary passages/references, folkloric significance, museum-centric insights, and curatorial/cultural expertise. If all this sounds dry and ho-hum -- Think again. When the history of our age is written, Andrew Bolton will be remembered as a brilliant genius intent on sharing his various/endless passions and bringing the public along for the ride. Photos by Nick Knight were descriptive and artful. Page design and typography choices were smart/efficient, and the numerous fold-outs and tactile-esque close-ups are spot-on. All in all, the exhibit features a magnificent array of garments (from the Met Collection) and this remarkable catalog makes everything "more so". A total triumph, a la Bolton. ... show more

  • Exquisitely made. Glad I can get one from Amazon.
I have been visiting the MET for about 20 years and have not missed one special exhibition. It is easily the best MET catalog I have seen regarding the illustration quality. Some even surpass those in a fine auction catalog. I have uploaded a few photos. There are about 350 illustrations out of the close-to-500-page book—many fold-out pages with high-resolution photos. I decided to purchase one after reviewing a few pages of a display copy in the MET bookstore. I was very happy to find it on Amazon and that the shipping was complimentary for Prime members. After all, it is a heavy-duty book. ... show more

  • Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion
What a great reference book about the history of Women's clothing and styles. It is especially a good coffee table book for conversations with friends. Good reference book especially if you went to the Met to see the clothing in person.

  • Gorgeous!
I saw this exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum and the pictures in the book really represent the amazing clothes! It’s really a gorgeous book with fabulous fold outs showing up close details. I was going to buy the book in the museum store but my daughter showed me it was cheaper on Amazon.

  • An Amazing Companion Book to a Phenomenal Exhibit
A high-quality book covering a phenomenal MET exhibit. If you like books/art/fashion, any or all of the above, buy this book! I saw the exhibit in June 2024 and am thrilled to have this book as a reference and memento.

  • Great exhibit but catalog so so
I so wanted this catalog to be great. They did a lot with fold outs to help. But I found the photos less than I had hoped. The typeface made the book seem cheap. A disappointment but I must say the book does have value. So three stars. Kind of a disappointment from the MET.

  • Most stunning fashion book
Andrew Bolton has compiled masterworks of fashion into a stunningly beautiful, and educational, book that I will treasure forever. I thank him for his care and diligence as curator.
