  • Just Ok
I really loved "Steal Like an Artist". I felt like it was inspiring and super helpful. This book, not as much. I don't have a problem with sharing my work, and process and giving credit to other artists. Those are all great ideas. I got stuck on the notion that I should be sharing what I'm doing every day. I also don't like the idea of showing works in progress and talking about my process via social media. I know people that do this and unless they're a really great artist, I find this really annoying. There's a narcissistic component to this, that I think is rampant in social media. The idea that I'm such a compelling figure that everyone is interested in every little thing that I do is nauseating as far as I'm concerned. I also think that art shouldn't be talked about too much. Some should be left to mystery. Maybe it's a generational thing. Kleon is quite a bit younger than me, and over-sharing is just the norm now. Doesn't mean I have to like it. ... show more

  • I'm glad it was short.
I was required to read this for a college course with a detailed quiz after so I had to read it more than once. I liked the overall general concepts of the book. But they were pretty basic marketing that most people know after a first time google search (have a website, reach out on social media, remind people you exist). Also the cute artsy format worked most of the time (more on that below). Here's what I didn't like: The constant single sentence celebrity name dropping as examples of success being constantly used. I know Kleon's most famous work is "Steal Like an Artist" but I think he could have done without constantly using other peoples words to make a point where his own would have been fine. Even if it was limited to just once per page instead of 2-3 times it would have been less grating. Also the "art" pages would have fit better if they weren't placed in the middle of a sentence so often. ... show more

  • NOT life changing
I bought this book based on a recommendation from Ali Abdaal’s YouTube channel. (Shout out to Ali!) There he professed that this series of books “changed his life.” It’s safe to say that expectations were set rather too high. Certainly, there’s no way I could ever call this book life-changing. The best I can say is it’s a very short, light read, with occasional thought-provoking quotes. A large chunk of this book will be obvious to anyone who’s grown up using the internet. Perhaps in 2014 when it was first published there was more of a need for such insights. We often forget how fast things change. One thing that bugged me throughout was the ugly and unnecessary illustrations that failed to add anything—blacked out words, reminiscent of the pasted newspaper letters from a cartoon kidnapper’s ransom note. ... show more

  • Very disappointing
After reading his How to Steal Like an Artist I was eager to read this one as well. This book failed on many levels. Its main focus is internet/social media recognition. Very little on actually showing work. And it is already outdated. The internet/social media world has drastically changed in four years and by following his suggestions your work would most likely be shared and copied and made into memes all outside your realm of ownership. If possible I am returning this book. ... show more

  • A Fantastic Book for Writers and Other Creative People
Such a fantastic book for creatively minded people! It’s the kind of book that you can pick up and set down over and over again. A good book to have on your nightstand or—dare I say it—in your bathroom. (Yes, I’m a bathroom reader. ) I’d certainly give it away as a gift. It would make a nice graduation present for a budding artist or writer. I constantly over-think my writing. I’m afraid to share my words and feelings with others. I’ve certainly grown as a person over the years, but my journey seems to be three steps forward, two steps back. Yes, I’m making progress. Slowly. SOOO slowly. This book helped me to realize that what I’m doing DOES have value and I appreciate the author reminding me of this! Thank you, Austin Kleon, for sharing your ideas! ... show more

  • The Push I Need It
I'm a perfectionist and I have always thought that you should not show your work until is finished (just like Picasso). But now days you really need to show your work and I was able to understand how people connect with your making process as well. I really recommend you to read this book if you are still hesitating about going out there and start building a community around the things you love to do. ... show more

  • Bought all 3 in the series
Super great, thoughtful, reminder content. Not instructive but more associative continent with past and present example snippets. Books are well done, lots of pages on graphics, poems, and wasted space. Did I come away with a ton of learning, no, not really. I expected more, but still had many things to look back on, and I am sharing these books with my GF to help her on her projects. Great more for beginning creatives over 25+ year industry people that have their fingers on the pulse of the industry since there’s an influencer born every minute. He writes very well, which allowed me to reach his 3 books in one day, with plenty of time left over for a dinner date with my GF and ice cream after! I do recommend and he still gets 5 stars for I know this is great content others do need to hear and it was put together nicely! ... show more

  • "How to Steal Like an Artist" as well
This author has written, "How to Steal Like an Artist" as well. Both great books in my opinion. Not too long - and easy reads. Very pleasant and fun books. Author has great sense of humor. I bought it for my sister as well. She has everything, and I know she has trouble with motivating herself. This is for people who are creative, who do create, and who want to share what they create, paint, write, invent. Highly Highly Recommended. I am collecting digital images to copy color schemes in what would be considered original art, digitally painted with the idea to use the art as inspiration, and yet paint my own stuff. There is a difference between stealing art and using art as inspiration; though the author says it differently. This particular book takes you to the next step where your work will get seen. For me it is just for fun. I do not sell. But we can all use a compliment or two, right? A captive audience. Some day maybe an offer to have me do commissioned work....errr maybe. ... show more
