Description

By the 1 New York Times bestselling author and unparalleled master of historical fiction, James Clavell's Shogun is soon to be a major FX/Hulu TV series!Shogun, the classic epic novel of feudal Japan that captured the heart of a culture and the imagination of the world, is now available for the first time in serial format. Part One contains the first half of the complete novel. After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen--Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne's loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss, and he is torn between two worlds that will each be forever changed. Powerful and engrossing, capturing both the rich pageantry and stark realities of life in feudal Japan, Shogun is a critically acclaimed powerhouse of a book. Heart-stopping, edge-of-your-seat action melds seamlessly with intricate historical detail and raw human emotion. Endlessly compelling, this sweeping saga captivated the world to become not only one of the best-selling novels of all time but one of the highest-rated television miniseries, as well as inspiring a nationwide surge of interest in the culture of Japan. Shakespearean in both scope and depth, Shogun is, as the New York Times put it, ‘'not only something you read--you live it.'‘ Also available: Shogun: Part Two Read more

  • Brilliant!
SHOGUN is a brilliant read. The plot is tight, and the storytelling is superb. Character development is thorough and multi-layered. It's a must-read for anyone interested in historical Japan.

  • Great story, highly recommend
I really enjoyed the book after watching the show first, it allowed me to visualize the book so much better, as the whole vibe of the show is one of the main things I liked about it. I'm learning quite a bit about this period in Japanese history that I had no idea about, especially as it pertains to samurai vs peasants. Overall, it's written well, and my only complaint is sometimes the story switches characters' point of view from one paragraph to the next so it's kinda whiplash-y feeling sometimes. Though, this is probably because I'm used to modern fiction, like A Song of Ice and Fire, or The Expanse, where each chapter is the point of view of a single character. Will be diving into Part Two immediately and I can't wait! ... show more

  • Brilliant book!
I loved this book, and would have given it 5 stars, but eventually was so put off by the vulgarity that I marked it down. Nevertheless, I do think the book is really well done and should be admired for its great qualities. Worldbuilding and characters are its best qualities. That, and the non-stop action that won't let you rest. I recommend it (with caution about language) to everyoone. ... show more

  • Amazing!
Incredible first half! Could hardly put it down! I am so glad I read this after watching the Hulu show (which I thoroughly enjoyed…the series followed the book much more than I realized! ) then reading the story, with the rich backstories of the characters that are so well developed, makes it so much simpler to keep the characters straight. After I’ve read the second half, I will rewatch the series with much more insight and clarity! ... show more

  • This book has survived well since 1975
I first read this book while posted to the island of Ponape in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands [now Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia] in 1977. I was out in the boonies at the old Forestry Station and, over the course of a Thanksgiving holiday, read the entire book. I am excited to do so again now, 46+ years later. It is well-written and keeps one thoroughly enmeshed in the storyline. I strongly encourage anyone interested to read it and if you have seen the old Shogun mini-series or are considering the new version, read the book first. It is much richer in every aspect. ... show more

  • Amazing, entrancing book
A great read from beginning to end. Highly recommend. It accurately captures human feelings, emotions, and the clash of the different cultures and attitudes.

  • shōgun is masterful!
James Clavell was a masterful storyteller. This book is a page-turner, full of intriguing detail. While his description is artful & tantalizing, his plot is clear, well crafted & leaves you thirsting for more. The characters come to life & their interaction pulls us into an exotic history & drama. The book far over shadows the film. ... show more

  • Tremendous capturing of Japan’s story
Clavell is a master storyteller and an artist with his words. I can envision so clearly the sights, sounds, and emotions of this grand tale! I love Japan and its rich history and culture. He does it all with honor and balance.
