  • How'd I miss these guys?
What a pleasant surprise! Purchased on a whim. From the opening guitar riffs and raspy vocal of 'Burned out love" through 22 terrific songs, these guys get it done. What a great car cd! Good songwriting ( slightly bubblegum w/o offending),an unwavering beat that keeps you tapping your feet and just enough variety in the songs to let the miles fly by unnoticed. Crank up the volume and enjoy, but remember those double fines in construction zones! ... show more

  • Get their Message
I rarely do the "Join a Fan Club" thing for bands, but there was one band where I was a card carrying member. Zion Illinois' Shoes were that band. From the first banging drumbeats of "Tomorrow Night" from "Present Tense," I was hooked. Folded up on a piece of "Boomerang" note paper is a Thank You" note from Jeff Murphy tucked inside my copy of "Shoes Best." I am a fan from way back. That should not intimidate you from listening to this CD, released after the band had returned to the world of DIY releasing and relatively early in the age of the CD. Somewhere in their Elektra contract was a rights/reversion clause, enabling the band to get their masters back. So "Best" contains choice selections from their three Elektra releases, one from the initial "Black Vinyl Shoes" album, three from the self released 1984 "Silhouette," one from the rare "Shoes On Ice" EP, and the first single from the not-yet issued "Stolen Wishes." Over an hour of incredible power-poppish new-wave and a strong argument for the greatness of The Shoes. They moved effortlessly between boy-girl crush songs ("Tomorrow Night," Now and Then"), anticipation songs ("Love is Like a Bullet,") and heartbreak ("Karen," "I Don't Want to Hear It"). There was also a playfully mean streak in their breakup songs ("I Don't Miss You" and "Too Late") that was more playful than mean-spirited, no easy trick to pull off. When required, they could whip up a sugar-coated fuzzy guitar rock ("Mayday" "Hate To Run") and the whispery longing of a solid ballad ("The Summer Rain"). Add the the core trio of brothers Jeff and John Murphy and Gary Klebe could harmonize like nobody's business and you get the story of a remarkable American Band that deserved better, yet has deservedly maintained their status as power-pop icons. ... show more

  • nah
I heard some early Shoes records that were just released on the Numero Group and i was intrigued. But this is not for me- sounds like a lightweight Rick Springfield to these ears.

  • Needs upgrade
This is a great selection of Shoes' (yes, it's Shoes, not THE Shoes) best songs but it was issued in the early 90's and is sorely needing of a sonic upgrade. The volume is woefully inadequate, and I have to turn up the volume substantially whenever a Shoes song comes up (I tend to play mixes of different artists, whether it be on disc or iPod). The versions on the later Shoes two-fer CD's sound MUCH better, but they are now getting harder to find, therefore, costing much more than they did originally. ... show more

  • A mixed bag...
This is a 5 star review with a caveat, the caveat being that I don't like about half of the material on this CD, and might use the adjectives sappy or maudlin to describe it. And Shoes can sometimes come off sounding too "sacharine sweet" and contrived for me. (And the general presentation of the band and it's music sometimes leaves me wondering if I am listening to some low budget, independent, "boy band"). But that being said, by my loose standards, there is enough good to great stuff on here to highly recommend it. Shoes have done some of the best pop rock, songs like "Boys Don't Lie" and "Too Late" are top shelf and give testament to how great this band could be. And there are other songs that are very good to great, like the Cheap Trickish song "She Satisfies", and others like "Tomorrow Night", "Your Imagination", "Now and Then", "The Summer Rain", "I Don't Wanna Hear It", "I Don't Miss You" and "Burned Out Love". These songs are the basis for the 5 star review. So this "greatest hits" compilation is a mixed bag for me, there are many great songs but you have to weed them out from the chaff. ... show more

  • a perfect "power pop" band that most have never heard of
Shoes were a Chicago suburb D.I.Y. power pop band. They had a lot of talent but never made it. This compilation is excellent especially if your a fan of Beatles, Rubinoos, Fountains of Wayne, Rasperies, Knack and all the other power pop favorites. What makes the Shoes so good is that they were really good songwriters. There are a lot of songs on this compilation yet the tunes are different and not repetitive. If somebody with the proper business acumen ever were to get involved with this band they would have been much bigger. It seems as though the band has a bigger fololwing today (b/c of all the power pop affecionados) then when they were around. The music has a real lasting quality and sounds fresh and contemporpary today. If you are looking at the entry for the "Shoes" it means that you are really into music. Go ahead take a chance, be adventurous and try a listen for this wonderful band. Evey song is a quality tune. I wont tell you the highlights since nobody is familiar with the titles anyway. This is classic jangly guitars, multi-part harmony songs. What hampered their career probably also enhanced the music. This stuff has not been infuenced by any corporate interests and is purely the work of a young band following their own muse. ... show more
