  • Best Helmet I’ve Ever Owned
Size: Large Color: BLACK
I’ve owned many different helmets over the years, half helmets, 3/4, and full face helmets. This one is by far the best out of all of them. My main two helmets before this one were an Icon Airframe Pro and a Bell Qualifier, the Shoei surpassed both in every way. Here are some categories: Comfort - 5/5, very comfortable helmet once you put it on, no pressure points or hot spots. Only issue is putting the helmet on and taking it off, it’s super tight as it’s supposed to be but it tears the back of my ears, drawing blood. Another thing to bring up is that I always wear sunglasses under my helmet when I ride, this helmet fits glasses perfect without forcing them against your head at all. Sizing - Fits pretty standard, I wear a large in the Icon helmet and a medium in the bell, I chose a large for the Shoei and it fits perfect. Ventilation - The vents in the helmet work very well and I can feel the airflow particularly on the top of my head when they are open. The only complaint I have is the large vent on the forehead is awkward to operate and is hard to tell it if is open or closed when wearing gloves. The visor opening mechanism takes some getting used to but once you figure it out it works great. Quietness - This was my main reason I purchased this helmet, I had heard great things about this being one of the quietest helmets on the market. After riding with it, it’s significantly quieter than both my icon and bell. Although it does not completely eliminate road/wind noise, it does do a good job muffling it. When you have the visor open, you can hear everything but as soon as you close the visor everything gets so much quieter. Clarity - The helmet has great visibility and not really any blind spots. My only complaint is the visor fogs fairly quickly even with the breath guard. The pin lock should eliminate this but I haven’t tried it yet as it’s not a huge issue. Bluetooth Compatibility - This helmet fits a Bluetooth headset well, has built in pockets for the speakers and is easy to install. Quiet enough that I can clearly hear music even up to 80+ mph. Weight - This helmet feels a few ounces heavier than my bell, I don’t know for sure but it feels heavier when holding them. This is no problem at all as the incredible aerodynamics counter the weight when riding. Aerodynamics - All I can say is wow. The aerodynamics of the helmet are amazing. From low speeds to higher interstate speeds, the helmet has significantly less drag than any other helmet I’ve used. I ride an aggressive club styled cruiser and even with the more laid back position when compared to the upright sport bike position, it performs very well. On the interstate I’ve noticed that when I turn my head, there is almost no difference than when you are looking forward, I say that as a good thing as there is minimal drag and wind resistance. Quality - The helmet feels solid and well made. From the outer shell to the internals, everything feels and looks like a quality product. Extras - The helmet comes with a clear visor, a breath guard, a chin curtain, and the pin lock insert. I can’t speak for the pin lock as I haven’t used it yet, but the other components are nice. Another factor to consider is the availability of aftermarket visors, last year I couldn’t find many at all but now there are a few companies that make great visors for the 1400 for a good price. A quick overview of the helmet, overall an amazing, quality helmet. Although it is expensive, it is well worth the money not only for safety, but also for looks and rider comfort. ... show more

  • My favorite Shoei yet
Size: XX-Large Color: MATTE BLACK
I wore a bunch of non-Shoei helmets when I was younger and poorer before splurging on an RF-700 back in the 90s. At the time, I bought it solely because it fit my giant head; I was tired of getting headaches on long rides from my other helmets. I quickly came to realize, though, that Shoei makes much nicer helmets than anything I'd worn previously, and that with the extra cost came extra quality. Since then, I've always replaced my Shoeis with another Shoei when they'd wear out. I've had a bunch, and they've all been excellent (except the Z-II, which just had an awful shape around the jaw). This is the best one yet. Most notably, the RF-1400 is REALLY quiet. It's especially good at filtering out high frequency sounds, while leaving others audible. Like all RFs, it seems optimized for an upright/forward riding position, so I sometimes catch a bit of extra wind noise when I'm sitting way back on my cruiser. But, I can adjust that with a slight tilt of my head (or just better posture). I've taken a few long rides so far without my earplugs, and my ears feel better having worn the RF-1400 than with any plugs I've ever tried. Plus, it's more comfortable and I can hear traffic/etc. around me better with just the helmet. It's truly joyful to ride with this well-balanced sound. From reading the manual the inner padding is removable, too. I haven't pulled them out yet for fear of messing something up, but I'll definitely wash or replace them when they get grungy. Which they will - I'd love to wear a helmet liner to keep things clean, but due to my head size/shape I don't have enough room to spare. On the down side, I find that the cheek pads are too tight for my face. I have a 60cm head, am relatively lean (6'2" 195 lbs) and am wearing the largest XXL model, but it still presses on my face quite tightly. It doesn't hurt, but neither is it comfortable. I see that you can replace the cheek pads with different sizes, but that the XXL already comes with the thinnest pads :( I'm hoping they'll crush down a bit with use. The lens is nice, as expected. The new style quick-release is tough to use compared to the older models, but it works well enough once you get the hang of it. The lens also comes with some weird add-on anti-fog system that, after reading and experimenting with, I can say with confidence that I'll never use. The lens has some little studs for mounting that fog thingy that I wish weren't there; they just get in the way when cleaning. When this lens wears out, I'll see if I can get a normal one without the studs. There's also some red fabric parts around the bottom edge of the helmet that spoil the look of the matte black shell (IMHO) - but, if the manual is correct, are actually important. Apparently by cutting through the red parts the EMTs can pull the rigid part of the helmet off of your head without moving your neck (as much, at least) if you've been in an accident. Hopefully I'll never need that feature but I'm glad it's there - and happy to have the bright red parts to let the EMTs know it's there, too. This helmet is very expensive, but also very good. I think you can get equally safe helmets from other quality brands at a lesser price, so don't feel that you need to make a deal with the devil to get a Shoei if you're on a budget. If you have the means, though, you'll appreciate the quality of the RF-1400, especially on those long touring rides when you pull into the gas station and realize that your ears aren't ringing. ... show more

  • Great helmet, not as silent as I hoped.
Size: Medium Color: BLACK
This is a very nice helmet. Big upgrade from the 1200. Reduced wind noise but I still don't get any noise canceling features that I was looking for. I still need to wear ear plugs. But I don't think this type of helmet is meant to be noise canceling. Happy customer. Recommended

  • Probably the best helmet money can buy.
Size: Large Color: WHITE
I am returning this helmet because the size chart at Shoei.com indicated that this would fit, but it is too small. So why did I rate "comfort" as 5? Because the pressure around my face and head was consistent all around, indicating that the next size up will be a perfect fit. I wear a 7-1/4 to 7-3/8 hat, and my head measures exactly 23cm around, and since helmet size L is too tight, I am ordering the same helmet in XL size, which should fit just fine. Putting this helmet on and taking it off is a real chore. I was surprised my ears were still attached to my head. I recommend buying a couple of "skull caps" that come down over the tops of a person's ears, which should make putting the helmet on and taking it off a lot easier on the ears, while improving ventilation as well. The quality and finish of the helmet and the webbing/padding inside are top of the line. Since my motorcycle is my only source of transportation, it makes sense to get the best helmet, IMHO. ... show more

  • Upgrade from an old model
Size: XX-Large Color: MATTE BLACK
The RF-1400 was purchased by me as a replacement for my old RF-1100 which is well worn and has exceeded its useful life. As usual, Shoei has thoughtfully designed the RF-1400 for rider comfort. The large vents are easy to reach and gulp in air, while the rear vent uses negative pressure to exhaust hot air away from my head. My previous helmet did not offer great ventilation, so I often rode with the shield slightly open, increasing the risk of foreign objects and/or bugs infiltrating the helmet, and increasing my risk of injury in the event of a crash. With the RF-1400, I am able to keep the shield closed and locked while riding. Shoei moved the locking mechanism to the center of the visor, which makes it easier to use with either hand, and, according to them, reduces the stress on the base plate. It was an adjustment to learn how to unlatch and raise the shield, but only took a few tries before it became second nature. The redesigned shell is purported to reduce lift and drag by 6% and 4%, respectively. I can't validate those percentage claims as my wind tunnel is down for maintenance, but it certainly FEELS more aerodynamic than my older model. The vortex generators molded into the sides of the shield are designed to reduce wind turbulence. Maybe they do, but telling people I have vortex generators on my helmet makes me feel like an F1 driver, so that's a plus. The helmet itself is a beautiful matte black finish, came with a Pinlock EVO insert which is designed to reduce visor fogging, and comes with a soft carry/storage bag to help safeguard against accidental damage. It feels lighter while wearing than my previous model, and the ability to keep the shield closed and locked is a plus for me. The shield closes tightly and doesn't seem to have any leaks, and the helmet itself is quiet. While I still wear earplugs on long rides, I appreciate the reduction in wind noise compared to my previous model. While expensive, the SNELL certification was important to me in ensuring I would have the maximum amount of protection in the event of a crash. This is my third Shoei helmet and will certainly not be my last. ... show more

  • Great Helmet!
Size: Large Color: WHITE
There have many reviews of this helmet so I am going to stick to what things I found. I wear a large in each of the Shoei helmets I have. This one is no exception though as my first full face, I found the fit to be really snug. Not uncomfortable mind you, but SNUG. It's a bit of a process to get it on, again, not problematic in any way, but nonetheless a process. I find the field of vision to be no less than any of the open face Shoeis I have owned. The visor when down, cuts noise noticeably, but in warm/hot weather as in above 80 degrees, makes the helmet warmer. I generally wear a skull cap under the helmet to wick away perspiration and that helps. Ventilation is certainly adequate, but it's not like the thing is going to be air conditioned. I tried the chin screen and found that it wanted to hang up on my nose when removing the helmet so I removed it completely. Others may have different experiences. Mounting my intercom headset presented come challenges. I have a GL 1800 and use the bike's existing intercom system. The cutouts in the helmet seem a bit small for the speakers which came with the IMC Motocom intercom system I use. When I first mounted the speakers into the cutouts they pushed against my ears and I think this stems from the snug fit of the helmet. I skirted that issue by cutting up the round selfsticking velcro mounts for the speakers and making smaller pieces which I was able to put down into the cutouts and pressed the speakers down into the cutouts. That maneuver helped and essentially resolved the problem of the speakers pressing against my ears. The newer bluetooth communication setups may have smaller speaker which may fit into those helmet cutouts so you may not have the issue I had. A Pinlock antifog panel comes with the helmet and will eliminate any cold weather fogging. The Shoei RF-1400 is pricey, but I feel safer in a full face and the comfort, fit, and finish is there. Good buy and no regrets! ... show more

  • Disappointed, wanted to love this
Size: Small Color: MATTE BLACK
I did tons of research before pulling the trigger on this helmet and for the high price I was expecting perfection. I followed the size chart exactly and I was at the upper end of the small size at hair below 56cm but still in the small category. I have an intermediate oval head. I read reviews that some claimed tight cheek pads and how getting the helmet on & off could be torture but for the sake of quietness once the helmet was on. I was willing to make this sacrifice however once I jammed this helmet on nearly ripping my ears off it badly squeezed my face. Understanding helmets need to break-in a bit I still really wanted to give it a chance. Within minutes my face was beet red and if I opened my mouth to speak, the pressure pushed my cheeks in the way of my teeth on both sides of the mouth. Considerable pressure on the jaw as well. The top my head was snug although okay- but that face pressure... Between the full retail price of the helmet and the transition visor (at 2 Bills alone) it was already very expensive so I didn't want to buy smaller cheek pads which may have worked. Ended up returning both for a nice quality Bell at a fraction of the price. Would recommend sizing up on the helmet and before I buy another Shoei will definitely find a retailer to try them out first. ... show more

  • Great but still room for improvement
Size: Medium Color: BLACK
I started at age 16 with my first Shoei. However at some point around 23, my head shape changed to Arai. This was back when Shoei was For round heads, Arai was for oval. So I spent 30 years in Arai Quantum’s. I sold my adv bike and decided to give sport bikes one last go before I cAnt take the position any longer. So I decided to give Shoei a shot as I saw they now had a medium oval shape. So things I love about this- it’s very lightweight, it’s quiet, it looks great, no forehead hot spots. Things I feel need improvement- the shield movement is very notchy and not smooth like Arai. So you have some pre-set openings. Next the ear cups are very tight and bend my ears over which is uncomfortable and makes It hard to fit glasses. I know you can change these out but I hope these will break in over time ( just Owned a month so far). I received a pin lock shield to try with the helmet- it’s ok but when used in conjunction with the supplied breath shield, it actually fogs more. So it’s an either or. Last I wish the chin curtain and nose/breath shield weee integrated into the helmet and not extra pieces that have to be slotted in. Anyway all things considered I decided to keep the helmet rather than go back to a tried and true, so I think that says it all. At this price point this is a good buy for a quality helmet. ... show more

  • A great helmet. Allow it some time to break in.
Size: Medium Color: MATTE BLACK
I'm just getting back to motorcycles after 40 years. I decided if I splurged on any gear at all, it would be the helmet. I did a ton of research and finally decided on this helmet. Shoei's reputation precedes itself, so I know the product itself was already great. I ordered a medium, and when I first slid -- CRAMMED-- it onto my noggin, I thought my skull would cave it after my eyes popped out. I ordered a medium, as my head is small (and, as my skull throbbed, it was evidence of a lack of brains as well) but I took few breaths and the pounding eased a bit. About ten minutes later I couldn't fee a single pressure point-- and, no, it's not because my head was numb. So, it needed a little break in time. After walking around the house with it on for half and hour at a time for a few days-- driving my wife nuts and scaring the cat-- it became quite comfortable. If I'd sent it back after the first try on, it would have been a huge mistake. It's still snug, but by no means uncomfortable. Grabbing the jaw and pulling from side to side, it doesn't budge an inch, but it doesn't pinch either. A sharp shake of the head, nodding like a headbanger, and the helmet doesn't shift an inch. Not even a quarter inch. The helmet is light, about three and a half pounds (I guess it's heavier than the RF 1200), and when it's on my head it by no means feels bulky and, now, not constrictive. My first impulse was to send it right back-- if I could ever get it off-- and order a large. I'm glad I didn't. It would have been a huge mistake. Now, I hope I never have to find out how well it works. But, if that event occurs, I'm very confident I made the right choice. ... show more
