Description

This volume presents a reference of the motive power and equipment of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway 1906-1977. The 144 miles of the SD&AE operated from the cool tidewaters of San Diego Bay to a Southern Pacific connection on the scorching sands at Yuma Arizona The trains ran through stark, desolate desert scenery and over the spectacular rocky Laguna Mountains. This gave the SD&AE a unique majesty and beauty that rivaled the most scenic lines in North America. The focus of this volume is an in depth review of the steam locomotives, motor cars, and rolling stock of this little known railroad. A complete pictorial history of each of the engines is presented. And it includes the changes and modifications to each each locomotive. as well as an overview of leased Southern Pacific steam and diesel power. (The SD&AE was a wholly owned subsidiary of the Southern Pacific from 1933-1976). It also has a brief overview history of the railroad and predecessor companies. The 'connecting' railroads (US Gypsum, Western Salt and NAS North Island) are also reviewed. Operation of the railroad over the years of 1919-1977 is documented. The book is lavishly illustrated with 24 original full color paintings by the author and over 250 black and white and color photographs. Included are the official SD&AE 1929 and 1943 locomotive and tender diagrams. For more great railroad and naval art please visitRead more

The author has done a fine piece of work detailing the motive power and equipment of the SD&AE in this book. Wayne's artwork is an added jewel to this fine piece of history. Buy this book for the railroads link to the Southern Pacific, or simply just to learn more about this fascinating and mostly little known railroad. The authors artwork is such a fine addition to the black and white and color photos that make up this book, that the purchase of the book is worth the price just to enjoy his fine art work dealing with the SD&AE. I learned a lot about this railroad that some called, "The Impossible Railroad", especially due to the fine quality of the black and white photos. For historic images, they are all crystal clear, showing all the engine, tender and background scenes that steam era and diesel fans will enjoy exploring. ... show more
