  • Works great once I got all the pieces in place
Color: MultiColored
Bought this for recording audiobooks, so I can't speak to any music-specific qualities. Because of my total lack of experience with recording equipment, I ended up having to do multiple orders before I could use this. I needed a mic stand to hold it upright, even though I record at a desk, and a mixer to connect it to my computer. I also ended up having to build myself what I affectionately refer to as my "padded cell" to record inside, because the mic picks up echoes like crazy, but I guess that comes with the territory of using something this sensitive. Now that I've got a fully working home studio in place, I couldn't be happier with it. The sound quality is fantastic and professional, which is all that matters, and even with all the add-ons, it's a really good value. ... show more

  • Phenomenal bang for your buck, able to compete with far more expensive mics.
Color: MultiColored
I recently purchased the Rode NT1-A to do a sound test with my Sennheiser MK-416. I am a professional voice actor with a broadcast-quality home studio--unfortunately, I also live 10 minutes from LAX airport, and even with a well-built studio, the air traffic can affect recordings. In an effort to deal with this problem, I wanted to try out the Rode for its 'background noise reduction', and compare the final sound with my Sennheiser. Here's what I learned: - The Sennheiser MK-416 still resulted in the clearest, warmest sound, and quietest background noise when positioned properly (it's a directional / shotgun mic, so position is much more crucial than for a Cardioid like the Rode) - The Rode NT1-A, however, was honestly not far off at all. The sound was a bit sharper at certain tones, but very clear. The background noise, while overall a bit louder than the Sennheiser, was significantly reduced--particularly at the higher frequencies, nearly nonexistent when looking at the spectral imaging. - The Sennheiser is a $1,000 mic by itself...the Rode is $215 with an entire package of add-ons. Bottom line: while the Rode NT1-A isn't quite on par with a top-end mic like the Sennheiser MK-416, it's really darn close--and a fraction of the price. I can honestly say it's the best value and deal I've found as far as microphones go, giving a surprisingly great quality while remaining even more surprisingly affordable. In the end, while I will continue using my Sennheiser, I HIGHLY recommend anyone looking for a fantastic mic to use until you're ready to jump to the pricey, top-tier options, to try the Rode NT1-A. Best "bang-for-your-buck" microphone I've found, by far, and one that is good certainly enough for professional voiceover work. Five stars, hands down. ... show more

  • Worked and THEN FAILED
Color: MultiColored
At first I loved this microphone. The sound was crisp, clear, and it picked up great. But, I had stopped using it, and it sat in a controlled space for a few weeks.. I go to use it again, and nothing. It picked up faint vibrations, but did not pick up my voice at all until squeezed at the point where my voice alone is to go. There is a short of some sort in this design. Badly done!! Seems like a knock-off as well. Unfortunately, at this time, I had already passed my return window, or else I would have returned it. So, I tested my interface and cables with another mike, all worked well. This microphone is cheaply made, and is not worth the money. Sad, because so many people are saying its good. This microphone is NOT A WELL MADE MICROPHONE. It should last through non-use. Never abused, gently handled. There is no excuse for failure such as this. I am used to handling electronics, since that is one of my fields, and for something to fail all of the sudden is a manufacturing error/fault. Very disappointed. ... show more

  • Excellent Value, Incredibly Clean
Color: MultiColored
I'm the CIO of a startup, and as we start up I tend to wear quite a few hats. Recently, one of those hats has involved putting together professional quality help videos for our product. After working with a number of cheap mics for a while, and using Adobe Audition to clean up the background noise from the voiceover audio, I did a reasonable amount of research and settled on the Rode NT1-A as a) the quality of my voiceover audio was still lacking and b) the production time was not cost-effective. I'm using the NT1-A with an AudioBox USB and Windows 10, Adobe Auditon CC and Adobe Premiere CC. I have the mic set up in a walk in closet full of clothes which gives me a huge amount of sound dampening without any of the fuss or cost of a sound booth, and either run AC-7 Core HD, or use my wireless keyboard and mouse with a remote monitor (25 ft. HDMI cable) to manage my sessions via Adobe Audition. See the attached image. The need to apply any effects or to do any background noise cleanup is completely gone - there simply is no background hum nor hiss of any kind as I've isolated properly from the noise of my PC fans. I highly recommend watching the short videos provided on the Studio Tips DVD that they include with the mic. Understanding the cardioid polar pickup pattern and how it affects tone based on the rotation of the microphone is very valuable, among other tips and tricks that they provide. ... show more

Who cares what the old mic was. It was crap. I have been eye balling this mic for some time now. I put in quite a bit of effort on the research. Hands down for the money this is the best buy for a mic. I love it. I love the nice warm sound it brings. Dont take my work for it. Pull up mics in the $700-1200 range... i mean allll the numbers, and then pull up this mic. Its clear as day... the value of this mic surpasses its retail by far. The seller and the entire buying experience was painless. Its the waiting that sucks! Thanks Guys! ... show more

  • Excellent mic, excellent value.
Color: MultiColored
I bought this as an upgrade for a used AT mic I bought, in the hopes it would help me with my audiobook narrations. I saw many of the other reviews, and checked out a dozen other mics before pulling the trigger. Boy, am I glad I did. I strongly recommend this mic kit to anyone starting out with vocal recording. I am very impressed with the quality of this microphone, even more so given the reasonable cost. ... show more
