Over the course of several weeks I tried to find new dress boots online as well as via a large super mall. After two unsuccessful attempts with Amazon - 11.5 Chucka Boot and 10.5 W Rockport Storm Surge - I landed on these Rockport Men's Northfield Waterproof Boot in the 11.5 W size. My previous boot sizes (Merrill and Timberland) would range from 10.5 W to 11. My Merrill's are brown, purchased from Dicks, are extremely comfortable and suitable for hiking, but not going out. My Timberlands look pretty good, but have been re-glued/sown about three times now and have never been very comfortable, requiring an aftermarket insole to get even close to wearable for long periods. The biggest issue I generally have is my thick instep, which makes boot shopping very frustrating. Rockport Men's Northfield Waterproof Boots fit very well with thick socks, and allow me a bit of wiggle room for comfortable wear on stage, which is their primary use. At the super mall, I tried about a dozen brands, including Dockers and some others which I found to be very uncomfortable. After being exposed to 100s of people at the mall, I came down with a bad cold, which made me glad to go back to the online option. Prices in stores are out of control too, so I am happy with this purchase all around. These Rockport Men's Northfield Waterproof Boot may not be 100% what I was after in terms of style (maybe 80%), but I wore them for a gig, a 4-hour workshop, and an 8-hr drive, and they passed with flying colors. I'd keep them around, even if I find something more stylish, which is not very likely .

I have found these chukka boots to be excellent in every way but one. They are quite comfortable right out of the box. The size runs a little large, I had to go to a half size smaller than I usually wear, and this size has plenty of room. I might have gone a full size smaller but didn't want to chance them being too small. The are very quiet, making almost no sound on wood or concrete floors. The soles seem to have a good grip without being so aggressive as to pick up small pebbles like some boots do. I felt it necessary to reduce the score by one star because of the finger loop on the rear of the boot top. The finger loop is there as an aid for getting your heel into the boot easily. The loop on these boots are far too small to get a finger into, even my little finger, and my fingers are not large by any means. I find this to be very frustrating every time I put them on. The manufacturer needs to realize that that little loop is not just there for decoration. Because of this, I will probably not be buying this model again.

The boots are excellent. Super comfortable the first day I put them on. I'd give them 5 starts, except Rockport went full discount on the shoelaces. Within a week they were starting to fray and fall apart. Too bad, for the money you'd think they spend a few more cents on the laces.

I love the Northfield shoe line, I have 3 pairs that I wear interchangeably. I was glad to see they have a chukka boot version, so I can ride my motorcycle to work and still have acceptable "dress shoes". I have lots of foot problems, but the 11W size fits me great and the soft soles help a lot with comfort. Why only 4 stars? As a lot of people have mentioned, the soles might be a bit TOO soft - they do wear quickly and when worn smooth are slippery in the wet. I barely got a year out of my first pair but I love the fit so much I just bought multiple pairs in different colors and rotate them.

January 2022 PROS: Affordable. Look good - a step above men's work boots. Doesn't look like a clown-shoe like other men's boots. Comfortable. Good strong laces and eyelets. Plenty of room for my toes and no rubbing on my heel. Plenty of color options. CONS: Quality. I have two pairs of these boots, and both make a "schwack" sound when I walk. Very annoying when you're walking in a quiet space with other people around. Not sure if its the leather upper where the toes bend snapping back into shape, or something in the sole, but every step makes that noise. Little to no insulation. Even with heavy wool socks, my feet quickly feel cold when you're outside on a cold day for more than a few minutes. Tag that came with boots mentions synthetic leather, but I'm not even sure which part of the boot is synthetic. These are "good enough" boots for me. I don't want to spend $400 for a high-quality pair of boots as I'm not that fashionable and I don't need work-quality boots. I don't expect these to last a lifetime and I'm not torturing them by walking in heavy snow or wet conditions. If you're constantly having to walk in wintery or wet conditions, I'm not sure I'd recommend these. But for in the home/office or around town, they're fine.
