Top Amazon Reviews

  • Cheaply Manufactured Junk
Size: 8 Wide Color: Black
My old Rockports are a bit too scuffed-up to wear with anything nice. Yes, I did read the reviews before buying these Rockport Northfield Oxfords, and I'm here to confirm what is being reported over and over again by Amazon customers: while somewhat comfortable on the feet, these shoes are built with poor quality materials, and it is virtually impossible to imagine them lasting more than a couple of months. The upper parts of the shoe feel like cheap leather, if they are real leather at all (highly doubtful). But the number-one thing that REALLY makes this feel like a disposable pair of shoes is the cheap foam sole. My old Rockports? They have a VIBRAM, hard rubber sole that is still going strong after at least 10 years of fairly heavy use! Sure, if you were trying to cut costs you might downgrade to a non-vibram sole that is still hard rubber... but to a foam sole? On a shoe made for adults? That is absolutely nonsensical. These are AT BEST on par with any of the CHEAPEST pair of black shoes you'd buy from a discount shoe retailer at your local mall. For fifty-two bucks on sale I thought they might prove to be acceptable, but now that I've inspected them I honestly don't think I'd be able to live with myself keeping them, knowing I can get a quality pair of shoes (that are built to last for more than 2 months) for a couple hundred bucks and essentially have a 25% discount if I return these Rockports. I would never buy another pair of Rockports. If you personally don't mind buying cheap disposable junk, at about 50 dollars this shoe might be for you. But you would be certifiably insane to spend even a penny more than what I did for these... or for ANY of their shoe models, if these Northfields represent their new standard for shoe manufacturing! ... show more

  • Rockport will not honor the warranty if purchased on Amazon.
Size: 11.5 Wide Color: Black
These wore out within 7 months. I had to replace the laces after a few months and the tread on the bottom has become completely smooth and a hole is wearing through. I contacted Rockport about their 1 year warranty, but they will only honor that for shoes purchased from the Rockport website.

  • Fake leather at the back of the shoe.
Size: 9 Wide Color: Black
I have been wearing Rockport shoes for many years. They are comfortable, waterproof, and dressy enough to wear to the office. This pair was the 3rd or 4th pair I have purchased. They still look nice and have plenty of tread, but the padded strip of leather at the back of each shoe is not leather at all, but a cheap thin piece of synthetic naugahyde. It has peeled off to expose the cloth padding. The materials and advertising states "leather upper." This is a lie. You can see from the photos I am attaching that this strip a the back of the shoe is not leather. I have never seen anything like this on my other Rockport shoes. This was apparently a cost cutting measure that has greatly reduced the life of the shoe. ... show more

  • They literally don't make 'em like they used to
Size: 12 Wide Color: Dark Brown
Check out the reviews on this product and you'll notice that while the average is high, the *recent* reviews are rather poor. Why? Rockport decided to increase their profit by drastically downgrading the quality of the shoe. The soles are no longer made of high quality materials, but are now made of cheap foam rubber designed to wear out in less than a year (and they do). Not only does this make them cheaper to manufacture, but it also means you'll have to replace them more often. Good for you, Rockport. The timing of the shoe going down hill and the purchase of Rockport by Adidas seems to somewhat coincide. In the absence of ability to improve their product or manufacturing processes, I guess the only way the Adidas MBAs can keep paying themselves mid-six-figures a year for doing nothing is by selling an increasingly inferior product and screwing their customers. This kind of BS is what passes for business innovation these days, and why corporate profits stay healthy despite a moribund economy as we keep getting less and less for our money, a "hidden inflation" nobody wants to talk about. The only people benefiting are the management class who orchestrate this charade. Sorry for the rant in the middle of a shoe review, but the reason these shoes now suck and some of the problems with our economy are one in the same. These shoes seem cheap, but it's a false economy we pay for on the second and third pair of shoes we need to buy to make these last as long as they used to. Rant aside, you'll do yourself a favor if you vote with your dollar to buy a shoe made by a company that has some respect for its customers. UPDATE: I'd hoped that maybe I could at least have the soles replaced, and "build" a decent shoe that way. Experiment failed. Everything on the shoe is made so cheaply that the whole thing is starting to wear out, even though the shoe is only a few months old! There is a tear in a seam in the upper, the laces are shot (ok, that could be fixed) and the treads are already almost entirely worn off. So, it's now official: I will never buy another pair of Rockports again. ... show more
