I am using this book for a class and it moves surprisingly fast in a good way. I already knew a lot of Swedish, but used only what was presented to write the assignments and found that the words were adequate to express myself. I also work through every exercise, which reinforces what is presented. I like that the book is all in Swedish because I can learn to understand instructions in Swedish. The goals for each chapter have helped me focus on specific learning outcomes, but you will need to supplement with other materials. On that topic, get the exercise book as well. Audio is available without a code, so don't worry about buying used so long as it is the second edition (as of this review). ... show more

Yes, the whole textbook is in swedish. But all that should mean to the motivated learner is more vocabulary! An absolute *essential* is the accompanying workbook Rivstart Övningsbok. Happy learning!

    • Difficult to access the audio files.
Couldn't figure out how to access the audiofiles. I took an online class at Folkuniversitetet, and i had trouble finishing the homework because there didn't seem to be a way to access the audiofiles on the website. The book itself was pretty good. I'm at roughly A2-B2 level, and had taken a German course before where the book was also designed for second language learners or any first-language background. It was easy enough to go through on my own or with the class. Unfortunately, the audio file accessibility from buying it on Amazon was too much of a problem and I had to drop the class despite help from the instructor. ... show more

    • Terrible book
I’m now in chapter 18 and still can’t talk about my body parts — but I’m supposed to read 3 sentences with new vocabulary words that I don’t know and somehow I’m supposed to sense a pattern about how the adjective for the noun is ending?! It’s ridiculous. They make you learn the word for nurse, which happens to be about the hardest word to say in Swedish, in the first chapter. I still don’t know basic words to express my opinion and why, or to even tell you generally about my hobbies, my body, my feelings, what I want to eat. All of the important grammar rules are written in Swedish (and so poorly at that) that there’s no comprehension of the material at all. There are no vocabulary lists at the beginning or end of each chapter, you just get to blunder through the text and reach for Google translate all the time. There are no answer keys for the workbook exercises. Which means I’m likely reinforcing the bad skills instead of the good ones by blindly filling in blanks with guesses that I can’t verify. You can only get the answer key if the teacher grants you access online. This book is a waste of paper and my time. ... show more

Book is useful if you're taking a class. Since there are no English explanations, it would be hard to use on your own. Audiofiles are very helpful.
