  • Built very cheaply
I found this drill press on Amazon for under $500, and after Amazon gave a refund for a shipping mixup, I have about $400 in it. I'm really glad I didn't pay the full price, because $400 is about all this thing is worth. The castings are very thin, and the column will actually "bounce" back and forth when bumped due to the thin base casting. I also had a bad motor on the unit I received, but Rikon did send a free replacement. I still feel a press this size would be better suited with a 1-1/2 hp motor, and may change it. Overall, I realize I didn't buy a Powermatic or Clausing, but this press has been cheapened up too much to be good for anything other than light-duty work. ... show more

  • DONT BOTHER
Not a quality product. Base is made from thin cast iron and was broken when arrived. I was the second person to receive this press and return it. Look for an older press made before the 70s like an old Delta or the likes. Lots of good restored ones out there, so don't bother with the Chinese made junk... ... show more

  • inferior machining
I purchased the RIKON drill press mainly because of the RIKON band saw I have. However the engineering and machining on the drill press is far inferior to the design and machining on the band saw. I am very disappointed with the drill press. The casting for the drill table is very thin and no finishing on the machining of the table top. The base is also thin and poorly machined. I have since constructed a table for the drill to be used primarily for woodworking. The belt changing is also somewhat cumbersome to change as compared to other drill presses. The table lowering and raising handle crank is of a somewhat odd angle so I replaced that by using a miter gear and attaching to the new table I constructed so I can raise and lower from the front. The light for the drill press is useless, it is a single bulb socket recessed up in the housing of the drill head, no way to point or aim it, it lights up nothing but the interior of the head housing. There were four holes drilled and tapped for the light lens but no lens. The hand spokes for lowering the drill quill are a bit long, they will not clear a fence if one is used on the table without alteration. There were no tools that came with the unit to swivel the table 90 degrees which requires a wrench for a large metric bolt that tightens down. ... show more
