  • Gorgeous handheld with deal breaking d-pad flaw.
Style: Grey
The media could not be loaded. RG351M Review So close to being the perfect handheld, but falls short of being an easy recommendation. Read on to find out why! (I've attached a video of the d-pad diagonal rocking issue mentioned below.) Wi-Fi! Aluminum! Oh man! I was really, really excited to get my hands on this handheld. I already have an RG350P and RG351P. There was no reason I needed another handheld, but the sexy aluminum body and the presence of built-in wi-fi sold me pretty easily. So, I'll address those two things first. First, the aluminum body. It's gorgeous - it really is. I was worried the "space gray" would be a little bit too much like raw aluminum and I (at first) regretted not getting the black model; that was, at least, until it arrived. The color is actually gorgeous. I don't know that I'd call it "space gray" myself - it looks like more of a gunmetal gray to me. It looks perfect. After handling it, I have zero regrets in that department. It's extremely weighty (which actually could be considered a con depending on how you're playing it) which really does give it a premium feel. Unless I'm mistaken, the side panels are plastic. This is required for wi-fi to get a proper signal. However, if they are, they're very well color matched to the aluminum and if someone told me they were 100% aluminum, I wouldn't really be surprised. These really are gorgeous units. Anbernic has done a great job. In fairness, there was a very tiny casting irregularity on the unit I received (completely unnoticeable unless you're looking for it), as well as a tiny ding on the top. But, I'm willing to overlook those small imperfections because of the overall quality. Speaking of wi-fi, it works just perfectly. I'm using ArkOS instead of the default firmware (installed to a new memory card since I've heard of issues with the built in ones) and have had zero issues with it. It connects quickly and maintains a good signal around the house. It's extremely nice being able to update cores and actual firmware updates at any time over-the-air is just luxurious. Goodbye, horrible wi-fi dongles. The screen is bright, detailed, colorful, and unfortunately not great for anything other than GBA games thanks to the wide aspect ratio. In a nutshell, GBA looks fantastic, while almost everything else is a compromise. I find I have to run shaders with most other emulators otherwise the artifacts bug me. YMMV. If you're not as picky as I am and am just looking to throw down some good retro gaming, you'll hardly notice. The controls are almost identical to those on the RG351P - which is to say mostly good. The buttons are fairly firm, but provide a very nice tactile feedback and generally are a pleasure to use. The d-pad is a little more firm than I'd like and I find that it does cause fatigue on longer gaming sessions. Still the trade-off of this is that it feels like it'll last a long while. Unfortunately, there is a major, glaring flaw with the d-pad. The d-pad does NOT like to be used for diagonal movement. Up, down, left, right are all flawless. But try to move diagonally and you have to press REALLY hard for it to register. My two other Anbernic consoles don't have this issue at all. Using the d-pad is completely unusable for any games that require diagonal movement. As an example, on Super Mario RPG (which is primarily done in the diagonal axes) it was basically unplayable unless I used the analog stick (which works fine but feels odd when you've been using a d-pad for decades.) Additionally, when I press directly on a diagonal axis, it makes a loud clicking sound - almost as if the d-pad is hitting metal. I assume they changed something in the rocker mechanism used in the 351P and that's the cause of trouble. Or, I could just have a bad build. Regardless, this flaw will probably cause me to return the unit, which breaks my heart. Otherwise, it is a fantastic unit. Plays most retro games well up to PS1. There are some outliers that it really struggles with (Super Mario RPG and Yoshi's Island as example) but for the most part everything plays great. No surprise given they're building off a known workhorse of a chip. Battery life is as good as can be expected and, of course, varies with what platform you're running. The analog sticks feel amazing (seriously did they take these from Nintendo?) and apart from my d-pad woes, I'd say this is a very solid system. (No pun intended.) If you can get by with using the analog stick in place of the d-pad for those games that require it, I'd say this is absolutely worth the upgrade from the 351P. Yes, all you're really getting feature-wise is wi-fi and a sleek metal frame, but for those with the cash that may be enough to push them over the edge. For me, unfortunately, I'm going to have to stick with the 351P and 350P since gameplay is paramount. ... show more

  • Use ArkOs, beware of QC from the factory, these sellers on amazon are all 3rd party resellers
Style: Grey
Works great for emulation up to around ps1 / DS. I used ArkOs instead of the stock firmware installed. I recommend replacing the included SD card with one from a reliable brand like SanDisk. Received 1 of 3 with a joystick defect.

  • Buy it

If you're looking at this you've probably already seen a lot of pro/con videos. The stock firmware is not good, the ROMs that come with it are hacked with cheats and crap quality, but the first thing you're going to do with this is flash ArkOS or 351elec and it'll be everything you're looking for.

  • SD card most be backed up
Style: Grey
The bad. I had an issue with the ssd card and had to copy the info off of it. I am not nocking stars for the sd card. Others said it was junk. Just didn’t think it would die on the first play. It also had an issue with the left stick. It was like it was stuck in the up position and was useless in game. The good. Replacing the sd card and install elec351 is image on it fixed everything. Just YouTube for it for a set of instructions. I am into the pre ps1 and Nintendo up to the n64. It plays everything I want but n64 games do struggle a bit. I have played nes games for up to 3 hours with no battery issues. N64 games make it about 2 hours before you get battery trouble. I will buy more of these. ... show more

  • Nearly perfect
Style: Grey
Other than a few minor issues, it's basically perfect. Functions as advertised, good battery life, feels good in the hands, etc. Most of the issues are firmware-related anyway, which isn't really the fault of Anbernic or the seller.

  • Expensive

I was actually hoping for better after reading reviews and watching videos. For this price, its not worth it to me. Many other products out there that perform the same yet half the cost. Yes its metal.. But that doesnt cut it for this price. My opinion

  • You will not be disappointed!
Style: Grey
The media could not be loaded. The rg351m is amazing. Sturdy as heck, and the ips display is very nice. This thing handles 80% of anything I throw at it from n64 or psp. Runs everything from ps1 perfectly. Its like a mini Playstation in your hands. I would definitely recommend upgrading the firmware to 351elec to avoid unnecessary "tweaking" to run the roms. ... show more
