  • Not worth the price
A decent sounding cart, but I’ve broken two in six months with regular use, so there must be some QC issues. Absolutely love my Planer 3, but I’ve upgraded the cart and will never look back. There are better carts for the money.

sounds good for the price creates a hum on my REGA RP-1 turntable, which I'm not happy about

  • Absolute rip-off.
This overpriced cartridge, like most things Rega, is absolutely mediocre and a huge rip-off. The cartridge is tuned so poorly and is such an obvious way that there actually is a consensus about it. It simply sounds dark. Read the "Press Reader Australian Hi-Fi Rega Planar 3 Review" (google it) and you will actually see measurements for this cartridge. There is a reason Rega gives as little specification information as possible! This cartridge has a dramatic drop in the frequency response starting at 1.5kHz. This is the most important region so you will hear it. It drops 3dB until about 5kHz, maintains a bit, then drops another 5dB past 10kHz. So much for full range sound! It sounds lifeless, with little "detail" because treble is tuned low. Female vocals will sound awful. If you own this or are more interested, google "Understanding the 8 Sound Signatures." It is a good article that discusses sound signature and importantly provides audio clips examples. If you own them and don't believe me, listen to the examples. You will be surprised. You are better off with any introductory Audio Technica cartridge. Even the $11 AT3600L is better! (Which means that the Rega Carbon is better than this--which is no surprise because they are the same thing. Rega stamps their name on it and charges you 4X the price!) The lesson is stick to the big name phono cartridge manufacturers. Cartridges made by turntable companies are scams. They just license cheap cartridges and charge ridiculous prices. Clearaudio is the same. They are just cheap Audio Technica cartridges with different plastic bodies. Just look at the specifications! ... show more

  • Buyer Beware- there are better alternatives
Not great and overpriced for the performance it provides the listener. I have this cartridge that came preinstalled on my Rega Planar 3 turntable. The electrical hum is awful as the tonearm traverses the record and nears the center spindle (closer to the motor). Rega’s USA distributor replaced it under warranty, assuring me this hum is not normal. The replacement does exactly the same thing. I then purchased a Nagaoka MP-150 costing about the same price here on Amazon and it BLOWS THE ELYS2 AWAY! The fidelity and bass is amazing and there’s no hum. I can not recommend the Rega Elys2 cartridge at all. ... show more

  • Elys2 is good for you
Entry level cartridge, depends on your setup: table, amp, phono stage, and speakers. If you got an entry level setup, Elys2 is good for you. If you are expecting an audiophile experience this cartridge will not provide that.

  • Vastly Underrated Cartridge
My Elys came as the standard cartridge on my Planar 3. I do not understand the bad reviews this cartridge has received. I see no reason to upgrade and it just gets better and better as it breaks in. It has the right combination of neutrality, warmth, and musicality. It is detailed without being analytical. Tracking is good if not outstanding. Maybe my good results are the result of using it with a Rega turntable and Rega Elex-R amp. You may get better performance for twice the price but I find this cartridge to be a real sleeper and a hidden gem in its price range. ... show more
