Description

A dying world, shattered by a broken machine A desperate flight, their only hope for refuge A robotic race, ally and destroyer alike The Republic of Exilium has grown in strength and confidence at the far end of the galaxy from the rest of mankind, sending out scout ships to survey the worlds around them as they try to learn more about the mysterious Construction Matrix AIs. Finding one of the genocidal rogues of that mysterious “race” in the process of destroying an inhabited world, Captain Octavio Catalan takes his ship into a desperate battle. He is victorious—but he is too late. The world of the strange aliens he has encountered is doomed. The distant Republic can barely help, but the honor of their leaders will not permit them to stand idly by. Ships and crews are set into motion to commence a desperate evacuation of their newfound friends, and debts with the strange Matrices are called in. One branch of Matrices destroyed the planet. Another may well save it—but the AIs have their own agenda and the price they ask may be beyond the Republic and its new allies… Read more

  • Thoroughly Enjoyable
Format: Kindle
I enjoyed the focus on the wider variations of species in the universe present in this book, and how varied they are. I enjoy stories of humanity uniting others to a common, worthy cause, and this book definitely covers a lot of my favorite parts of those tropes, with a fun helping of mystery mixed in as they work to uncover the many things they don't know. I also loved how by this story the exiles have moved on with their lives with a focus on their future, and yet the trials of their past are still very much a guiding light for those futures, in a very positive way. And yes. There are lots of space battles and marine battles in this book, too. ... show more

  • A great addition to the series.
Format: Kindle
Four and a half stars. A nice second installment in the series. There are many options for Stewart to explore in further books. There were some twists and turns that really moved the story along. I also liked the added perspective of new characters. It lost half a star for lack of development in the established characters and overly simplified aliens. It was still a fun read and a great addition to the series. ... show more

  • ARC reader and still bought it.
Format: Kindle
I did receive an advanced review copy of this book. And after reading the book, immediately preordered it. Would have paid more, too. If you haven't read the first book in the series, and the prequel novella, it would be best to start there. If you loved the first book, the saga gets even better. I love that Glynn always finds new ways to surprise me without compromising his character's integrity. One of my favorite things about all of Glynn's work is that his heroes and heroines are actually heroic. They aren't without flaw but they always try to be better. I also love the references Glynn makes to popular scifi shows...without detracting from his writing. As a Trekkie myself, it is like the cherry on top. **POSSIBLE SPOILERS** We get to be introduced to new aliens, and they are an interesting and well thought out race. We also learn more about the aliens from the first book. I'm trying to be vague because I don't actually want to spoil anything, but I think it's important to note that Mr. Stewart's imagination still seems to be performing well. A new hero is brought to the forefront as well. Isaac can't be everywhere, after all, that's not realistic. I particularly love AI stories so to see our new hero interact with the original aliens more is right up my alley. ... show more

  • Classic Glynn Stewart Space Opera
Format: Kindle
Another great read by Glynn Stewart with great character development and all of the imaginative plot twists that characterize his writing. The Exilium exiles need allies and they are not alone. The Rogue Matrices are at it again, forcibly terraforming occupied planets. Can the ESF defend a new alien race? Can the aliens be trusted? Existing storylines are continued from Exile as well as key new storylines added to advance the story, with a nice little twist at the end. I can’t wait for the next book. I received an ARC in exchange for my review. I enjoyed the book enough that I bought a copy. ... show more

  • Great and extremely entertaining series!
Format: Kindle
Congratulations to Glynn Stewart for another amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting author who not only write intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.

  • Overly Ambitious
Format: Kindle
This book, while good, really wasn't as good as it could have, indeed, should have, been. The story developed by leaps and bounds, but it seemed very forced, and the worldbuilding appeared to be extremely convenient and less than believable. Worse, it wasn't as interesting as the first book, with more time spent between a large cast that all seem a bit too similar, and forgettable dialogue. The newly introduced aliens were almost impossible for me to visualize in my head, which is something I found distracting, although they were very interesting otherwise. Overall, this book took a great premise and cast and largely squandered it. I found myself wishing that the book had maintained more focus, and I have a feeling that the author was in a hurry to pack in a great deal more than he could reasonably manage in the pages and time he had to work with. It needed a less ambitious plot or a much bigger book with more polish. ... show more

  • Of course it is good
Format: Kindle
This is the second book in the Exile series. Just when you think you know everything there is a twist. The science is good. Space battles and an effort to save a world. Robots that have turned on their makers. The one thing that surprises me is how fast the humans turn into a working group. We do know how to adapt. ... show more
