  • Pretty Impressive
I am a Russian and I gave up on Russian horror, until now. Russian movies were always good in the comedy, fantasy, sci fi genres, but horror movies were always very weird since the early 90s. Wth two exceptions. The title of the movie itself is a token reference to an awesome story by Russia's most popular poet, Alexander Pushkin, which also utilizes some supernatural elements and mentions the great alchemist Saint Germain. The narrative is simple enough, but realistic. As psychological as it is horrifying. The acting is usually consistent. There may have been a few hitches with the older children, but ironically, the younger kids I found to be more believble. The plot does resemble several other horror tropes. There is Bloody Mary, there is the Exorcist, Tooth Fairy, and some others. But it also has a marvelous originality, building up its own separate mythology. A few elements of Russian slang were not fully converted into American slang but the translation was decent throughout and easy to understand. I would have liked the sound to be a little bit louder, but am pleased with everything else. Including my inability to fully guess the ending. The special effects were good enough, no excessive CGIs, no repeating jump scares. I consider Queen of Spades to be the second strongest Russian horror movie, after the Night's Watch. ... show more

  • Public Service Announcement: This movie is only Subtitled. No English Dub
Again, no English dub, no watch. I'm not 100% opposed to watching movies subtitled. I can't tell you how many countless Anime I watched subbed back in the day due to the limitations and format constraints of the time (VHS was only able to offer one audio track). But once DVD's were introduced (then Blu-ray, streaming, et al), I find no excuse not to offer/create multiple language tracks in any territory studios provide movies in. I do not want to divert my eyes from the cinematography to read lines of dialog. And for those who don't mind this, and are so good at it that it doesn't take away from their movie watching experience, great for you. You can consider yourself better than me. I'll stick to my dubs, thank you. And for those who feel I'm missing out on some great films due to a limited viewpoint, take comfort. There are more movies out there than one can watch in a lifetime, other great movies, in English, or dubbed in English, and I'll spend my time watching those instead. I'm entitled to my own opinion and preferences, and I'll continue to support film studios who demonstrate care for my enjoyment, providing English dubs. Amazon needs to do a better job of labeling movies that only offer English subtitles with no dub. They do so on some, but not on others; why? One only has to read other similar reviews on countless movies on their site to see that this frustrates many of their customers, not just me. As for the movie, if they make an English dub, or offer one in the future, I'll watch it and adjust my rating. Until then, the one star is for Amazon's lack of clear labeling. ... show more

  • Surprisingly good time
There's always going to be a version of Bloody Mary in every culture and I feel like this movie did it well. It had a somber mood that carried you throughout and it didn't fully have the "and they lived happily ever after" ending like most horror movies did. I liked that. My only issue was the pacing of the movie and the fact that there were your stereotypical archetypes. The protagonist with the broken home, the heroic sacrifice, a slight romantic interest, etc. The use of animals in this was interesting and added to the theme. Pacing could have been much better; the movie started with a death of very little premise? I guess if Ringu could rock it, so can Queen on Spades :) ... show more

  • Horror movie from Russia - Queen of spades - Dark Rite
This is a pretty good Russian horror movie. It is very much in the style of Devil directed by John Erick Dowdl (story by M. Night Shyamalan). I don't know if they copied the style or not, but if you watch both movies - you'll understand what I mean. I thought it was worth mentioning. Another notable fact is quality. They spent good money to make this movie and it shows. Lighting, editing even the score are quite good. Acting is not Oscar quality by any stretch of imagination, but it is a lot better than many other horror flicks out there flooding streaming services. For these reasons - I recommend this movie. I've wasted time on a lot worse flicks, but this one is not bad - not really. Enjoy! ... show more

  • I'm being generous giving this 2 stars instead of 1.
Yes, it's visually atmospheric but the sound quality is hideous, mainly comes through the left channel; that's ridiculous. It's obviously based on a number of sources including the Susan Hill horror story The Woman in Black and various occult mythologies about mirrors being portals and a variety card games that are based on or consider the Queen of Spades as a negative card. This tradition goes back centuries. Tchaikovsky even composed an opera entitled" Pique Dame". Come to think of it, the Susan Hill story is probably based on this myth. The film also draws on the practice of EVP as a means of contacting the entity while hold hands in a seance like scene using a walkie talkie for the entity to speak through. They cover up the mirrors like in the movie "The Skeleton Key". There are any number of other high budget films you can watch that deal with the whole thing about mirrors. The whole mirror thing is also a cultural belief in a number of countries. They throw everything in but the kitchen sink. The basic storyline is not without merit but the sound quality is so bad, it's a real annoyance and unforgivable in this day and age. I could only sit through half the film. ... show more
