Description

The definitive biography of fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld, written by journalist and author William Middleton, who knew the designer in Paris. In February 2019, the world lost one of its most enduring cultural icons, Karl Lagerfeld, the creative director for the storied House of Chanel for thirty-five years. Larger than life, Lagerfeld was legendary not only for reinventing Chanel; and creating constant fashion excitement at Chloé, Fendi, and his eponymous brand; but also for his vivid personal style, including his signature uniform of dark sunglasses and a powdered white ponytail. And then there was his utter devotion to his cat, Choupette.Journalist and author William Middleton spent years working in Paris for Women’s Wear Daily, W, and Harper’s Bazaar. During his time in Paris, he interviewed and socialized with Lagerfeld, coming to see a side of the designer that he kept private from the world. In this deliciously entertaining book, Middleton takes us inside the most exclusive rooms in the fashion industry, behind the catwalk, and into a world of brilliantly talented artists, stylish socialites, and famous stars—some of the most elusive and unforgettable figures of fashion’s inner circle for the past four decades. • A Fascinating Life
William Middleton's well-written and researched biography surprised me. Not a particular fan of fashion or of Mr. Lagerfeld, I was drawn into this portrayal of a life so interesting, so varied, so full, that I was reluctant to put the book down. Lagerfeld was not only a fashion designer, he was a multitalented, polymath of a Renaissance man of deep learning and culture. He collected and read thousands of books, became involved in publishing them and was a collector par excellence. How he managed to cultivate a multitude of homes, furnishings, friends, interests, and travels while designing and presenting not one but four lines of couture twice a year is beyond understanding. Born and raised in Germany, he came to personify French culture although he never forgot his roots. His friendships and close professional and personal relations are detailed, including his great loves, one a man and one a cat. He spent over a million dollars a year on flowers he sent to friends with thoughtful notes. The people who knew him, famous or not, are interviewed and have interesting things to say. Karl himself makes many profound remarks worth remembering. In all, this is a book about not only a man who lived life to the fullest but a portrait of a time and place that is well worth looking back on. I've read many books and this is one of the most memorable. ... show more

  • Reads Like a Fantasy Novel
This story of Karl’s life is so delicious that it reads like a fantasy novel but the story is so fantastical, no one could make it up. It was lovely to learn about his mother’s scrapbooks, his letters to her and others, and all of the beautiful houses he built and designed. The sheer volume and variety of his simultaneous collections is an inspiration. Usually I rip through a good story. This was a great story and I savored every word. Paradise now is a beautifully written, well researched biography that gives a full picture of an incredibly talented human and a walk through the history of great fashion labels and the evolution of couture and ready to wear. I loved that it did not spare the thorny parts of Karl Lagerfeld's personality while giving a full picture of such a hardworking, creative, and talented human. I loved the quotes and stories from those who worked with and around him. It was wonderful to read how he carried on while ill and dying as he still had so much to give and seemed to want so much to keep living and creating. The story of trying to keep his death so private, saying so few farewells was so very poignant. ... show more

  • Cover Damaged
I returned my first one because the cover was severely damaged and the hard cover had dents. The second arrived shortly afterwards with significantly less damage but the cover still had small rips at the edges. The book itself is good though.

  • So much unrealized information.
This book is so comprehensive about Lagerfeld and the French fashion industry. Exceptionally interesting and a must read for aspiring designers.

  • An Intentional Life Well Lived
Karl Lagerfeld was an extraordinarily talented human being. He understood fashion design better than anyone else. He was extremely successful and very well loved. Emotionally, he had childhood demons that were not worked out - and they sometimes ruined relationships. His talent and capacity for living and creating was genius - and this book explores all facets of this person. If you like fashion, design and good taste, you will enjoy every word of this book. Karl had very definite opinions on every subject and his life was extremely well-lived - Excellent book. ... show more

  • The importance of a love of style and fashion
I have just started the book. It is amazing, incredible detail about Karl Lagerfeld's life. I cant wait to read more. He transformed Chanel, he was a fashion genous.

  • Fascinating, revealing, compelling and fun
William Middleton’s tour de force biography of one of the most influential and often misunderstood culture figures of recents decades is a revelation. As someone who is not particularly fashionable or interested in fashion, I approached the book with some reluctance only to learn that Karl Lagerfeld’s influence transcended clothes. He was a significant and formidable cultural force who simultaneously revered history but was completely of the moment. Written from a personal point of view by someone who spent a great deal of time with the subject, Middleton’s beautifully written homage reads more like a novel than a biography. Loved it! ... show more

  • Hard to get through
I wanted to like this book so much. While there is a lot of detailed information, it jumps around and mentions so many people, then boomerangs back to something after going on a tangent. I understand the author wanted to be detailed and you can tell so much research went into this book. But it’s a somewhat boring read about a very colorful subject. I found myself skipping over paragraphs. ... show more
