Description

An original YA novel based on the hit Netflix series, Outer Banks, written by New York Times bestselling author Alyssa Sheinmel, featuring JJ and John B in a brand-new, high-octane adventure It’s spring break in the Outer Banks, and the islands are swarming with rich tourists. The last thing JJ and John B want to do is spend their week watching Kooks in action, so they plan a fishing getaway to the notoriously dangerous Frying Pan Shoals—nicknamed “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for good reason. Turns out they aren’t the only adventure- seekers at sea. Soon after they set sail, the friends run into the captivating Savannah, who hitches a ride aboard the HMS Pogue when the weather worsens and her boyfriend leaves her stranded. As a violent storm sets in, the three realize the only place to safely ride out the squall is a creepy, abandoned hotel on the shoals’ lighthouse platform. Or is it abandoned? It doesn’t take long for the three teens to realize they may not be alone. . . . Further complicating the life-or-death adventure is a mounting attraction between JJ and the secretive Savannah—the closer JJ gets to her, the more he realizes he’s playing with fire. Even if they get out of the shoals alive, can a Pogue–Kook romance survive the high-stakes shores of the Outer Banks? Read more

  • Outer Banks: Lights Out
Outer Banks: Lights Out follows John B and JJ who are trying to escape the rich tourists who are on spring break in the Outer Banks. They decide to go on a fishing trip but things do not go as planned. They run into Savannah and her boyfriend who are tourists. Soon a major storm is on the way Savannah's boyfriend chicken's out leaving her with JJ and John B. They decide to ride out the storm in an abandoned lighthouse but soon they realize that they might not be alone. And things turn into a life or death situation and to top it all off JJ starts having feelings for Savannah. I LOVE the show Outer Banks ( it is actually one of the only shows I watch) so when I found out they made a book this was a must read for me. This book seemed like it could be a really good episode of the show. If you have never watched the show I do not think you would be a fan of this book. This book was written because of the show. So if you have not seen the show you would be missing a lot of character development. I will say one of the downsides of this book was Kiara and Pope were not in this book a lot, and I love them. I did like how this book brought in new characters ( who I do not think we will see on the show) and new adventures. Because I am a huge fan of the show I really loved this book and I highly suggest it to any fan of the show. Also, this book made me even more excited for the new season. All I have left to say is P4L ( if you know you know). ... show more

  • Would have worked better minus the Mary Sue, plus Pope and Kie
This book could have worked if not for two things: 1) Sidelining the already-developed characters of color; 2) the forced romance of JJ and Savannah, who only had cursory development and displayed many qualities of fanfiction’s dreaded Mary Sue. She may have been part Latina, but she wasn’t nearly as developed as Pope or Kiara. Also, the copy editor missed the spelling of Kie’s name, as it’s written “Ki” the whole time. If the whole thing had been just John B and JJ getting into trouble and thinking about fathers and family, it would have been much better. Those were the parts where the writing really shone, and where the author displayed a knowledge of the characters and insight into their internal conflicts and the struggles that show up in seasons one and two. I honestly only kept reading to see how that part was carried through. It was almost more frustrating to have such potential entwined with a really unsatisfying and unbelievable romance. The boys only felt in character when they weren’t talking or thinking about Savannah. I just did not buy JJ falling for her that hard, that quickly, when neither he nor the reader knew anything about her or had any reason to care about her yet. There was some cringe-worthy dialog (most of it JJs) and WAY too much tickling in high-stakes situations that destroyed the tension. Also, the first few chapters are fairly boring. Also, we don’t need to have the entire explanation of how to fix a flooded engine in-narrative. John B wouldn’t think about it in his head—he knows what’s happening. Classic case of “I suffered through this research, and now the reader will too”. I would have much rather read a story about all the Pogues, or just JB and JJ. ... show more
