  • great value for recreation
I’ve been a recreational x-country skier my entire life and have been meaning to try out snowshoeing, but wasn’t sure I’d like it enough to justify the expense of buying Tubbs or MSO snowshoes, and didn’t want to buy junk that could leave me stranded in the cold woods. I did an extensive comparison of these snowshoes with others on the market, and am convinced this is a great package at a great price, especially for beginners. The adjustable trekking poles, presumably aluminum with plastic grips, come with mud baskets and snow baskets, so they can be used for multiple sports. The carry case features both a shoulder strap and handles and seems to be of decent quality. The snowshoes are made with similar materials as many pricier snowshoes: “HPDE” (presumably a typo in their stats for HDPE, or heavy-duty polyethylene) decking riveted to aluminum frames. The front bindings come with two plastic ladder straps (think snowboards, Rollerblades) and plastic/metal ratchets that squeeze together while the heel binding consists of a cloth strap with a quick-release buckle. (After releasing my x-country ski bindings with a simple flick of the ski pole, unbuckling three straps is work!) At least I could tighten and release the straps with gloves on and the bindings will fit many different styles of boots; you don’t need special boots, just hiking or snow boots. While the specs state that the crampons/spikes are an aluminum alloy, which would be inferior to the steel found in better quality snowshoes, they are magnetic, which tells me they are, indeed, steel. The snowshoes are mid-range for weight, at 4 lb. 6 oz. per pair, and are unisex, although some women might be better off with the narrower frames made just for their bodies. As these are 25” long, some lightweight and/or shorter people might find them too big. Look for charts online for your best fit—as well as ideal pole lengths. These are best for recreational snowshoeing on flat or gently rolling ground and do not have angled crampons for going up and down mountains or long side rails for lateral traction, such as walking sideways across a hill. While they come with heel lifts for greater ease in going uphill, I will test those when I get more experience! Living in the Snowbelt, I was able to test the snowshoes this week and was pleased with how easy it is! They are a little noisy, though, which detracted from the otherwise quiet landscape, but they got me where I wanted to go and back again without any issues. A little warning: make sure you tighten the poles well so that they don’t telescope when you put pressure on them. To be honest, after using non-adjustable poles for x-country skiing, I’m wondering why adjustable ones are the norm for snowshoeing? I mean, one size is good enough to go up and down hills on skis! If it mostly comes down to the convenience of being able to pack them into the carrying case, I, personally, would trade that convenience for poles that can’t collapse! Finally, despite giving this package 5 stars, I am wondering if I should invest in the company’s 12-month extended warranty. Will I get the same longevity as pricier components? Will those plastic ratchets and grips last a long time? Is there some quality issue that I’m overlooking? I guess only time will tell! ... show more

  • Good beginner shoe set for occasional usage
We might only use these a few times each year but they appear like a great option for hiking through deep snow on the mountain. It comes in a case that holds the shoes, poles, and tips together. The ratchet straps for the boots seem functional (like snowboard bindings) but I wonder how they'll hold up to repeated use if these were used regularly. The bindings in the back of the boot are a clip-in strap and not a ratchet strap. I'm not sure whether that's going to be more or less cumbersome that a ratchet but it may not make much of a material difference. For occasional use, I'm sure they'll be fine. But if you're looking for something that's going to be used daily or multiple times per week for the whole season, there's a chance the bindings might be the first thing to go over time. I don't think it's fair to compare the case and shoes to sets costing hundreds of dollars more as they're not really in the same class. But for light use the time or two a year we would want to use them, I think these are a good choice at this price point. It will get you in the door and give you some experience to see if you like trudging through the snow or not. And I don't see any reason the trekking poles couldn't be used throughout the year for regular hiking even if the shoes aren't being utilized. There are different tips provided that just screw on and off so you could adjust them as needed for the conditions (ice, snow, dirt, etc). ... show more

  • Love that they include trekking poles!
I was so impressed when I pulled these snowshoes out of the box! I could not believe the quality of them, not to mention the really cool royal blue color. These snowshoes are very light and made extremely well. They actually feel really good to walk in, and you feel secure in the ice and snow. The craftsmanship went way beyond what I was expecting. The strong aluminum frame is made out of the highest grade aircraft aluminum. They have a heel-lift design as well as a fast ratchet buckle system, which makes it really fast for you to adjust your feet correctly in these snowshoes. The crampons have a sawtooth design and grip very well in ice and snow. They have a nonslip mat where you feet are, and heavy duty PE decking. I ordered the 25" size, and found it is very easy to walk in them. These snowshoes come with a full-floatation pivot system, which reduces fatigue and stress and gives great traction. They come with a set of trekking poles to help keep your balance, which are very nice. Along with the poles they included a beautiful bag that has a detachable shoulder strap, as well as having two carry handles as a nice added bonus. I highly recommend them. ... show more

  • Great pair of snowshoes!
I love these snowshoes. To be honest, I've never snowshoed before, so I don't know how these stack up to a more expensive set, but these are great! As a complete novice, I found them easy to put on and adjust. They are super light and once they are fitted properly, they are almost unnoticeable. The trekking poles are also quite nice, though low end. They do a great job of helping stabilize you in deep snow and the whole set looks great! I'm considering getting another pair for my wife. ... show more
