  • I Was Waiting for These to Come in All Black!
Size: 10.5 Color: Black/Castlerock/Phantom
I’m required to wear black boots for work and was disappointed that these didn’t come in all black since I have a blue/orange pair that have been my favorite off-duty shoes for over a year. So I jumped on these when I saw them finally available in all black. They’re true to size and the overall design looks great on my foot. They’re super comfortable and my feet don’t get wet walking through snow or in the rain. These were less expensive than the blue or brown ones out there. I love the way they feel on my feet when they grip the concrete, and they also hold up well in light mud and wet grass. The only negatives are that the laces tend to loosen up by the end of the day, and I wish there was a bit more padding in the uppers to make them feel extra luxurious. Otherwise, these shoes are high quality, light-weight and durable. They’re great for jobs that don’t require heavy duty boots, but where you need a shoe that can hold up to the elements and feel comfortable on your feet all day. They’re better than the Thorogood Crosstrex or Merrel Moab boots in design, durability, comfort, repelling water, etc. and highly recommend them. ... show more

  • GREAT SHOE. Stability with floating fleet.
Size: 8.5 Wide Color: Natural Indigo/Eclipse/Jade
Took a couple of tries to get the size right. Of course this is a sure thing with Amazon's simple returns. The regular width is actually very narrow, and the wide is just right. Even New Balance says go big on their web site. I use my favorite aetrex sport orthotics to give me a good arch support. I think New Balance wanted a base shoe that could be modified for those people who want it tight, or comfortable, no arch or with arch etc. Once you get it set up for how you like it, then it is a superb shoe, whether running, hiking or walking. The gore tex works great in a wet meadow sopping with morning dew. The heel stability is amazing and makes going over uneven bumpy ground a breeze, with major support and ankle protection. On flat ground whether outside or inside they are a joy. Every step like floating on air, with lots of protection against twisting. I love them and wear them all day every other day, rotating with my New Balance 847's. ... show more

  • Great Hiking Shoe for Mixed Terrain – But Watch the Tongue!
The New Balance Fresh Foam X Hierro Mid is an excellent hiking shoe—comfortable, durable, and perfect for switching between terrains, including water. The grip is solid, and the cushioning makes long hikes much more enjoyable. Whether you’re on rocky trails, muddy paths, or shallow streams, these shoes hold up really well. The only downside is the tongue can be irritating if you’re not wearing long socks. It tends to rub against the skin, which can get uncomfortable over time. But as long as you pair them with the right socks, they’re a fantastic choice for outdoor adventures. Highly recommend for hikers looking for comfort, durability, and versatility! ... show more

  • Comfortable and weather-resistant sneaker boot
Size: 11 X-Wide Color: Black/Castlerock/Phantom
I've purchased several previous pairs of New Balance Hierros, but for my job I needed black, so these are perfect. Some of the reviewers note that toe-piece seams fail over time. I haven't had a catastrophic failure like the ones cited in the reviews, but I've definitely noticed that the toe-piece stitching is the weak point on these shoes. The laces they provide with the Hierro have improved, but more substantial lacing hooks would be desirable as the laces can loosen and jump the hooks during heavy activity. Otherwise, these are super sneaker boots, and I wear them every day. They are extremely comfortable, and reasonably weather-resistant. I'd say the durability is pretty good, considering that these are basically a glorified sneaker. I would like to see them in other subdued color schemes suitable for law enforcement, like olive drab or coyote. ... show more

  • Great hiking boot
Size: 15 Wide Color: Dark Mushroom/Black Coffee/Neo Flame
I’ve worn em up mountains and also walking around downtown. Comfy, stylish, and I haven’t been able to break them yet. Offers good support for the foot and keeps good traction on loose angled terrain. Size is typical for NB shoes, true to the number. Color is nice, understated. It does the job and looks good free taking a beating. ... show more

  • Not waterproof
Size: 17 Wide Color: Dark Mushroom/Black Coffee/Neo Flame
I would really like a breathable, waterproof hiking shoe but these are not. They are the most water RESISTANT shoes I have purchased on Amazon & certainly worth $50 but not $120. I have goretex outer wear that is impervious to water so it is hard to understand why these were not the same. I did not even test them in rain, standing water, puddles, creeks or streams; only in 4-6 in long grass after a steady rain. Water only seeped in slightly at the toe but if more water, rain or foliage was present it would be worse. On a positive note the shoes are very comfortable. The laces require double tying - irritating. The eyelets in the shoe are not reinforced so the hole is deforming. Other lace “cleats” are a fabric that may be coming loose at the stitching. The top 2 cleats are metal & are fine. There is a “lip” at the bottom rear heal that almost looks like mold forming excess that should have been trimmed. It may serve as a toe pry point to ease remove of shoe. However it collects dirt & sometimes catches on brush. Hope this aids your decision tree. ... show more

  • Very impressed ... at least for the first week of use.
Size: 11.5 Wide Color: Black/Castlerock/Phantom
As a regular New Balance customer I thought I'd give these a try. There are probably better trail shoes out there in the $200+ range but at the price I couldn't resist. I usually buy 11.5 wide for NB sneakers and this one was true to the usual fit. I'm somewhere between a regular 11 and an 11.5 wide but buying the wide allows room to put an extra arch support insert in the shoe and my toes are not pinched. Very lightweight as advertised. Easy to put on and take off. While you're not going to get the fresh foam super cushy feeling of the Fresh Foam X More v4 (which I also wear) you will get a nice cushy lightweight comfortable feel. I wore them around outside and on two short hikes (around 3 miles) on local established hiking trails. Gortex outer material appears and feels rugged. No complaints. As I like to say in all my product reviews I did purchase and use the product for its intended use. To quote an online review from a buyer's guide which is accurate (sic) New Balance found a sweet spot with the Fresh Foam X Hierro Mid GTX as it's more than just a high-collared running shoe but less than an overbuilt trekking boot. ... show more
