  • The Gestalt watch - the sum of the whole is greater than the parts
First time Apple watch purchaser here. I tried other cheap(er) watches and kept returning them - no bang-for-the-buck. This is pricey, no doubt about it. Grudgingly coughing up $425 and comforting myself with Amazon's platinum return policy, I decided to give it a go. I'm awfully glad I did. So here's the thing: there's no killer app for me. Truly. No one thing that goes A-HA and makes me love it..... ......BUT, there are tons of little things that, together, are more important than each one individually. - Blood pressure monitor - PulsOx monitor - Walkie-talkie function. I thought this would be a gimmick but it's so damn helpful when I'm trying to remember if I need to pick up eggs at the grocery store - Checking texts without having to pick my phone up each time - Checking Telegram, ditto - Pings from Life360 (an app I pay for) telling me when my family members have arrived/left somewhere so I know if I need to get moving so I can pick them up - A watchface with my next appointment prominently displayed along the bottom - An exercise "ring" sort of thing that eggs me on to: stand up for a minute or two once an hour; exercise at least 45 minutes a day; get in at least 10K steps a day. Again, sounds gimmicky, hell it is gimmicky.... but isn't the old saw that if it's stupid but it works, it ain't stupid? - Tile tracking of my phone and wallet. Push a button and hey, that's where I left my phone - Stronglifts integration so when I'm at the gym I don't have to keep staring at my phone to know when to start my next set. It has haptics. My wrist buzzes, time to stop writing that email and get to work - Haptics in general, which is a much nicer way to wake up in the morning vs. the BLAM BLAM BLAM of the alarm clock. It buzzes your wrist in increasing intensity until you wake up. Seriously a nice way to rise and shine. - Sleep behavior analysis. Tells me if my sleep is getting interrupted, the levels of deep sleep, etc. Not sure if it's even all that overly actionable but it's nice to see and it does sort of course-correct me if I'm only giving myself 4-6 hours of sleep vs. the 7-8 I need - EKG. Yes, you can actually take EKGs of your heart to see if there's irregular rhythms - Fall detection. Hopefully I'll never need it but if you fall and don't turn it off, it calls 911. Nice feature for older folks. - NFC. Instead of bringing my wallet, I have my watch. Touch and go. I haven't tried this yet of all the features so this one may not be ready for prime time, but looking forward to giving it a go. - Set a remote time for my phone camera so I can get in the picture! - Calls on my watch. Never thought I'd use it but I can now live out my fantasies of living in a Jetsons world. Quality is great and it's especially useful when on a conference call when you don't need to speak much. - News flash items. I get critical news from Wall Street Journal, NY Times and Washington Post that I can scroll through - Siri on command. My sole critique is here - you're supposed to be able to "raise to talk to Siri" but it doesn't work well at all. You have to push the little button on the side. Pretty mild criticism, but still on balance it's great because I can say "how's the weather?" or ask a question and boom, instant results TL;DR There's a ton of stuff, each of which is mostly on the "That's nice but not overwhelming" end of the scale that together makes for a great device. I'm happy with it even at the eye-watering price. And like all Apple devices, if it's too pricey for you, wait a year and you'll get it substantially cheaper. ... show more

  • Worth every penny! Long review because I love it so much.
This is the first Apple Watch I’ve ever gotten. I always thought they were silly or a waste of money or just for fashion. I was wrong, and probably only thought that because I couldn’t afford one at those times and I was just being petty. I wanted something to motivate me to stay on track with my fitness plan, so I thought “if I spend $400 on this, I have to keep going! If I don’t, then I wasted $400!” That’s not even a thought now because this thing is so useful. It motivates me to keep going to the gym especially because of the insights. It’s exciting and I love that even if I can’t see progress *during* a workout, the big picture becomes tangible by seeing how many calories I burned, how long I went, my heart rate, etc. Whenever my workout is being tracked, so are my calories burned, my heart rate, and my blood oxygen. It comes with Fitness+ for 3 months. I like Fitness+ a lot! I’m not usually fond of at home fitness videos, but the trainers on there have great energy and make you smile even if you’re alone. The blood o2 is accurate- I have an oximeter and compared them; they’re dead on with each other. The heart rate and ECG feature is great. My mother’s side of the family has history with heart issues (hole in my mom’s heart as a kid, same thing with a younger cousin- both have had surgeries multiple times). I like to make sure the ticker is working fine, and I have a little bit of heart health anxiety because of it. (I’m healthy, my heart rate is only high because I’m hungover and just had Dunkin Donuts breakfast and coffee for the remedy lol). I also work from home now and it’s easy to get distracted on bad days. It’s great to simply tell my wrist, “remind me to do this thing in 15 minutes”. I also have my whole work to-do list on my calendar 9am-5pm M-F so it can show the current task on my watch. I’ve never even used the calendar app til now and it’s helped me so much with my time-management. I struggle with executive functioning, but this has improved my overall productivity inside and outside of work. I’m completing all tasks more efficiently, I’m doing chores more often, I’m working out, I’m not forgetting to run an errand, I’m making time for my hobbies, my loved ones... it’s only been a few days and I can tell this is going to be life changing for me. Oh, and it’s super cute!!! The gold is definitely rose gold*... and I love it. But beware if you think you’re getting gold! ... show more

  • Outstanding smart watch and fitness monitor/motivator
I resisted getting an Apple Watch for a long time, but am glad I finally succumbed to temptation. The fitness monitoring functions are fantastic: I find the gamification of fitness goals to be highly effective at getting me off the couch and onto my bike each day. The battery life is excellent. After reading so many reviews whinging about how long it takes to charge and how quickly the battery drains, I am pleasantly surprised that I can use mine all day long, wear it overnight for sleep monitoring, and wake up the next morning with it still having 30% charge left. Given all the thing we expect the watch -- and its tiny battery -- to do, I think that is remarkably good. Recharging is painless -- the magnetic charging puck is fantastic -- and fast. Mine will go from under 20% to full charge in far less than an hour, even using an old (ie not the latest / fastest) wall adapter plug. I love being able to take a phone call from my watch, or to pay for items with Apple Pay without having to take out my phone. The heart rate, ECG and blood-oxygen monitoring features are wonderful tools to have at your disposal. The most life-changing for me, though, has been the activity monitoring: closing my activity rings every day is helping me to be more fitness-focused, which in turn has led to better overall quality of life. ... show more
