  • On the Conceptual artist Sanja Iveković
"I have found that aesthetics are inseparable from politics." With this simple, but powerful observation, the feminist artist Sanja Iveković has risen over these past thirty years to stand as a role model for multiple generations of women artists. Here the prolific art historian, critic and curator Ruth Noack offers a gem of a book, assessing a single performance work by Iveković, Triangle (Trokut, 1979), the circumstances of its making, its transformation into an installation work, and its canonisation in more recent years. Much more than this, however, she beautifully contextualises the work, taking us back through Iveković's Zagreb in the 1970s. She quotes the critic Ana Janevski in saying, "Yugoslavia was particularly interesting as a cultural space in which parts of the communist political and cultural elite recognised correspondences between the universalism of modernist art and the universalism of socialist emancipation." A feminist analysis of power, yes, but equally a warm and engaging examination of the birth, growth and evolution of one woman's singular manner of expression. Early on Noack makes an assessment of Triangle as it was seen then, that applies just as readily to her own achievement now: "...the work could serve as a vehicle of translation between past and present and East and West, at a time when many had lost the means to make sense of a globalised but fragmented world. It told a story that we wanted (and needed) to hear." ... show more
