Description

Fanny Kelly’s memoir, first published in 1872, is an intelligent and thoughtful narrative. Kelly spent five months as a prisoner of Ogalalla Sioux in 1864 when she was nineteen years old. A woman of her time, there was no reason she should feel sympathy toward her captors, but the introduction points out examples of expressed favor toward the Sioux, however unconscious. This narrative is a valuable part of literature not only for its historical importance but its depiction of the conflicting images of Native Americans in the nineteenth century: savage aggressors or victims of prejudice and oppression. • Truthful and telling a great story.
Format: Paperback
While the author is not the world’s greatest writer, her story is still worth reading. Yes, in so many ways the story is told like she was writing a letter to a friend, but, regardless, she still tells some fascinating tidbits of those times when the pioneers and the Native People were intersecting — and not successfully. We wish she had elaborated more about the culture, but that kind of writing was not often done in the 1800s. What was also shocking 150+ years later to us modern day readers was how time after time the native Indians were betrayed by the white settlers whose arrogance was quite pronounced. (It makes Custer’s arrogant attitude all the more understandable? Yes, the story is worth reading, and in some odd way months later it continues to haunt. ... show more

  • Tremendous Book
Fanny Kelly does a great job of recounting her experiences when captured by the Indians. She boldly tells of the disruption of her family and murder of some of her children. It is encouraging to read of how her Christian faith helped her through the ordeal. One thing of note, she puts an end to the "noble savage" nonsense when she attacks foolish ideas of those who tended to downplay the savagery of pagan barbarian cultures. ... show more

  • Disappointing
Format: Paperback
Didn’t like the ending, but I guess that’s what happens with stories that are based on a true story. I should quit reading these types of books. How would you like it if several hundred years from now someone wrote your story but didn’t really completely know what you were thinking or doing?

  • totally fascinating
Format: Paperback
I love history and learning about Americans (i.e. native Americans) who were here first. I would love to know why they wanted this woman in particular so badly when they killed so many others. Was it her inner strength that they felt and/or reacted to. Why did they constantly threaten her with death but ultimately did not and why was she held captive for only 5 months? She wasn't rescued by whites, she was brought to them by her captors. Yes, they wanted to use her as a decoy to attack the white man's fort but what made her so special to the whites that they sent out party after party to find her. Unfortunately you don't really get an understanding of these questions. ... show more

  • Very good
Format: Paperback
The best account of a captive I have read so far. It took some time to get used to the writing style, old-fashioned, as one can expect.

  • This Is True To Life
Format: Kindle
I chose this book because I wanted to read about the real life of pioneer women. What this woman went through is unbelievable...but, true. I think that this is why I liked reading it so much. I don't think that I would have lasted through all of her torturous captivity. I have told so many people about this book. You find yourself just praying for her to get rescued! ... show more
