The liquids inside the mug do have to be very hot for the gradient to register through the mug, but honestly, rinsing the outside with warm/hot water works too in uncovering the gradient. The mug size is not too small and holds a good amount of liquids for morning coffee and other hot drinks; the handle is comfortable to grasp too.
