Description

The feature subtitled "The Empty Battlefield" is comprised of recut episodes of Gundam Seed (2002), with some bits of new animation--a practice that goes back to the original Gundam series (1979) and the first three features. This film includes material from the first 20 Seed episodes, or about one-third of the series. In the year 71 of the Cosmic Era (rather than the "Gundam Saga" timeframe or the "Alternate Universe"), Kira Yamoto accidentally becomes a mecha pilot when he stumbles onto the top secret Strike Gundam during an attack on his home satellite-colony, Heliopolis. Although the war is technically between the Earth Alliance and ZAFT, it's really a conflict between the human "Naturals" and the genetically enhanced "Coordinators." The movie and the broadcast series offer the ingredients of a classic Gundam saga: a reluctant warrior, a masked enemy general, and an old friend who tests the hero's loyalty. Cutting the running time so substantially moves the action along a breakneck pace, but leaves little time for character development. Director Mitsuo Kukada uses CG to choreograph some very snazzy mecha battles, in space, within Heliopolis, and on Earth, often with a fine disregard for the laws of physics. • Blu-Ray tops the DVD format
I've been waiting years for this to finally come out, and I was not disappointed. This is the cleanest format I've seen the series in, and it feels like watching the original without any loss on video or audio quality! Pros: Simple and straight-forward menu, not clunky or confusing to navigate. Superb and clean English and Japanese audio. (English is the same version released on television in the US in the 2000's) 2-disc format is much better than the 4-disc format from a few years back. Cons: Region 1 locked. I couldn't play it on my PC as most Blu-Ray have worked for me. Subtitle font could have been a little better, but not a deal breaker by any means. *Edit*: Episode 14.5 (15 in JP) "Cucuruz Doan's Island" is still missing, likely due to the North America release cut of this episode. This episode is pretty much impossible to find, but doesn't cut that much from the overall storyline. I've pre-ordered Part 2, and can't wait for it to arrive. I own the older "Anime Legends" release on DVD, and the quality is amazing compared to the older format. ... show more

  • This is probably the best way to rewatch the original series on modern hardware
I bought both set one set too, and they’re really really good. My only issue was that the second set had to be returned because it’s supposed to contain disc three and disc four, but it had two copies of disk 3. I have returned it and I’m purchasing another one so hopefully I don’t have that happen again, I really wanna finish the series so I can watch the later things. 😅 ... show more

  • The Grandfather of Mecha Anime
I just recently my blu-rays and can not express how well the transfers came out, no fuzz, blurs or scratches. This is only 1 of the few anime shows I have watch when I was a kid back in the 70's - 80's and brings back all the memories of this show, good and bad, I would not trade it off for anything. This was the show along with Macross / Robotec that changed afternoon and Saturday cartoon shows forever. Don't expext any CGI, or any state of the art animation, these shows were all done in cell painted animation, in other words, hand draw animation. This is the show that started the Mechaniation of Animation! The Grandfather of all Robo anime. The show holds all of it enduring chacteristics of building people thru out the show and how war has changed them. Now if only Star Blazers were out on Blu-ray, then I can be happy. ... show more

  • The series that started it all
Before Wing, Seed, and G Gundam there was mobile suit Gundam that started it all and It came in good condition it's a great series to get if your a fan of Gundam buy it or if your new to the Gundam franchise this is a good chance to get the first Gundam series. I'm Glad to see a Gundam series to be on blu ray in the United States it kinda hard to get Gundam on DVD these days. if your looking for a anime I recommend this even though it was made in the late 70's it still good the Gundam series that started it all. Can't wait until collection 2 comes on this December so enjoy this series and please note that this was made in the late 70's and it was dub in the late 90's early 2000's but I still recommend you buying this and see how the Gundam franchise started. ... show more

  • The original Gundam...
In terms of picture quality and audio, I was really happy with this. However, as far story and music goes, the original Gundam is kind of awful! The main character, Amuro is a whiny teenager who compared to other series Gundam pilots is terrible. He complains more than Kira Yamato, at one point he wasn't just a deserter, he stole the Gundam. And he's cold as ice to his supposedly close friend, Fraw. Little children are allowed to run around the bridge of the ship like it's a playground. Characters die and really it's hard to care because you didn't know them, and they really didn't matter either. In most cases, I found Zeon characters to be more interesting than the Federation characters. That all being said, this is where Gundam started, so I'm grateful for this original series, and it's the only reason I'm giving it 4 stars and not 2 or 3. For this era though, the original Macross series is a lot better. ... show more

  • Excellent
Excellent show! I remember watching this as a kid, and it's so nice to watch it again. The packaging is cool, the art work is very nice. The dvd case is the same size as a normal dvd, not a thicker case. The art on the dvds themselves are neat as well. As far as the content, it's pretty bareboned. Basically only play all, scene selection, setup, and extras. Not many extras to speak of. Also, their is no music during the menus. It's just completely silent, which I thought was odd. Couldn't they have just put the gundam theme in? Overall, excellent product. Good price for a good show. It's always nice to watch some gundam on the couch before bed :-) ... show more

  • Why is collection 2 of this awesome series not available on Amazon?
Always wanted this original series for my collection of gundam series I already own. Shame I have to mix the dvd sets with the new Blu-ray sets. Really can’t afford to rebuy everything on Blu-ray. Years ago I was only able to get the three movie set English dubbed. Back then I knew I was missing a lot , so I looked for the series and couldn’t find it. However once I did it was always way too expensive. When anime started to drop in prices I was able to get much of the other series’ that were available. But now anime prices are jumping back up to crazy amounts again and forcing people to greatly slim down their choices and purchases. Even forcing people to forgo owning what they like and planting themselves on online sites to watch them. (As long as the site keeps the series the people want to watch whenever). So I’m closing, I love that I can finally get a copy of the series to own but,.......where is the second half of the collection? It seems to be nowhere in Amazon. And of course I talking bout the Blu-ray English dubbed version like this first collection. ... show more
