  • Need to set up properly then works quite well
Style: Bench Drill 710W
The overall cosmetic quality of the construction is very good. Its design is similar to a heavy-duty hand drill mounted to a vertical column. I clearly use an internal reduction gear set that is responsible for the sound the unit makes. I really only needed it for one job and the price was low enough that it was less than if I took the job to a machine shop. I used the drill press to drill through 1" aluminum square tube stock with 1/4 inch thick walls. The key is to lubricate the tracks the head rides vertically on with a little WD40 and adjust and lock the 3 track tensioning screws before using it. Otherwise, the head will drift when drilling. I also used a high-quality BOSCH 5/16" drill bit that retained sharpness and did a good job of chip ejection. This minimized the amount of torque the press needed to produce to cut the aluminum. If the above is done the head does not drift during drilling and at the highest speed, the motor does not sound labored when drilling. The full travel of the head by pulling the plunge lever was just enough to handle the plunge required to drill all the way through the 1" tube stock and not much more. The drill press fully met my performance expectations. I also ran a vacuum by the drill bit while drilling which significantly reduced the mess from the aluminum shards the drilling process produced during operation. The unit is somewhat loud at the highest speed a volume somewhat equal to the noise the vacuum cleaner made during the process. ... show more

  • Met the need
Style: Bench Drill 710W
I got this drill press after trying a small, high rpm hobby drill press (no power, wrecks bits), as well as 30 lb bench drill press (wobbled). Specifically, I got it to drill out brass rivets on small Swiss Army Knives. The flat rivet head is about 2.5 mm in diameter, so a precision machine, without play or wobble, is needed. This press did the job. The operating handle is heavily spring loaded which detracts from the otherwise precision impression. This is a real drill, geared, and showed zero rpm drop under (the admittedly small) load. The speed control works fine. One reviewer wrote that they only got 1500 rpm. I found the rpm perfectly adequate. I know this because at the maximum speed it’s screaming like a banshee. The unit is marked 110 volt, 50 hertz 710 watts. This is not a perfect alignment with our US 120 volt, 60 hertz system, but in my usage, it worked fine. The press had no play at the chuck. The slide is adjustable but had no play when received. It appears the adjustability is via Allen screws and a bronze slider. The sound of the press is tolerable. It’s like a precise sounding whine (no doubt the gearbox) increasing with rpm. I’m living in a mobile home now, but I would have used it with caution when I was in the apartment. Low rpm, nonferrous metals, should be no problem. Screaming away on a quarter inch thick piece of steel may be a problem. So, for the price, it works very well. Why get a hobby low power, high rpm press when this press can handle the precision work and at the same time deal with heavier jobs? ... show more

  • Great tool for the DIY guitar builder.
Style: Bench Drill 710W
Bought this with amassed points, so it was a bargain. It was a replacement for one of those el cheapo drill press stands for a corded hand drill; except that none of the decent hand drills fit the 43mm drill clamp. (Subsequently returned via Whole Foods.) This MINIQ Bench Drill Stand uses its own drill motor, with a chuck that accepts bits up to 13 mm (>0.5"). Works as it should and is perfect for drilling neck mounting holes in Fender clone bodies that do not have them. Easy to set up and use. Wish I had ordered it in the first place! ... show more

  • Works good
Style: Bench Drill 710W
Nice little drill press for light work. Very nice finish on all the parts. It is fairly loud, and the handle takes a fair amount of force to operate, but is actually worth the price.

  • OK value ... but only 1500 RPM on 110V
Style: Bench Drill 710W
UPDATE 10 Aug 2020: I broke down and purchased a UMI Step UP 110 to 220 Voltage Converter (1200 watt). This drill runs extremely well on the correct 220 AC voltage. It is quite a bit noisier as well (I suspect the gears may need some lube). The no load max speed power draw is less than 300 watts (watts are the same at 110 or 200 volts AC). Minimum is about 150 watts. The highest draw I could get was a bit over 410 watts (by attempting to hold the chuck at maximum speed --- which I could NOT do). The additional requirement for the Voltage Converter doubles both the cost and weight of this tool reducing its perceived value greatly. ===== What you have here is is a low cost gear reduction 1/2 drill motor on a stand. I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be less noisy than I expected. I was extremely disappointed with the speed control. Of the "six ranges" only the last two are useful as the motor does not spin up in any of the lower 4 ranges. The last range is also a "bypass" of the speed controller. That is the reason for the loss of one star in this review. My Tachometer only showed a maximum speed of 1,500 RPM. That is the reason for the loss of another star in this review. The manufacturer should have spent a bit more effort in correctly specifying the motor and speed controller. The should have at least noticed when the speed did not come up to specification. As supplied the motor requires something like a "UMI Step UP 110 to 220 Voltage Converter" to operate properly with US standard AC current. Note: The mains lead has a "220VAC Type A plug" which just happens to fit into a US 110VAC socket. What is in the box: The drill assembly, base, chuck key, spare brushes, a 5mm hex key for the column clamp, a 4mm hex key for the column base screws and a 3mm hex key for the gib adjustment screws. The latter is useless without a 7mm spanner for the locknuts. So they might as well left that one out. Now where are those brushes when one needs them five years down the road (I do not really expect the motor to last that long)??? I wrapped mine in a plastic bag and taped them into a recess in the base. The value in this tool comes from the compactness and light weight (approximately 12 pounds) for a bench drill with a 8 inch deep throat. The stand appears to be solid and well built and about 1/2 the value of the unit. I also detected no vibration or wobble in the spindel. That is likely to change. Although the spindle does have a single ball bearing the upper end is only supported by a bushing for the large reduction gear. At first blush it seems a fair match for my Taig Micro Lathe. The question of longevity can only be addressed in the future. ... show more
