They're very comfortable and easy to put on, which I like. I find them also to be truly wide. That's what makes the rest of this review so disappointing. However, the build quality and materials are not what I expected from this brand. The sole material is so soft that large chunks came out of it after the very first hike, and stitching started coming out soon after. I thought it was a fluke so I got another pair (surely such a well respected brand wouldn't let this happen, right?) and had the same thing happen ... with the addition of the zipper failing right out of the gate. These might be fine for someone who hikes on well-maintained trails covered in soft leaves, casually. But for more serious hiking, off trail, or military use: avoid. I currently use my two pairs of beat-up boots around the shop, but can't trust them for any serious outdoor activity. ... show more

****UPDATE***** Merrell Stood behind there product and is Shipping me another pair. That is why I buy Merrell Products. I love these guys!!! ***** These boots fit perfectly and I love this brand but after only 2 months of use the Toe box seams are pulling away. I have had a few pairs of Merrell Hiking Boots And thought I would try a pair of these Tactical boots. They were so comfortable that I was going to buy another pair just to have in stock. I work on a 7000 acre ranch and my boots get a workout driving cattle fixing fences and guiding Elk hunts etc. I am totally surprised at the seams spiting as other hiking boots I have from Merrell have lasted years. I think this was a manufacturing problem and I hope I can get these replaced. This can happen I guess but the real test is if Merrell stands behind their product At $164.00 I could almost buy 2 pairs of a cheaper brand(Smith and Wesson) ... show more

    • Not that easy to put on

You would think a side zip boot would be easy to put on, but this is a little tough, I have to unlace the shoe usually. Why buy a side zip if that is the case. The shoe is supposed to be waterproof, which I think may be although I havent proven that. The base of the shoe seems like it should be bigger, like it needs more 'footprint' in my opinion. I wear a wide, so maybe that is part of the problem. The shoe is comfortable enough, I just would like less of a rocking on the sole. Not sure if I would buy another pair. Update on the shoe: Wore them in the snow the other day. Were very waterproof, great for wet and mud. Personally I think the shoe is good for occasional use, not an every day shoe for me in construction. ... show more

Only giving one star as I cannot give zero! If you plan to buy these boots for hiking or backpacking in rough terrain do NOT purchase from this seller or this brand of boot! We purchased these in February and my husband made 3 hiking trips in these boots and the soles were falling off in big chunks! This type of boot should be able to handle hiking for longer than they did. Do not purchase these boots from chicjewels or Merrill as they told us because it was outside the 30 day return period to return. These boots are crap!! Comfy! But crap! Find something better because for $154 they won’t last long or even get your moneys worth! Disappointed for sure! ... show more

I have had these boots for a few months now and wear them all the time. After just wearing them around the house to see if they fit, I went for two mile walk and they fit fine. As for me I didn't need any break in time with these boots. Would have given them a higher rating but they don't have a loop in the back to help with putting them on. I can't believe that a footwear maker such as Merrell didn't have this basic item on the boot. ... show more

They could have better arch support, but overall these are awesome boots. I bought these for fishing and they surpassed my expectations. They it like a good pair of sneakers but are as durable as military boots. I'm a former Paratrooper and know what good boots feel like. They are water resistant to just over the ankle. Not water proof, I stepped in mud and sank to over my ankle and stayed dry, only felt some dampness while hosing the mud off at home. They hosed off and were very clean like new. I was surprised by this, and I highly recommend them. Comfortable and great ankle support. Extremely light and good in hot and cold weather. ... show more

Boots are about three months old. The toe boxes are blown out, all the stitching came out after the material cracked. Same happened on the heel and back of the boot. Ankle support is miserable and there is no arch support without third party inserts. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed these boots but they need to do some serious re thinking. They might be half way useful for those who arent flat footed and do not over or under pronate, have a low body weight, and who only intend to wear the boots once. Great if you choose the right size based on a previous pair of Merrell shoes you have. Really light, well built pair of boots. Only thing to improve is to make a wider hole to introduce your feet. Idea of having a zip is not to ungir your shoelaces everytime you out your boots off.
