I wear this style because it is a slip on that I can leave by the door. Most of the time I am hurrying and do not want to take the time to tie laces. The Jungle Moc is designed to easily slip into and fit well enough that I do not have to worry about them coming lose while chasing a bear, gathering rattle snakes for lunch or fishing along the river in my back yard whenever I want fish for dinner. With the exception of scree and talus fields, the Moc can be worn on a sidewalk, while hiking on a steep and irregular trail surface or traversing a grassy hillside. They do not provide a great deal of ankle support but if I am going to need additional support and protection, I can put on a pair of La Sportiva boots that have a great speed lace system. As a retiree I understand that I have an obligation to support our Captains of Industry by purchasing essential items that will allow them to recoup their losses during a year or two of mismanagement. HAD A PAIR OF THOSE JUNGLE MOCS. 25 YRS AGO AND WORE THEM FOREVER THAN GAVE THEM TO GOOD WILL AND BET SOMEBODY IS STILL WEARING THEM TODAY...SO I ORDERED A PAIR OF THOSE UGG SHEEP WOOL INSERTS FOR 20 BUCKS TOOK THOSE FLIMSY ARCH SUPPORT (nothing wrong with them) OUT AND PUT THOSE UGGS IN AND VOILA !     • Ordering Merrells on Amazon can be a crap shoot these days. This order was just fine.

When Merrells were all made in just one or two places the quality was uniform even when buying from different retail vendors. Now, there seems to be a large number of Merrells assemblers/fabricators/supply chains. Combine that with multiple vendors on Amazon and things have gotten very unpredictable. There have been quality variations, size variations, squeaky shoes, mismatched uppers. Fortunately, Amazon return policies Are accommodating. Merrell has a problem though with their reputation and should straighten it out. This order was just fine, quality was as expected, delivery was as promised. ... show more

Updated review after ordering a second pair 23 months after buying first pair: ===========================================================: I ordered my second pair and have just begun wearing them. The new pair so far seems good. However I made the mistake of ordering Gunsmoke Grey instead of the color of my first pair, Dark Earth. I HATE the Gunsmoke Grey color, which is just different enough from the appearance on the web page for me to hate. I've been struggling with whether to exchange them. I don't really want to return them, because the sale is over and I'll probably have to pay full price for a different color replacement, but I just do not like this color. Otherwise, however, the new Jungle Mocs are fine. They are comfortable, and they don't have the squeaking problem that my first pair had until I fixed it (see my original review below for details). My first pair was becoming a very loose fit over time, not at all snug like they are new, but not too loose to wear. My plan when I ordered the new pair was to continue to wear the old pair as my daily at home shoe, and only wear the new pair for work. The first pair, which was Dark Earth, is discolored after nearly two years of daily wear, but not as bad as I feared they'd be after two years. But I do mostly computer work and meeting with people. If I did a different type of work, the shoes could look a lot worse by now. My new pair is Gunsmoke Grey, which I don't care for and regret ordering. I don't use them for hiking or other trail use - I prefer running shoes or hiking boots for that - so I have no opinion about how they hold up off pavement. Overall these are excellent shoes. First Updated Review: After 16 months of daily wear, I'm still happy with these shoes, though I'm a little disappointed that they seem to be stretching, making the shoes feel looser. My big concern after buying them was the squeaking in one of the shoes, but the trick I described in my original review (below) did the trick. The shoe has never again squeaked. I still recommend these shoes. Original review: ============ The shoes have been fine since I found out how to stop them from squeaking. This is a problem many Merrell owners complain about. For me, only my right shoe squeaked. The left shoe has never squeaked. The right shoe squeak was barely audible at first, but after three weeks, it was becoming loud enough that I knew I could not live with it. I was ready to return them to Amazon, but fortunately I did some research first that allowed me to solve the problem. I've now owned the shoes two months and am completely satisfied. The way I solved the problem was to place two dryer sheets (fabric softener sheet) under the insole of the squeaking shoe. I was skeptical that it would work, but the squeaking stopped immediately and five weeks later, there's still no squeaking. I've read that another solution is to sprinkle some talcum powder under the insole. I bought the traditional round-lug Moc rather than the Vibram sole. If I used the shoe for hiking, I'd have gotten the Vibram sole, but I prefer a lace-up shoe for rugged terrain. I wear these as my everyday shoe. They're perfect for that. When I'm on the trail, I use hiking boots or running shoes. I bought the Jungle Mocs to replace a pair of imitation Jungle Mocs (Hathaway Comfort Mocassins) that I wore for six years and that held up well, but were never comfortable. The Merrells are a huge improvement in comfort over the imitations. I hope they hold up as well as the imitation mocs I was wearing before. I considered docking a star for the squeaking, but it was so easily solved that I decided to give the shoes a full five stars. ... show more

    • Pretty consistent shoe, year to year... this was my fifth pair

I've been buying these mocs since they first hit the market, and they've always been one of my favorite shoes. I like the higher arches, and the fit is always consistent. My only complaint remains the same... the soles are too soft and wear out quickly. I've owned other brands that last much longer, so why can't Merrell use a better compound that will last longer? I've thrown away all my other pairs because the soles wear through, even though the uppers are still in fine shape. Seems that it wouldn't be that hard to make the soles out of a longer-lasting compound, but then I guess they wouldn't sell so many of these. Regardless, it's the best shoe in this category, so I'll continue to buy them, but only when they drop $20 (as they do from time to time) on my Wishlist. I won't pay full retail for them, but I'll pay $60+ without complaining. Great shoe, great fit, and a real classic. ... show more
