  • Pretty consistent shoe, year to year... this was my fifth pair
Size: 12 Color: Dark Earth
I've been buying these mocs since they first hit the market, and they've always been one of my favorite shoes. I like the higher arches, and the fit is always consistent. My only complaint remains the same... the soles are too soft and wear out quickly. I've owned other brands that last much longer, so why can't Merrell use a better compound that will last longer? I've thrown away all my other pairs because the soles wear through, even though the uppers are still in fine shape. Seems that it wouldn't be that hard to make the soles out of a longer-lasting compound, but then I guess they wouldn't sell so many of these. Regardless, it's the best shoe in this category, so I'll continue to buy them, but only when they drop $20 (as they do from time to time) on my Wishlist. I won't pay full retail for them, but I'll pay $60+ without complaining. Great shoe, great fit, and a real classic. ... show more

  • Great shoe -- tricky sizing
Size: 9.5 Color: Classic Taupe
Longtime fan of Merrill's, and specifically the Jungle Moc. Leather uppers and firm, cushioned soles that stand up to hours walking on concrete daily. They can serve as solid hiking shoes, yet casual and sharp enough to wear for a night at the pub. The last pair I ordered had to be returned as it ran a 1/2 size large and slipped off my heels with almost every step. The length appeared fine, but they felt "wide" even though they were the right size and not a wide version. I've had this problem before. But when the sizing is correct, just a fantastic shoe. ... show more

  • A perfectly decent slip-on shoe, but not really for me.
Size: 11 Wide Color: Gunsmoke
When it comes to buying clothes or shoes online, the one thing you always have to worry about is the fit. There's no such thing as standardized sizing and shape, so even the sizes that worked for you in the past could be a miss with another item or brand. It's hardly a problem when you buy in the stores because you can always try things on, but online you are left with dependence on returning things. So that's what happened in my case. I bought this Jungle Moc, gave it a shakedown run by wearing it for a few hours to see how it felt, and then I returned it the next day. So I will say that I don't want to let on that this is a poor quality product ; From what I could tell in the limited time I used it, I think it's actually quite good. If I thought much less of it, this would have been a one-star review. I will say that the ability to slip on and off was very convenient and quite easy. The water resistance was decidedly impressive. And even for being brand new, it wasn't quite as stiff and rigid as I'd expected out of the box -- it flexed much like an already relaxed leather would. So what didn't work? Well, sizing is a bit weird on this shoe. I have pretty wide feet and while there are a handful of models out there on the market where I can fit into a 10.5 wide, the majority of shoes sold on this planet do not fit that description. These were no exception. Most of my shoes are at least an 11 for this very reason, and some brands and types of shoes (particularly dress shoes) are so narrow that I need at least a size 12 or even 13 to get in. Based on both the design of the shoe (with its seemingly long and narrow appearance) and the comments from some other wide-footed reviewers, I decided to go with an 11 Wide. From the standpoint of width of the toe box alone, this was actually the right choice for me. It had about the right width with a little extra room that just about lines up with the amount my feet would expand after a few miles of walking. However, these shoes are long. So long that they just about equal the length of some size 12 wingtips I have. That meant a lot of room in the front. Now the worry is whether you'll end up sliding around inside the shoe and jamming your toe, but this did not appear to happen for me. The way the toe box tapers in front meant that the sides of my feet would be a blocker before my toe would be. But if this was all there was to the fit, I actually wouldn't have had much problem with the shoes, and indeed, I would probably have kept them and you'd be reading a 4-star review. The arch support and the ankle height were the two things that really made it uncomfortable for me. I have what I believe to be pretty average foot volume and average arch height. These shoes were clearly made for people with higher arches and a bigger volume foot than I. With as much arch support as it did have, I felt more like my instep was being pushed up higher than I liked rather than being "supported." If you have somewhat higher than average arches, this may well be the slip-on outdoor shoe for you. It was not for me, though. The ankle height was the other killer for me. It was exactly the right height that it dug directly into my ankle bone and just ended up placing pressure on the tendons every step I took. Pretty harmless while I'm seated, but standing, not so much. So to be totally fair -- this is actually a pretty good pair of shoes if you can get it in the right size for you. But that really is key. In my case, it wasn't that the fit was just superficially off, it was that there were dealbreakers that made them just plain uncomfortable. I just think they were not made for feet like mine. ... show more

  • Like the look
Size: 11 Color: Dark Earth
These are comfortable and look nice but have to be stretched out to slip on easily.

  • They are very durable and long lasting
Size: 13 Wide Color: Gunsmoke
I like the fact that they are a lasting well made shoe, 7 yrs and my third pair, only problem they are pricing me out of another pair, I'll have to find something else comparable.
